I'm right on the bloody border of SD county and OC county. So anything North of Del Mar is rather...North. Very far away.

Anyone else in my boat?

I'd love to host or begin a write-in -- granted a late beginning one -- in either Dana Point/ Laguna Niguel (Peet's) on (Mondays or Tuesdays) or San Clemente (Starbucks, I suppose).

Here are the five dares that I heard on the podcast:

Antagonist has a cute little brain eating zombie kitten as a pet
Character who can communicate with the dead via text messages
Flash back includes a mysterious phone call, stick of butter, and bearded lady
Alphabet soup to send message
Main character writes a novel about you in a novel that you are writing about them

I have three of the five already completed. I will likely not have an antagonist clearly defined until week three and I am staying away from flashbacks completely do to my over dependence on them in 2007, if you know what I mean (and I know that you do).

UCI Meetup

Hey guys! I saw in the intro thread that there were a handful of UCI kids and that we were all interested in meeting each other. I know we have the write-ins at Peet's in UTC (which is pretty much as close as you can get without actually being on campus, and I'll definitely be there!), but I think it would be fun to have at least one for students on campus as well so we could get to know each other better. Maybe it could take the place of one of the farther write-ins for those of us who are transportationally challenged while at school, haha. The Starbucks is always crowded, but it's open until midnight and it empties a lot later on. CyberA Café in the arts area is an option, too.

Any ideas? Convenient times? Place suggestions?

Hey everyone! Figured we might as well get a welcome thread kickstarted.

So! I'm RedwllWrrior, Red for short. Or you can just call me Elijah/Ishmael/Isaac/Isaiah/Elisha/Elishaba/Jacob/Israel/insert other Bible name that begins with I or E here/Icarus...I've actually been called all of those at one point or another [my real name is Elijah, in case you were wondering, so preferably Elijah].

This is my third year doing NaNo, and I fully intend for it to be my third year of completing it, as well. Granted, I haven't touched either of my previous novels since I hit 50k, and that's something I definitely need to rectify in the near future, but in the meantime, I have this year's novel idea percolating along nicely. I'm attending Vanguard University - second year - as a double history/english major. After my four years, I plan on getting a masters in library science and becoming a librarian. Had a lot of fun last year going to write-ins and such, and it'll be fun to hopefully reconnect again this year.

So yeah. Enough of my babbling. What about you all?

Intellivenice Stampede

Pixie's Tea House

Setting: A Victorian style parlor. Space is equipt with comfy chairs, fancy china, and all the tea you can imagine. There is also coffee for those of you who prefer that.

Purpose: Come, relax, chat, and have tea. This is a place for everyone to mingle, ask questions, enjoy themselves, etc...even if you can't make it to one of the weekly write-ins. We can even schedule write-ins in here, for word wars, similar to the word war forum elsewhere, except that chat would also be allowed, etc.

Anyways...how is NaNo going for all of you?

My experience so far

I have a confession. The novel I was working on finally petered out. I'm not saying the idea isn't worth pursuing at some point, but it just wasn't flowing. I struggled with it for the first few days, but my word count was falling behind so much I didn't feel like I could continue with that particular storyline. So I changed to a different idea and started my word count over.

I'm currently writing out stories that I made up for my daughter. It feels a little like cheating because they are stories that I have told over and over at bedtime or while driving her to school, so it seems like I am more in the process of getting them down on paper than actually "writing" per se. I am fleshing them out a lot more (probably much more than is even good for stories told to a six-year-old) and I am being forced to figure out previously unexplored aspects of the stories, the characters and the world they inhabit. But now, instead of an internal editor to shut up, I've got this internal NaNoWriMo judge telling me that I am cheating. I have always meant to write these stories down. But it does feel like I am just taking dictation on stories that have already been "written" in my own mind. Shut up, internal NaNo judge. Just...shut the hell up!

I'm telling you all this not so much because I'm looking for absolution or affirmation. I mean, I won't object if you have any comment or viewpoint to offer, of course, but I am okay with the direction I am taking this year. I think I've gotten to the point in my life where my goal for writing is no longer the juvenile fantasy of being a famous author, but more just to write anything (as opposed to my usual nothing but excuses) and share my stories however I can. That cavalier attitude goes for NaNo as well. However NaNo inspires me to write, I can consider it a "win" if I'm not giving up.

Anyway, I am telling you this simply in an effort to share my experience so far, and to open up any discussion for those who may be struggling with similar or other issues. The word-count displayed on my profile is correct. I managed to write enough in the last day and a half so that I'm only about a day behind. So it would seem that my decision was a good one. And perhaps I can use this opportunity to tie all these disjointed stories together somehow.

Plots?

So who has a plot? Who has a 10-page outline? And who's planning on coming into this year with nothing but a title?

I have something resembling what might become a plot at some point. If I use it, my novel will revolve around a small group of soldiers trying to find their way home at the end of a war. Their side may or may not have lost. And I'm trying to decide if I want to do it from the viewpoint of one of the soldier's journals, or something else.

My other idea is going to be some sort of post-apocalyptic, steampunk novel. I actually have a fairly good idea about the world and setting and all that, but I have no idea what would happen or who the characters would be or what. I've considered meshing the two together, but for what I have planned, that doesn't quite work.

One of those two ideas will, hopefully, be what I'm writing about this year.

Hello all! This is your ML speaking. Or typing. Whatever. My name is Rosie, or Skatepixie, or Pixie, or Skate, or Evil Overlord, or whatever else you would like to call me. I'm pretty easy going about that. Just don't call me late for the write-in.

Speaking of write-ins, I want to make this as amazing a NaNo as possible. People are already organizing a write-in in Mission Viejo, which is fantastic. Thanks for getting the ball rolling on that one. :-) I'd love to have other events as well, of course. Last year, we had several write-ins each week. Now, because I want this to be the best it can be for all of you, it would be excellent if I could have feed back from you all. I'm hoping to have a Costa Mesa write-in at Brandee's cafe on Harbor and Wilson (it's currently under remodel, but the new owners are geat people). I'd also love to have write-ins in Irvine and San Juan Capistrano. Days and times as well as location are pending, based on your suggestions. Let me know what works for you so that I can figure something out that will work for the group at large.

Kick off, TGIO, halfway party, etc are pending as well, though I am of course open to suggestions.

I'm looking forward to hearing from all of you. :-)
