NaNoWriMo's Modern Fantasy Roleplay

Welcome to the roleplay! This is a roleplay set only two years into the future and is open to nearly any kind of character. What would your NaNo novel's characters do if they found themselves in the middle of a supernatural war? Or perhaps you'd rather roleplay characters that you don't intend on including in your novel this year, and that's fine too. Please be sure to read everything below before posting =]

Setting
The roleplay is set in New York during the night of a full moon. It's Winter of the year 2010. There is no electricity, but battery powered lamps and candles are used for light. Motorbikes, cars, etc can be used for transport, but the city is very low on oil and most creatures prefer to move stealthily on foot instead. Very few humans remain alive - the city is quarantined and has been taken over by supernatural creatures. It's 11 months since the supernatural appeared, and the main war is over. Buildings are falling down as a result. Only the survivors remain on the streets.
Plot
Survival of the fittest. The city is low on food, oil, drugs, clean water, guns, etc, so fighting over them is common. No one can't leave the quarantine zone. Occasionally, the US army will fly over and bomb areas of the city, but they still have hope that the creatures will kill each other off, and that they won't have to destroy all of New York.

I've never been to New York, and I don't plan on using a map as reference. Just imagine a huge city - you can make the places, shops and streets up as you go.

(Please try and avoid taking advantage of plot holes. I've kept the plot simple so that there isn't much to read. No matter what race your character is, please don't teleport him or her out of the city to find food or whatever. It sort of defeats the purpose.)

Characters
As said before, your character can be practically anything that you want it to be, so long as it isn't all powerful or completely unrealistic. Characters could be, but are not limited too, humans, vampires, werewolves, half-human-half-animals, shape shifters, demons, fairies, etc.

If your character has magical powers, you must explain the powers, their limits and thei weaknesses in the discusison thread for approval.

If you're unsure about your character, feel free to drop me NaNoMail with any questions.

To join the roleplay

To join all you need to do is read the rules (below) and then head over to this thread and post your character sheet. Once you've done that, you're free to start posting =]

Rules

  • no Godmoding! - This means that your character can not control other characters without the other players permission. He or she is not allowed to be all powerful, and must have weaknesses. Ultimately, your character is not a god and has no control over others actions. You must give other roleplayers the chance to dodge all attacks.
  • Use some form of OoC chat when talking out of character. Common ways to do this is to use ((double brackets)) and/or by putting OOC in front of text.
  • Don't kill other characters without their roleplayers permission.
  • No more than three characters per time per person. If one dies (with your permission) you may include another.
  • Characters can not come back to life.
  • No sex scenes.
  • language and descriptive violence should be kept to a minimum.

If you have any questions, or want to discuss anything, please post in the discussion thread: Modern Fantasy RP Discussion Thread

Art wriggled his toes, which hung bare beneath the wooden school desk. He was on sentry in one of the few classrooms that still had all of it's windows, although he wouldn't have minded a little bit of a breeze. He knew it was crucial, but he didn't much like being holed up inside all the time. He wanted to fly.

He looked down at his old fashioned watch, and read 10:58. It was time for Nero to take over. With a yawn, he slipped down from the desk, shivering slightly as his feet touched the cold wooden floor, and stretched out his massive 12 foot wingspan. He'd recently taken a bullet wound to a muscle of his left wing, and while it had healed completely on the outside, it still ached when he moved it. He frowned, and bent to pick up a stray silver feather when someone came in through the door behind him.

Startled, he spun around, instinctively drawing the handgun that he and Nero shared from it's holster. The figure stopped in the doorway.

"Easy, tiger. It's only me," grunted Nero as he closed the door behind him. "I heard something outside."

((OoC: If anyone wants, they can be allied to Nero and Art and be staying in the school as well. It wouldn't be much fun if everyone chose to be their friends thouhg. Likewise, your characters could also be what's causing the disturbance outside. If neither of those tickle your fancy, you can have your characters anywhere in the city, doing whatever they wish =]))

Matvey leaned against the side of the building, an abandoned school, arms crossed, with a sour look on his face. He tapped his foot impatiently, waiting.

