[sticky] Overnight Write-a-thon RSVP: Fri., Nov. 27, 8:30pm-6am

Please RSVP in this thread so I know how many people to expect.

When you're three days from the end and still behind on your wordcount, things can look scary and impossible. Luckily, NaNoWriMo is ALL ABOUT doing the impossible! It's also all about lack of sleep, too much caffeine, and the company of other people just as crazy as you. In short, the spirit of Nano is pretty much summed up by a ridiculous all-night writing session!

Just like last year, I'll have little star stickers for each 1000 words you reach. See how many stickers you can collect over the course of the night on your laptop, notebook or forehead!

Location

Student Life Centre, Room 2143
University of Waterloo campus
Campus Map -- look for the SLC building, at the left of the cluster of yellow buildings, toward the top.

The SLC is next to (south of) the gym. If you see the gym, with its entrances called things like "Red North" and "Blue South", you're near the right place.

How do you know you've found the SLC? Once inside, you'll see the following on the main floor, depending on where you are: a Tim Horton's and little convenience store at one entrance, a food court visible from most of the others.

Find the stairs near the food court (east side of building, lots of big glass windows) and go up to the second floor. Turn right. Keep going until you see Room 2143, which also has big glass windows, and a Nano sign!

Minors

Minors are very welcome at this event, but due to the (awesome, totally fun and productive) overnight nature of it, official permission from your parent or guardian is required. You also need to be dropped off and picked up by your parent (by 6am at the latest). Please download and print this waiver and have your parent or guardian read and sign it. As usual, if they have any questions or concerns, please feel free to have them email me at jo (dot) merlin (at) gmail (dot) com.

What to Bring

Some sort of shareable snack (e.g. coffee w/ coffee maker, chips, hot chocolate, baked goods, candy) and a bowl if required. Please let us know what you're bringing so there's not too much overlap. (You're also welcome to bring your own personal snacks, but I do ask you bring something to share, even if it's just a kettle.)

A mug and spoon -- for your caffeinated beverage of choice! Assuming we end up in the SLC, there's also a desk downstairs where you can buy drinks and snacks at all hours.

A blanket/thick sweater/toque... whatever you need to keep you warm in case the room is cold. Last year it was.

Something cushy to sit on.

Headphones--you don't have to, but I'm putting it on here so you don't forget if you want to bring them.

The waiver, if you're a minor. And your parent or guardian (to drop you off).

<strike>I also need a volunteer who a) has a cell phone they don't mind Nano people calling, b) will be at the write-in right at 8:30 and will be staying until at least 12:00, and c) probably won't get lost themselves (or can meet me and go together). I don't have a cell phone, but some people may need help finding us, so it would be very helpful if I can have access to a cell.</strike> Heraura/Rachel is going to give me her cell number to use in case of people getting lost. I'll send it to you via Nanomail if you RSVP to this thread, so make sure to RSVP if you're coming!!

Transportation

Parking: On the map above, check off 'Parking' to see the location of the lots. I recommend parking in the M lot and then walking left on Ring Road (the one that goes all the way around the main campus/yellow buildings) until you come to the SLC. Or park across the creek in one of the P lots. These are accessible via Westmount. If you zoom in on the map, you can see that there are three spots where the paths from those parking lots cross the creek. Aim for one of the north two, then turn left and follow Ring Road until you come to the SLC on your right. There's lots of construction going on just to the south of it, so look for the big plywood walls; it's the building just past them.

Buses: The following buses have stops on campus: 7D, 7E, 8, 9, 12, 13, 29, IXpress and the Late Night Loop. On the map linked above, you can click on Grand River Transit and it will put little GRT symbols where the various stops are.
The 7D comes in from University Ave. and goes clockwise around campus (leaves via Columbia), so you could get off at the stop next to B2 on the map above.
The 7E comes in from Columbia and goes clockwise around campus (leaves via University), so you could get off at the stop next to DC (on right/east) and walk across campus to the SLC (3-min. walk).
The 8 stops at the south campus entrance (off University): the GRT symbol at University and Seagram on the map above.
The 9/13 stop, the IXpress and the Late Night Loop stop, is next to DC (right/east side of campus). Get off there and walk 3 min. across campus to SLC.
The 29 stops just inside the south campus entrance (the GRT symbol just below SCH). If you get off here, I recommend following Ring Road around to the left until you pass the construction site on the right: the SLC is the building just past the construction site.
If you take the bus, I strongly recommend checking the times and route map on the GRT website as the directions I've provided are only rough guidelines, and none of the buses run all night!
Orwell Donation #1

In the spirit of helping the Office of Letters and Light reach it's $100K donation goal for today, I counted up the moolah in Orwell the NaNoWriPig today: he contained $87.55.

That's awesome! Orwell oinked with pleasure upon hearing the news.

