Hey guys,

I want to create my own world on my laptop, and not necessarily 3D, I want to be able to create landscapes with buildings and cities etc, and not to mention different continents and all the different ladscapes that will entail. As well as characters etc.

So my question for all of you are:
What softwares are out there either 2D or 3D that can accomplish buildings, characters and landscapes?
By the way I'm not made of money, so the cheaper the better.

Just to make this more interesting...
Let's keep the thread open and discuss what will go into these worlds.....

My first comment is a Graveyard with a grave digger thrown in as a character.

Now the rest of you need to add some thing to this world....oh, and always type the previous comment as well as your own, it'll get funnier as it goes on.

Go on, just type something....

I'd recommend Google SketchUp for free 3D: http://sketchup.google.com/.

For 2D, there's some free map-making software out there, such as AutoREALM (http://sourceforge.net/projects/autorealm/) and some online generators. Stonesword will let you lay out your own (http://www.stonesword.com/) or for random/premade maps, try Gozzy's: http://www.gozzys.com/

You might want to try a demo of one of the non-free 2D packages, since they're much better. I recommend Dundjinni (http://www.dundjinni.com/info/demo.htm), but if you're serious about a whole world, you might want something higher-powered like ProFantasy's line (http://www.profantasy.com/) or Fractal Mapper (http://www.nbos.com/products/mapper/mapper.htm).

Blender.org

It's a freeware open-source 3D developing tool. Has a bit of a learning curve, but lots of possibilities if you are willing to spend the time to create all of your landscapes vertice by vertice. Might be a way to keep you busy until the 1st.

Althought it's probably not as advanced as you'd like, I find that SimsCity and Sims 2 are useful for creating cities and characters, imagining them, styling etc. The only problem is that you run the risj of becoming too engaged in the game and getting distracted from writing, also, the natural limitations of the game constrict your own creativity, but what the hell, I think it's fun :)