"Where in this mess is he, anyway?" he muttered to himself, annoyed. The soft pattering of footsteps alerted him of someones approach, and he tensed, reaching down to the shotgun at his feet. But it was only Gosha. Matvey relaxed, but lifted the gun up and cradled it in his arms.

"Where were you?" he asked, annoyed.

"Hunting," Gosha replied, licking his lips and looking around nervously. The once cheery vampire had quickly turned into a nervous wreck over the past few months.

"You managed to find someone?" Matvey said, surprised.

"Yeah. Sorry I couldn't save any for you," Gosha said apologetically.

Art blinked. Outside? He hadn't heard anything, but trusting Nero, who was older and had by far the more experience, he remained still and silent, listening...

And, sure enough, he could hear the faint conversation. It was too far away to make out the words, but there was definitely somone there. Turning to Nero, he asked, "how many?"

"Two," said Nero after a pause. He reached out and took the gun from Art, and added with a shrug, "could be more. Too far away." He adjusted his holster and checked the ammunition. "Lets go."

Go? Art was about to question, but decided that there was little point. If Nero wanted to go and check out the situation, or even get into a fight, the likelihood of Art being able to change his mind was minimal.

He followed Nero quickly out of the door and up a flight of stairs. When they reached the second floor, they moved towards some windows - the glass was long since smashed. A couple of figures stood visible below. Art bit his lip.

"Why are we up here?" he asked.

"Advantage," muttered Nero, aiming his gun through the window pane. He narrowed his eyes slightly, and fired. At the same time, Art jumped, knocking Nero's arm away. The bullet hit and smashed a window a few meters away from one of people below.

"Finally! You DID hear that, didn't you?" Eden asked, glancing sideways to her traveling companion.

Karsh rolled his eyes. "No, I didn't. The gunshot was far too quiet in this deathly silent city." His voice was thick with sarcasm, but Eden didn't pay any attention to it.

"Gunshots mean people and people mean humans and humans mean safety! C'mon we've GOTTA find them!" Eden took off at a jaunty gallop. She still hadn't grasped the concept that guns did NOT just belong to humans anymore.

"Eden for the love of..." Karsh sighed angrily and sped up his lumbering pace. "Stop running! Do you even realize..." He was about to lecture her when Eden slipped on a patch of loose gravel, sending a shockingly loud echo down the black alleyway they were in. Karsh, on a moment's notice, surged forward and caught her before she fell to the ground. He slammed his hand over her about-to-complain mouth and listened as carefully as his human ears would allow; he couldn't gauge exactly how far away that shot had come from and in this city, nine times out of ten, it wasn't friendly.

For the love of cheesecake, it was cold. What had ever happened to all those alternative energy sources the government had been so big on, like solar and wind...? And why didn't they exist in this godforsaken city? Sira rubbed her hands together and blew on them. Night wasn't exactly the best time to be trying to catch a nap, but it was a lot safer than trying to walk around outside with all the fangs and dogs and God knew what else was creeping around. She curled up into a tighter ball, her guns jabbing her at uncomfortable angles. Lovely of the military she had not-so-proudly served to at least leave her her guns when they decided she 'might' be 'contaiminated' so it was safer to just leave her to fend for herself. The worst part was trying to conserve her rounds. There weren't too many gun shops that she could find, even fewer that hadn't already been hit.

What was that, talking outside? Wouldn't be humans, she knew that. No human was that stupid, but maybe they were desperate enough to die. It was hard to make out, muffled by the glass of the abandoned coffee shop (everything was abandoned) she was huddled in, but it sounded casual. No sane human would be speaking that casually. She just hoped it was anything but fangs or dogs. They'd sniff her out in a minute. Still, in here was better than out there. She lifted her head just slightly, but the window was too grimy to see anything but shadows.

If only grime was bullet proof.

A shot rang out from what sounded like across the street. The bullet broke through the window and went right for her leg. "Son of a-!" Sira cut herself off by digging her teeth into the leather of her flight jacket. Just let the creepies fight among themselves and maybe they'd leave her alone. She wasn't risking her life if the only things out there were freaks!