I topped up the amount to get us to $100 American, and made the donation. You can see us listed here on the 'NaNoWriMo is Brought to You By...' page. Just look for 'Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge Region'!

Keep on donating--I'll tally up the rest and donate it at the end of the month! In the meantime, I've left the money in Orwell. He's happier when he's full. =)
Cambridge Williams Write-in: Tues., Nov. 24, 6:30-9:30pm

Please RSVP in this thread so I know how many people to expect.

Anyone else getting nervous? I need all the write-ins I can get, to vacuum-suck those words out of me. They're not coming otherwise!

Location

Williams Coffee Pub, in Cambridge (620 Hespeler Road)

Transportation

Parking: The Williams has its own parking lot. Otherwise, there's a strip mall behind it you can park at.
Bus Routes: It would appear that the 67, the 51 and the IXpress all stop near the Williams, but again, I don't know the area at all, so anyone with extra information about buses in Cambridge, please share!

As with all our events, please buy at least a drink so you're not loitering.
Anyone else struggling?

I know it's only a couple days in, but I can't seem to write. I keep getting distracted by anything and everything. It's not that I don't have ideas, or don't want to write, but I just can't seem to get there.

Anyone else out there in a similar boat? Or have any ideas on how I could combat this?

Thanks! :)
READ ME!!! Important note about time zones and novel uploading!

I just noticed/remembered today that with daylight savings time, you have to change your time zone on the Nano website. MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS!! If you don't, it will think that you're an hour ahead of where you really are, meaning...

If you don't change your time zone settings, you won't be able to upload your novel after 11PM instead of MIDNIGHT on November 30th.

On the My Nanowrimo dropdown menu, click on Edit User Settings. The time zone feature is in there, toward the bottom.

Don't forget!
Writing Tonight

Around 8pm i'm more or less getting kicked out of my house for a few hours, so i figured I might as well see if anyone else want's to write somewhere. I'm thinking about going to a Tim Hortons. If anyone else wants to write tonight, let's set up a place to meet!

If no one replies to this, I'll most likely be writing at the Timmies at Ottawa and Strasburg, so anyone's welcome to join me. I'll probally be the only person inside with a laptop :P
Guelph write-in: Sunday Nov. 22

In case there are any Guelphites not watching the Elsewhere forum, we're going to try a write-in at Williams (Stone & Edinburgh) Sunday, November 22nd (i.e., tomorrow). I suggested 1pm, but would be willing to start a bit later if preferred....

Either way, I'll try to go a bit early and snag us a seat near a power outlet - look for last year's t-shirt, you know, the one with "NANOWRIMO" and the number 10 on the back in big letters.

RSVP appreciated!
Yeast: The Story!

Hello everyone, I volunteered to transcribe the story that we made at the half way party tonight (November 18) so that we could continue it on the forum. And I tried my best. I think I got everything.

Everything was left intact from the notebook, grammar, spelling, strikes (the last one the person ran out of space on the line and crossed it out it seems...).

So, as we continue this story... Please use the reply at the bottom of the page, so everything is left intact, and that it doesn't become more incomprehensible than it all ready is.

And maybe, just maybe, we might be able to get this story to NaNo winning length... maybe...

Also, as a personal note, I find it incredibly hard to believe that we wrote this before anybody started drinking...

Well then, add on!

-----

One day there was a yeast who woke up, to rise under his cover of wheat. All it could tell was that it was hotter then hell. Hotter in fact than a million hells. The yeast really didn't appreciate it. Why would anyone turn the heat up so much? The yeast went of to the <strike>yeast</strike> corner of the kernel, where he asked the germ what the hell he thought he was doing. "Rising to the task," he sneered.

"I'm heroic! Let me help!" Said the yeast as he put on his top-hat. But then, out of nowhere a breeze blew his top-hat away, as the yeast screamed in horror. "My precious! Come back to me!"

But then the 'top hat' had other ideas And being a Top hat for a yeast was not at the top of his list... So he took advantage of a stray breeze + took off on other adventures...

Now what the top hat didn't know was that it was the magical item keeping the yeast from infusing with the wheat. As yeast fell back in exhaustion upon his bed of wheat. Suddenly he was filled with the most peculiar feeling of extreme bloating. The wheat and it were rising!

Rising all the way to the moon where the sinister cheese Queen of the moon was waiting for the yeast + triumphantly screamed, "Now I have you! I will give yeast infections to <strike>the</strike> everyone who resists me And I will eat this wheat! Nom nom nom!" The yeast heaved and heoed and out popped a new born child who was the size of a pea.

And the child was hungry So the child began to eat the moon! But it wasn't enough, It wanted to devour the entire universe

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Steve the buffalo suddenly went rigid, and kneeled over, dead as a doornail, from a heart attack.

The wind created from the falling buffalo traveled across the ocean and to the moon, creating a giant typhoon!

