I know there are a lot of people that like to get started right at midnight on the 1st. I'm thinking I may take a nap that day so I can do it this year, since the 1st is a Saturday so I don't have to get up the next morning. I was wondering if anyone was interested in having a little get-together somewhere that night. Writing is somehow more exciting when I'm not the only one doing it. So I imagine it'll take a little of the procrastination out of Day 1. I think I always sort of stare at the computer for about an hour before I can get things started.

I don't have any specific place in mind, but then, there aren't a lot of places that are open that late. So, maybe IHOP, Denny's, Steak and Shake, something like that. There's also Taco Bell, but that seems like a strange place for it.

I love this idea - if I can convince my spouse to watch the baby, I am totally there (wherever "there" is - all of those places sound good.) Would it be better to have a place with free wireless, or better not to have access to that great enabler of procrastination?

I wish I could, but at midnight, I'm exhausted because of the kiddo and school.
That, and my husband is pretty much guaranteed to work on Saturdays :(

Well, my write-away-from-home device in an Alphasmart, so I hadn't actually thought of the internet issue. I think we're probably better off without it though. I know it's a huge distraction at home and work.

I think that's a great idea. Sounds fun.

Right now, I'm thinking IHOP, but if we're going to have more than just a couple people, I should call and see if they're okay with us bringing in a big group (as if midnight at IHOP is rush hour). Mostly, I just like IHOP and Phoenix (where my best friend and word war buddy lives) always has their midnight write-in at an IHOP. So for some reason that makes me want to do it at IHOP. I'm flexible though.

Great idea. I'll be cheering you on from my comfy bed, lol. But don't get between me and the keyboard after 7 am!

So it sounds like we are planning on a write-in at the Topeka IHOP on Wanamaker for the midnight between October 31/November 1-- does that work for people?

Okay. So I talked to the manager at IHOP and here's the skinny. He said they don't do reservations, no exceptions, so if we got there and they were full, that's just too bad. He also said, he could only have a group there for a max of two hours. Since I was planning on being there around 11 and staying until maybe 2, I figured 2 hours was a minimum. So at this point, there's no midnight write-in. I did consider talking to Steak & Shake and Denny's, but work has been crazy hectic lately, so I'm not going to get it done. The other idea that I had was talking to Barnes & Noble to see if they'd be interested in hosting an after-hours event. But again, crazy work stuff and it's the last week of October already, so it almost feels too late to get something going.

If any of you know someone somewhere and can get us space, I will love you forever. Maybe I'll even name a character in my novel after you. But unless someone else can pop in as a small superhero, I don't think we're going to have this.

Just a suggestion, my cp's and I have IM and do a group chat thing. We set aside a specific time and meet, we do a roll call, well kind of, there's only four of us. We do a ready, set, go thing and meet back in an hour where we report our word count. We could do something like this if you all wanted.

I think an online midnight write-in is a great idea to get us started. Can someone who is good at IM stuff organize it? (Or can people just post in this thread if they are participating?)

Laura, I'm here, even if I am a bit late. I'm going to try and write for an hour. I'll check back in when I'm finished.