A gunshot rang out in the silence, and a bullet whizzed a few feet from Matvey's ear. A window shattered behind them, and shards of glass came flying out. A piece of broken glass cut into Gosha's shoulder, and he bit his lip to keep from crying out in pain. Matvey cursed, and dragged Gosha around the other side of the building. Working quickly, Matvey took off his shirt and yanked the glass out of Gosha's shoulder, pressing his shirt against the wound. The cut made by the glass was small, but Matvey and Gosha had learned the hard way that one of the many setback of being a vampire was that blood would not clot.

"You're lucky you fed today," Matvey muttered. "You'd be dead otherwise."

"You're lucky that bullet missed you," Gosha replied, annoyed. "Who was that, anyway?"

"Don't be so loud," Matvey whispered. "They might still be here." Matvey sniffed the air, and blinked. "Do you smell that?"

"What?" Gosha said, voice low.

"Blood," Matvey said. He pointed to the broken window. "Over there."

Making the 'be quiet and stay here' signal to Eden, Karsh had heard low mumbling and whispers just ahead of them at the end of the alley. He pushed Eden aside and started making his way up towards the exit. He didn't get four steps before Eden bounced past him, grinning with her inhumanly white choppers gleaming in the low lighting. He didn't have a chance to stop her.

At least she'll die quickly... I'm sure any surviving humans have found a way to kill her kind, Karsh thought, stopping himself from moving and watching her carefully. His gun had long been devoid of any ammunition, so he'd have to make his best fight with his military-trained martial arts.

When Eden reached the opening of the alley, she just continued to skip forward out onto the street. She looked to her left side to an abandoned coffee shop. She identified the newly broken glass sitting on the ground and judged that was where the bullet had blasted through. Without even a glance at where the bullet might had come from or what might be around her, Eden took up her bouncy gait towards the coffee shop door.

My characters:
Josephine/Josie Clark, Female, Human, age 15. Tries hard to be nice, but has kind of a short fuse. Shy, modest unless with people she knows well or dislikes. Friend of Annika, acquaintance of Brennan.
Annika/Anni Byrne, Female, Animusim, age 508. Personality-less, usually, but sometimes has a flash of feeling - meek, quiet, very polite. Irish accent. Friend of Josie and Brennan.
Brennan/Brenn Ekstrom, Male, Animusim, age 130. Personality-less, but being younger, has more frequent flashes of an irritable, kind of rude boy. Friend of Annika, acquaintance of Josie.

Note: All characters have nicknames, but only Josie goes by hers. Annika and Brennan only have nicknames that close relations use.

Note: Animusim are a species I created. They are basically humans made immortal by their souls being taken from their bodies. They have the ability to take other souls as well, but usually don't. Having no souls, they have no personalities, and are therefore usually blank and don't react to much, unless they assume a personality to make themselves seem more welcoming or an occasional streak of what they used to be like shows. If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to NaNoMail me.

Note: My Animusim are likely to not be against the human race, or for it - more like not really caring.

((OoC - I was hoping people would post their character sheets in the discussion thread, to keep this forum free of non-roleplaying. But, I suppose it can't be helped.

Quote:

Name: Arthur Wright
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Race: Half cast (Gray Winged) Angel
Eye color: Mismatched - one blue, on green.
Hair color/style: sun kissed brown, loose curls.
Build: Thin, just below average height, very pale skin.
Personality: Quiet, polite and shy. Raised by a wealthy human family, mostly in solitude, he doesn't really know how to make friends or act around other people.

Quote:

Name: Nero
Gender: Male
Age: Appears 18 (Is really in his late 20s)
Race: Black Winged Angel
Eye color: Green
Hair color/style: Untidily cut, black, reached to his jaw.
Build: Tall and toned, lightly tanned skin.
Personality: Raised as a Prince, but disowned by his family, Nero has grown to be arrogant and untrusting. He keeps to himself most of the time, and usually won't consult others before making a decision.