The typhoon raged for days and days, and the oceans were emptied on to the land. Small one celled creatures frolicked in the ooze

This truly annoyed the yeast, who traveled to find the top hat.

"Hat", the yeast said, "unless you act now, you won't be Top much longer".

The Top hat, fearing for its Topping quivered in terror! How could it ever That was when the yeast decided it was time to give and in the middle of the story came the smiling Under Taker.

"Oh no!" They screamed, "What shall we do?"

That was when the undertaker said, "stop screaming! I have a migraine! Jeez!!"

The pidgeon on his shoulder also <strike>squak</strike> spoke: "Give me the yeast!" Then he flew

All the way to the moon. "My child," cried the yeast, "you must stop eating the moon!"

The child, only a bite from <strike>finish</strike> finishing, stopped.

----------
Meow

Our regional chat room - You should sign in with whatever username you use on the Nano site to minimize identity confusion.

Find chair, insert bottom. Go to above website.

As with all our events, please <strike>buy</strike> bring at least a drink so <strike>you're not loitering</strike> you can enjoy the beautiful harmony of sugar and writing. (Though you may wish to avoid the less-beautiful harmony of hot chocolate in your keyboard. Be careful!)
HALFWAY PARTY (!!!) RSVP: Lion Brewery Restaurant, Wed., Nov. 18, 6-8pm

Please RSVP in this thread BY NOVEMBER 16TH AT 5PM so I know how many people to expect. I'm going to let the restaurant know our numbers so they know how many servers to have.

Making it halfway to your goal (whether in word count or only in time spent) is worthy of celebration, don't you think? The Halfway WRITE-IN is on Sunday, the actual halfway day, but this is an evening of fun. Perhaps even--dare I say it?--an evening away from the computer. If you've been craving a break, this is your chance.

Which leads me to...
Rule #1 of the Halfway Party: NO WRITING ALLOWED. =) Don't bring your laptop, or we will throw things at you.

Rule #2 of the Halfway Party is to have fun. Which is why there will be more raffley goodness and group stories to write. Because who doesn't love alien penguins...or whatever it was we had last time!

Location

Lion Brewery Restaurant, in the Huether Hotel (59 King St. N., Waterloo)
map

To get to the Lion Brewery, enter the Huether Hotel from King St. When you walk in, you'll see cafe tables on the left and right (that's Cafe 1842). Straight ahead, you'll see a doorway, and stairs going down. Go down those stairs! Down there is the restaurant, and you'll want to ask for 'the writing group'. We'll probably be in an area called 'the Cavern' so you can say that too if you need more information. But I'll tell them to expect people asking about the writing group.

Please come as close to 6pm as you can, since we will be ordering food, but as long as you're there before 6:45ish, you should have time to order and eat and have time to hang out with everyone.

Please note: despite the name, this is a restaurant, not a pub or bar. See below regarding under-19s. (Spoiler: you can come!)

Transportation

Parking: There's street parking all along King St., a free parking lot on the southeast corner of Regina and Erb, or the Valumart/Town Square parking lot (accessible from King St. by the railroad tracks/Rude Native). There is also a parking lot behind the Marsland Centre (at Dupont and Albert, across from the library) that's free outside of business hours. Just check the sign.
Bus Routes: Uptown Waterloo is accessible via the IXpress, all of the 7s, the 5, and the 35.

(In)frequently Asked Questions

1. Should I have dinner first?
No! This is a dinner party. They have many food items. Though I suppose if you like you could just get an appetizer and a drink. So OK, yes, you can have dinner first if you want. =)

2. I'm under 19. This sounds like a...well, brewery. Can I come?
Absolutely yes. Please come! The Lion Brewery Restaurant is in fact a restaurant, and is all-ages. If you have parents who are concerned, have them shoot me an email (jo dot merlin at gmail dot com) and I can clarify for them. But I assure you, I triple-checked with the establishment: The Barley Works, upstairs, is 19+, but the Lion Brewery is just a restaurant. That said, if you're over 19, they do serve alcohol. Please drink responsibly at Nano events.

It seems kind of weird putting this statement right after that last, but...As with all our events, please buy at least a drink so you're not loitering. Doesn't have to be alcoholic! =D
Notes on Pep Talks

Although writing writing writing is a really good plan if you want to get through NaNoWriMo a "winner", the idea of having a writing-free half way party is a good one. Because no matter how prepared or driven you are, you must take an occasional break, for your sanity of nothing else.

I'm trying really hard to be good and not go online, blog, or check email, say, until I'm on an official writing break. Today instead of just skimming the NaNo peptalk letter in my email box, I actually read it and got a big kick out of it too.

(It's even better for sanity to find something to make you smile at at least once a day.)

