Every October, I sign up on the first, break out my copy of "No Plot? No Problem!", spend most of my online time on the website, and scribble down ideas in a notebook. Today during first period, my friend looked over at me and saw the Nano homepage. Normally, people say, "National Novel Writing Month? What's that?"
Not my friend. She said, "Oh, is it that time of year again?"
For the veterans, what's the reaction from your family and friends when they find out that it's 'that time of year again'? Do they even remember from last November?
For the newbies, have you told anyone about Nano yet? What did they say?

Told my Comp teach...she nearly fainted. Couldn't believe I'd actually want to write that much for fun. Go figure. LOL! But she thought it was really cool though and said she'd even read it if I wanted. Huh...not sure about the reading part, but it was nice of her to mention it.

I told one of my guy friends, and his reply was, "You write too much." Nothing of, what's NaNoWriMo? Why would you do it? Are you insane, nothing like that, he just simply rolled his eyes and told me, "You write too much."

My first year I didn't tell anyone, and didn't really participate much.. I failed.
Same as the second year.
Third year I got involved. Told everyone. Family, friends, friends of family, family of friends.
The next year they were like "Oh, so you're doing it again?"
This year they gave the same reaction.
YES I'M DOING IT AGAIN! AND I'LL DO IT AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

I was telling my mom that I convinced a professor to do Nanowrimo and she said, "Oh my, does the time fly. How's being an ML going for you this year..." Then she wouldn't shut up about it. lol. I was really suprised by her reaction. But hey, I didn't tell her my first year that I did Nanowrimo.
I told her when I was away from her for my second year and she just said, "You really should worry about your homework." But now she just goes insane...I am going to try next to convince her to do it.
But also I did finally convince my best friend to join me this year. After four years of trying she finally fell apart and ran out of lies, lol.

My mom's response, "You're doing Nano again? I guess I shouldn't ask you to do your chores then, should I?"
Yeah, she's kind of awesome. Essentially I get a dispensation the entire month. The only thing I still have to do is homework.

Lucky. My parents wouldn't care if I was writing a novel or trying to save the world from alien invaders... they'd still make me clean the house, cook dinner, etc.

My mom did NaNo last year, so I'm trying to convince her to do it again.
My friends and family (except the fellow NaNoers) think I'm insane, but are very supportive of my NaNoing.

My mum knows I did it last year and just nodded along to my rambling... and she pretty much did the same this year, except I didn't have to explain what it was. She's used ot me constantly writing =D

Everyone pretty much just knows that I'm going to be writing obsessively in November, but I write obsessively year-round, so it's not that much of a change to the rest of the world. The only change that I notice even is that in November I stick to one novel, and December-October I'm writing 15 novels at a time. (No, I'm not exaggerating.)

When I mentioned it was time for Nano again, my mom said, "Oh, yes, that is in November." My stepfather said, "What's Nano?" LOL (My Mom also bought me a Nano t-shirt, and I can't wait for it to get here."

I'm a bit odd because I've done script frenzy twice and nano twice this november, but I've also been doing several things for year of doing big fun scary challenges, and during august I volutarily decided to write 31 short stories in 31 days for charity. So I'm not sure my family could find the pattern in it all even if I have told them about it over and over agin for the last three or four year (I was an inthusiast before I was a participant, I always seemed to remember during the last week of november).

My wife's reaction is "Oh, no! Not again. Don't forget you still have work to do." But we survive, it goes well, and she reads it when I'm done.

It's only NaNo 3 for me and I've managed to convince a friend who remembered it from last year to try it. My other friend just about had a breakdown when I mentioned that it was close to November because he remembered what I was like last year. And everyone in my family knows about it (my mom and my sister do it as well), but I think they're mostly going to try to ignore it this year.

This will be my first Nano ever, so I'm looking forward to it. I printed off one of those flyers they have here on the site and taped it to the bulletin board outside my bedroom (I live in a dormitory) and I think I'm going to bug my fellow English majors and my professors until they cave. One girl I know has already done it like six times, so maybe she can help me goad them into it.
The last week of Nano I'll be back at home for Thanksgiving break, so that should be interesting :)

My parents generally reply with, "You still have to go to school and do your homework, you know."
My clever ploys for more writing time no longer work on them, obviously.

I found out about it last year and when I told my friends, they mostly shook their heads and dismissed the notion as crazy. This year will be my first year and I just sent out an email to my friends asking if they want to join, and asking for accountability. I haven't heard from any of the yet. My family has reacted differently. My mom will most likely be joining me this year, even if she doesn't sign up officially. And my dad has begun writing a novel but he doesn't want to try to finish it in a month.

This is only my second year of NaNo. I haven't told anybody but my best-friend and boyfriend that I am doing it. I know my parents won't have much interest in it, so I don't bother telling them. I didn't last year, either.
My boyfriend made me promise he would get to see me at least a little next month. I told him I would, so I really hope that I can keep that promise. I know how much it means to him to spend time together.

I was on the site on my lap top while simultaneously watching TV and my mum looked ove rmy shoulder and said "Oh are you going to do that again?" ^_^ The second year that I tried and the first year that I won I tried to get motivated by saying that if I wrote 50k she would quit smoking...she agreed and while I kept my end of the bargain she didn't.
But as to a sure sign that you've done NANO too many times... well Instead of doing ACTUAL school work in November you are either trolling the forums or writing out backstories or constantly obsessing about characters. Also, around June-July you have a random story idea and go 'hey that would make a great plot for Nano' And knowing that you're going to HAVE to write essays in November you swear to yourself that you're going to get as much research and writing done in OCTOBER so that as much time as possible in November can be dedicated to writing.
Both are happening to me right now. I have two projects due next week and neither are anywhere close to being done. *sigh* Sometimes I hate university, I can't wait till I can just write during my free time in Novemeber and not have to worry 'bout school... ^_^