Quote:
Their relationship

Nero and Art are both secretly lonely, and from that alone they built their relationship. Because they only have each other, they both desire nothing more than to protect their friendship. Slowly falling in love with Art, Nero would do anything to keep Art out of harms way, even if that meant giving up his life. Touched by Art's gentleness and innocence, his desire for revenge on the people who outcast him is begging to abate.

The shrivelled piece of meat shook in Tala’s trembling hand. “I can’t eat,” she said, dumping the food back onto the old license plate she had been using as a plate. She bit her lip, glancing nervously around her as the fire lit up her pale face.

Doran leaned back against the cold exterior of a beat up stretch limo. Long unused, and probably unusable anyway by this point, the car served only as a place of comfort. A home. “You haven’t eaten all-”

“I know,” Tala snapped. “I just can’t. Let’s not argue about it.”

Doran wasn’t surprised at Tala’s lack of appetite. He himself didn’t feel like eating, but a voice in his head reminded him that he should take what he gets, when he gets it. Still, with the full moon in the sky, there was no way either of them could set foot outside the old, run down garage. There was no telling what they could do.

The sound of a gunshot nearby caused both teens to jump.

“What was that?” Tala whispered in a frightened tone.

“Sounds like someone’s not happy,” was Doran’s response. “Let’s hope they don’t find us here.” He carefully placed a piece of meat in his mouth and began to chew with some difficulty.

Chun lounged against a wall just inside the mouth of an alley. He struck a match on the heel of his boot and lit up a cigarette. Blast this place. Blast getting stuck here. Blast everything. With a flick of one finger he silently blew up a near-by trashcan, sending the pieces bouncing in eerie silence off the walls.
Chun Tethar was bored, and someone was going to pay.

((just fyi, i got his last name wrong earlier, he is a Tethar.))

"Idiot!" Nero shouted angrily, shoving Art away. "What the hell did you do that for? Never mind, we don't have time. We need a plan." Grabbing Art's wrist, he hauled him to his feet and began to run until they reached a blind spot behind a whiteboard. Nero had no idea whether or not the intruders on the school grounds had any guns, but he wasn't going to stay in range to find out.

"You can't do that!" said Art, upset, his breathing heavy from fear as he collapsed against the wall. "You can't just attack everyone you see. What if they're good people?"

"You should know by now that we can't trust anyone," said Nero, peeping through the corner of a window to try and see what the people below were doing. It looked like one had taken a cut from the shattered window. "Eat or be eaten. Now shut up." He loaded some more ammunition into the gun.

((All right, let's get started, then. First thing I'm writing with these guys. Be good...))

"You all right?"

"Go to hell." With a grunt, Brennan picked herself up off the ground, running a few splayed fingers through his dark hair before turning his gaze to the two girls waiting by the door. "Get in and close it, please," he added. His voice was monotone once more. Josie sighed and followed Brennan into the abandoned cafe, Annika trailing behind. His little spitfire flashes were always gone as quickly as they came.

Hearing the comforting sound of the door clicking shut behind her, Josie shuffled over to the wall, feeling for the light switch. Her Animusim companions hardly seemed to notice the dark. They fell into perfectly synchronized steps, evaluating the place with carefully controlled expressions pasted on their faces. Trying to refrain from feeling irritation, Josie pretended she was one of them, trying to push all of her emotions away.

Brennan walked over to an opposite wall and flipped a switch. Light flooded into the room, and Josie failed.

Annika turned around to look at her, her green eyes meeting hers. They looked almost alive in the bright light. "You think anyone followed us?" she inquired, to who Josie wasn't positive.

"I wouldn't think so," she said uncertainly. "I mean, sure, I had the occasional vampire or other creep who knew where I lived, but it wasn't like they were stalking me or anything." She looked at the two, and said, "Well, not like they ever came back after they saw you at my place, anyway."

"Why, are we creepy?" Brennan put in.

Josie stared at him plaintively. "You're asking me that while you're doing that bug-eyed thing again?" She had to giggle as both Annika and Brennan's expressions morphed into more casual, peaceful ones.