Anyway, my absolute favorite line was this:

"We eat what we find and slurp coffee from anything that is sturdier than coffee "

"Sturdier than coffee" was what cracked me up.

Anyway I thought it might be good to have a place to stick favorite bits from the pep talk letters.

Tips for staying excited about Nano!

As we pass the halfway point, it can be hard to remember what it was you liked about this bloated, incomprehensible beast calling itself a novel when the month began. If you, like me, tend to pass through a period of decreased motivation or dislike of your novel, try these tips! (They're guaranteed, coming from someone who has successfully overcome the mid-month doldrums for the past four years)

1. Take a break if you haven't. Take a day off, let your anger or confusion or whatever other emotion dissipate, then come back to your novel. Just like in a fight, you need some time to cool down rather than plunging ahead blind. A little bit of distance can help you see what it is about your novel that's slowing you down. Is your MC a jerk (in a bad way)? Has your plot stagnated? Have you gone off on a tangent that doesn't have much to do with what you originally wanted to write about?

2. If the problem is a never-ending break instead (i.e., you haven't written anything in several days, like me), don't try to force interest, but do something novel-related to get it back up on its own (and don't start looking for metaphor in this sentence, it's a bad idea). Browse the forums, download a word count widget, draw your characters, map your world: anything to get the creative juices and/or novelling spirit flowing again.

Now back to my own drawing/mapping/browsing attempts at getting excited again! I feel some more plot coming on!

Does anyone else have any tips or suggestions for us?
Blogging about NaNoWriMo

Since I actually got ahead of the suggested word count I spent far too much time last night writing my blog post about being in NaNoWriMo. From reading through the official NaNoWriMo history I know I'm not the first, nor will i be the last, to do this. I thought it would be interesting to have a place to announce such things.

I did include the two photos my husband bob took with his cel phone... they are cel phone photos, so they aren't very large or clear, so I'm hoping none of the blurs in them minds. (If you are one of the blurs and you really do mind, drop me an email & tell me which blur you are and i'll edit or pull it.)

Anyway, here's the link:

Or am I just being too hopeful? XD.

I've just come back from lightly scanning the intro thread and I've noticed that a majority of the people there are in University so I'm just honestly wondering if absolutely no teenager stood up for the challenge of NaNo in Kitchener??
Cambridge Williams Write-in RSVP: Thurs., Nov. 12, 6:30-9:30

Please RSVP in this thread so I know how many people to expect.

Location

Williams Coffee Pub, in Cambridge (620 Hespeler Road)
map

Transportation

Parking: trafuse says: "The Hespeler Williams has a parking lot attached. You can totally park there. If that is full, there is a strip mall behind it, and lots of parking there."
Bus Routes: It would appear that the 67, the 51 and the IXpress all stop near the Williams, but again, I don't know the area at all, so anyone with extra information about buses in Cambridge, please share!

As with all our events, please buy at least a drink so you're not loitering.
Soundtracks

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to Nano this year, and I'm looking for just ideas on how to apply my music to my writing.

I personally listen to anything epic that gets my heart-rate going. For years (and this is going to sound weird), I have been a daydreamer, but not in the normal way, not in the sense that I would stare off into space thinking (though I do that too), but rather, actually tell my dream, role playing with myself while I'm alone. For instance, I'll be listening to some music, and suddenly the pace quickens making my heart rate go, and suddenly I'm in a mental fight scene, or chase scene, this usually inspires a story in my mind with each individual character, cast by me. I'll speak, changing my voice and accent accordingly (I draw the line at imitating female voices, can't do it, won't try). For those who are maybe wondering by now, no I am not insane or have a personality disorder, I just really get my body involved with my imagination.

My point to all that is this: How to I find a good setting to listen to my music so that my pen enacts my fantasy and not my body?

You don't necessarily have to answer my questions directly, but just, if you don't mind, share your experience, and your method of listening to your unique playlists.

thanks
Writing at Williams at University Plaza Tomorrow, Wednesday November 11

Hello guys,
I know I haven't been attending any write ins since the kickoff since I'm back and forth from Toronto for work, but I would like to write with some people tomorrow if anyone is around University Campus (or wants to head there). If anyone is interested, I'll be in at the William's there between 5-6:30pm (they have a seating limit of 45 min so I don't want to push them too hard...but I doubt they'll be like DIE for an hour and a half as long as I'm eating).

Anyhow, let me know if anyone wants to join, since I do want to meet up with people and just chill write. But if I don't hear back from anyone tomorrow I probably will not go there. Unfortunately I have a crazy hectic schedule so if no one's going to be there, I'll likely take the time to finish off work at home or something.

So I hope to hear from you guys! :)

I'll be writing at WLG tomorrow!

I'll be there from about 3 to ... 6, maybe? Depends on how productive I get. I may stay longer. If anyone wants to stop by and join in, feel freeeee! :D
