I'm sure plenty of you Nanoers are as Sims-crazy as I am. I always make Sims of my characters - even if I can't get them perfectly spot on, I like to think it's like a visual writing exercise (wait, maybe he *would* wear that fugly Maxis tracksuit in some circumstances...), as well as excellent procrastination.

Anyone got screenshots of their characters to share this early on? I'll probably do some of mine this evening...

That's a good idea. I never thought of doing that, because well last year I didn't even join until 5 days before nano started so I spent all my time before trying to come up with a plot. I'm going to do this later on today...

YES! I have my characters all simmed up already. I figured if I get demotivated half way through November I can build them houses (seeing as how they are not even out of the simbin yet) and use that when I run out of description ideas.

Of course, if all goes according to plan and I finish up this year I would really, really like to employ my sims to act out the story. It will be a fun break from doing legacy stories.

I don't have my screenies uploaded yet, but I can do that tonight if anyone is interested. At present I have 10 characters that will hopefully prove themselves important to the story.

I did this once for a story I was writing, but I had forgotten about it. I think I might do that again. I liked being able to create them how they were in my mind.

...Actually, this seems a bit sad to say aloud (write aloud? O_o), but my whole NaNo story actually started out as a sims story. >> It was a good sims story, too, if I do say so myself, but I managed to end up losing all my lots and sims for the story, so it died only about three sections in. I'd love to continue it as a sims story, but to be honest, I can't be arsed to rebuild and recreate all those lots and sims. And then there's also the business of hunting down all the cc again, so it'd just be a time-consuming nightmare instead of the fun project it started out as. Yuck. Even so, I still want to continue the story, even if I can't sim it as I go along. Sooo looks like NaNo will be taking up the slack. Yay NaNo! :D

Anywho, picspam time!

My two leading gentlemen, the Perrin brothers Liam and John (names subject to abrupt changing without warning, cuz I'm just like that), who, at that point in the story, are pretty much hatin' on one another. Poor guys. John's on the left, Liam the right.
Clicky

And my leading lady, Mary, in the midst of very thoroughly chewing out a rather scruffy, pre-haircut and shave Liam. (He deserved it, by the way. >> The chewing out, I mean, not the haircut and shave. Though he did need those too. <<;)
Clicky

Annnd just because I can, one of the set-lots I built. It's a big huge shop for building planes in. Looks pretty unimpressive from the outside, but holy shizzle is it full of *stuff* on the inside. XD Took like, four hours.

Yes! I got bored waiting for November and started making Sims of my characters, using the excuse that it'll get their appearances pinned down - I'm trying to put a lot more description in this year's novel than I usually do. Of course, it took me three tries, completely starting from scratch each time, to get them all related the way I want them to be, and as it is I had to settle for my MC not actually being related to most of his extended family, but oh well. I actually used a screenshot of them as the basis for my cover art on my profile, but I've got a few more besides that one:

My MCs, Devan and Louis (Devan's the one on the right, with brown hair; Louis is in the blue coat):

My not-quite-so-main MCs, Catherine and Elizabeth (they're mother and daughter, and look a lot alike; Catherine's the one on the left):

My villain, King John:

One of my secondary characters, Fara (who's currently King John's slave):

I've got a few more, too, but that's enough with the pictures for now :)

I love using sims to make my characters! I have a whole neighborhood dedicated to my story. My story is set in the civil war so I've downloaded all this custom content. If anyone else is doing historical fiction http://www.all-about-style.com/themes.html has really great period outfits.

I'm planning on doing that later. I create all my characters in Sims and try, and fail, to making them look like they do in my mind. It's really funning to put them on free will when they have their personalties some of my characters are just out there.

I haven't done this yet for my NaNo, but my co-author and I have made Sims of the main characters of the books we're writing together. Not to play, but just to have a clearer picture in our heads of what they look like.

I had my characters simmed up (in fact my NaNo evolved from a Sims story I was planning), but I lost them. It wouldn't be hard to re-create them. Yay, I have an excuse to open my game! But expect pics sometime tomorrow.

I like playing the Sims 2 a lot, but the only story I've ever thought of using it for before was the story of the Sims 2 neighbourhood I play - I keep notes of significant events in a file and try to make a coherent story of how the small town of SimHampton has developed. It's now in year four of its own time and year six in real time.

I just had them stand in front of the wall and then edited the pics in photoshop. ^_^
also, this would probably be useful for people that don't know how to use the camera:

From the Sims 2 site:

'When you find a favorite camera angle for your shot save it. You can save up to six different camera positions by using the control key and pressing numbers [4-9]. This can help you manipulate as scene as needed without losing that spectacular angle you found. You many also want to explore the motion between the different camera positions. This can help you achieve the right sense of motion for your shot.

List of useful camera controls

Tab key - enable Cameraman mode

In Cameraman mode:
(+) / (-) and z / x - these control the Field of Vision
Mouse movement - controls the pitch (the tilt of the camera)
Scroll button on the mouse - controls the level of zoom

Other useful commands
V - start/stop the video recording
Control [4-9] - save camera angles
ASDW and the arrow keys will move you forwards, backwards, and sideways
< > will allow you to rotate the camera around a center point'

I made sims of my characters in 2006, when I wrote a contemporary story. Last year I wrote a fantasy story, and it would have taken way too much time to find the necessary custom content (especially since this was not a standard fantasy story but was set in my own parallel world). I am leaning towards writing a sequel this year, so I would probably have much the same problem now. Although I have to say, the witches in Apartment Life do have an aura fairly similar to what I imagined for my magic users.

I simmed my main characters back in 2006, but they faced a horrible demise during a computer crash. Re-did them in 2007, saved all files properly, and I might have pictures of that somewhere. Still I couldn't manage to create my 2007 main character, since he was supposed to be either transvestite or transsexual, and I never got the face right to look female with the right cc despite of being male.

As for 2008... well, you just gave me an idea for what to do until november starts ^^

I've got five main characters, but only four have really been simmed out. None of them have names yet, but I have an idea which parts they'll play in my story. The basic premise is that sometime in the near future, the government has reinstated Prohibition, and the main characters - all colleagues & friends who work at a bar and restaurant - are laid off of work because of it. With jobs on the decline, they begin to draw themselves into the world of bootlegging.

NAME: ---
BACKGROUND: Former tomboy-turned-gun moll, who will eventually take control of the group; worked as a waitress before being laid off.

NAME: ---
BACKGROUND: Affiliation / job in the bootleg group isn't known yet; worked as the front bartender before being laid off.

NAME: ---
BACKGROUND: Architect & former leader of the group; worked as a waiter before being laid off.

NAME: ---
BACKGROUND: Affiliation / job in the bootleg group isn't known yet; worked as the back bartender before being laid off.

I still have an FBI agent or two, as well as the heads of the "real" bootleg groups to sim. I think this is a good start though and will certainly help :]

Hardcore sims fan here! Lol
I've made almost all of my characters as sims. I don't have pictures of all of them though. I'll put them on here when I do! I have made one of their houses too. It's quite an important house though, and the majority of the novel takes place there. I think making them as sims is an important character development excersise. (or maybe it's just good for procrastination) heheh...

I made all my characters on The Sims .. that's right, not even The Sims 2.
When I have nothing to write, I can at least justify my procrastination with that fact that it is something NaNo related...

Evelyn Norma James, age 20. Works as a barista at a Seattle Starbucks in a Barnes & Noble.
She and her twin brother get taken to an alernate world where their previously unknown triplet is asking them to help her fight a war against her people. The only way to win the war is by harnessing some sort of 'power of three', which is why she brought them to her world.