((Ew. My RP-ing is really rusty.))

((hmmm, none of us are interacting with one another. let's try this....))

Chun's hand shot out and he grabbed Eden's arm as she ran past. He dragged her into the alley with him.
"You don't want to go in there." He breathed out a puff of smoke in her face. "Trust me."

"There's no time," Gosha said, poking Matvey to turn his attention back to him. "Our attackers could be here any minute. How are we for ammo?" Matvey stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out a handful of shells, keeping one hand pressed on Gosha's wound. "Tie your shirt around me so your hands are free," Gosha suggested, and Matvey was happy to oblige. Only when he looked up from that did he notice what was wrong with this scene. He swore.

"I forgot the gun," he said, annoyed at himself. Gosha sighed.

"Well, we'll just have to get it, won't we?" he said, pointing to where it was lying on the ground. "We don't have much time left." Gosha suddenly smiled at the oddity of the scene. Normally, it was Matvey who was the level-headed one. Still he couldn't blame him - Matvey hadn't fed in two weeks, and the longer a vampire goes without blood, the more irritable he is. At least, that was the way it was with Matvey.

"I'll go first," Gosha said, standing, wincing at the pain in his shoulder. "I'll run inside the building. That's where they are, I think. You pick up the gun and cover me." Before Matvey could protest, Gosha had broken into a run, dashing towards the school doors, which were in a bad state of disrepair.

((The_Irish - Morgra and my characters are interacting, to a degree. They're currently fighting at a high school or some kind of university or collage. )

Bang! Nero shot again, and before Art could protest, Nero grabbed him and hauled him back out into the open. They ran past the windows, keeping low, until they reached the other side of the room.

"Best to keep moving," Nero grunted.

"But if we just talked to them..." Art protested.

"Be quiet." Nero waited a few second before taking a quick look out the window, to see if he his attack had hit.

"We should split up," Annika pointed out. "Look for food and stuff."

Brennan nodded his consent. "I'll take the upstairs," he told the girls with a point in the general direction of a staircase that looked to be 11 years old as opposed to 11 months. Josie looked at the rotted wood and didn't object.

"Basement," she chirped, pointing to a square of trap door in the wooden flooring. She shot a gloating look at Annika, who shrugged.

"It's not like I'm letting you go down there alone," she said to Josie, who was almost positive Annika was actually glaring at her. "Vampires might hang out in cellars. I've never been friends with a vampire, and I don't intend to make one any time soon."

"Basement," Josie snorted. "You never make friends with anyone."

"Whatever. I was talking about you getting turned."

"Oh." Shrugging, Josie pulled open the door in the ground. "Well, bite me." She grinned widely at Annika and Brennan before dangling her legs over the edge of the opening and jumping.

"That's not funny!"

((Hm, if someone wants, they can be in the basement. If not, I'll move Anni and Josie out of there and get them involved with someone else.))

Sira winced against the pain, blood gushing down her thigh. Someone had really screwy aim and she was going to kill that person if they didn't get themself killed first. She scooted over to a table and pulled the old ragged cloth covering it from it, accidentally knocking a couple cups and containers of napkins and sweeteners to the floor. Well, if they were fangs or dogs, they would have already come in here and eaten her, wouldn't they? Besides, maybe the noise would scare them away. She took the cloth and ripped it in half, rolling one half up to tie around her wound. She couldn't get the bullet out, but maybe she could live with a bullet in her leg as long as she stopped bleeding.

There were more voices outside. She couldn't just stay here anymore- things would smell the fresh blood. And there was no back entrance. This just plain sucked. Pulling herself to her feet, she walked -with as little limp as she could stand- to the grime covered door and pushed it open. She saw at least two figures. She decided one of them shot her.

Eyes narrowing, she pulled out the pistol she kept in her shoulder holster under her jacket and aimed, cocking the gun. Sira pulled the trigger at one of the figures, but missed and hit the building behind him. She cursed under her breath- she had few rounds and she needed to make each one count. She thought she'd had him dead center, what happened? Maybe she could intimidate them, make them think they were out numbered.

"You got no business here!" she shouted. "You're surrounded! Leave now and we'll let you live! Sound good?" She made herself sound sarcastic about it. If there was one thing she could do, it was bluff to save her butt. Well, usually there was a big pot of money involved, not her butt, but her butt is what was in jepordy tonight.

((Xephia: sorry, i missed that. it gets confusing with so many chars.))

Chun stiffened, flattening himself against the wall. He heard noise coming from... somewhere down the street. "Later, sweetheart." He let go of Eden and leapt for the wall over her head. He landed noiselessly and, scampering like a lizard, made his way up the wall to a window. He climbed through the shattered pane, cutting his arm on the broken glass. Swearing under his breath, Chun wiped the blood as well as he could on his pant leg and moved stealthily down the hall toward the classroom from which the noise came.

Using the shadows to their best effect, he slid unseen into the room and surveyed its occupants critically. A pair of winged humans, it would seem. Supposing himself a match for the pair of them, Chun stepped out of the shadows.

"Evening, gents."

((OoC: In their next post, can everyone just sort of sum up exactly where they are and what they're doing in a sentance or two? Irish is right, it's going to get confusing unless we keep track of who's doing what.

Art and Nero are on the second floor of a school building attacking Morgra's characters. The_Irish_one's character just arrived.))

Someone stepped through the classroom door. A tall, pale haired someone.

"Nero?" Art whispered, tapping the older Angel on the shoulder. Nero made to shrug Art off, about to fire, when the person spoke.

"Fuck," Nero swore, jumping to his feet and spinning around. He instinctively pushed Art behind him and into the wall. Looking out from behind Nero's wings, Art watched with wide eyes. Was this man friends with the two people outside? Had this been their plan? He didn't look very friendly.

Without a word, Nero raised the gun so that it was level with the man's eyes, his own eyes narrowing. "Who the hell are you and what do you want with us?"

((Sorry, I'm stuck right now. But Brennan is upstairs alone in an old abandoned cafe, looking for food and water. Josie and Annika are in the basement of the cafe, doing the same thing. They haven't actually 'entered' yet, though - I ended my post just as Josie jumped down to the floor of the basement - so if someone wants, they can already be in the basement and react, or walk in the basement later. I guess it has an outside entrance, too.))

((i'm in the classroom, talking to nero and art))

"You're awfully trigger-happy, feather-boy. I'm just trying to survive in this creep-infested hole someone had the gall to call a city. Aren't we all?"

He flicked his fingers casually by his side, manipulating the air around the gun's barrel so that it would twist it sideways. "And don't point that at me, alright?"

((wait, what was god-modding? i'm confused..... um, i'll try this, tell me if it doesn't fix the problem. just so you know, chun's magic is line-of-sight. meaning, if he can see it, he can effect it. the only way to stop him between sending the magic and its effect is by blocking his line of sight.))

((Irish, could you edit your post please? That's Godmoding. When roleplaying, you should always give your opponent a chance to dodge an attack, even if it isn't aimed directly at them. =] ))

Matvey cursed as a bullet whizzed by his head, and he dashed out to where the shotgun was laying on the ground. Someone was shouting at him, but he couldn't make out what they were saying. He scooped up the shotgun from the ground and ran into the building, slamming the door shut. He caught his breath while loading the shotgun, looking around for Gosha. But he wasn't there. Suddenly, Matvey was hit by a terrible headache. He cursed. He was running out of blood. If he didn't get some soon, he'd be gone - mentally, at least. And who knew what he would do then.

Gosha raced around the school, knowing the longer he took to find them, the more likely Matvey would find them first. IT was his hope that he could find their attackers and work things out with them before Matvey did something stupid. In the state he was currently in, he wouldn't be surprised. On the second floor, he found them. Three people, two with wings, one without. One of them had a gun. At first, they didn't notice him, and Gosha cleared his throat nervously.

"Umm...hi?" he said nervously. Suddenly, this didn't seem to be such a good idea.
