Hey everyone, my name is Maurie and this is my 2nd year in Nanowrimo and my first year as ML. I won Nanowrimo in 2007.
This is a new role for me so I'm open to ideas and suggestions. I do have a facility that we can use in Broken Arrow with inernet access. I've cleared out 3 rooms upstairs in my office/studio for use.

I'll also be exploring how to publicize Nanowrimo in Tulsa and have already taken some steps towards that.

My next step is to schedule the first of our write ins and I'd like to see how many would be available on November 1, which I believe is a Saturday. You can post to this forum or you can email me directly at maurietraylor@yahoo.com. Feel free to email me suggestions on what you'd like to see to support your goal of winning Nanwrimo this year. Food? Hours to write?

Looking forward to a great Nanowrimo year!

I have a day job now (yay!), so I'm open to just about any scheduled gathering in the evening hours. Also have a laptop this year, so I'm not relying exclusively on my Palm, so a write-in or few would be cool. Approximately where in Broken Arrow is your facility? (/me imagines a nondescript warehouse atop a nuclear-blast-proof underground lair filled with all kinds of high-tech flashy-shiny goodies.) As for food, we need something that promotes procrastination, salty things, gooey things, yoghurt covered pretzels are both, Yay! And Cheetos! Nothing can keep you away from your computer like the fear of getting nasty orange fingerprints all over the keyboard. (J/K re promoting procrastination.) Hours: Evening, say 7pm to whenever is a good time for most people, I think.

My facility is available during daytime hours anytime. My office hours are on T, W, Thur afterenoon and my main office/store/studio is downstairs so upstairs is quiet and perfect for writing. There is ample wireless available and I am checking with my service provider to insure that. If you have one of those magic devices that allow you to get internet virtually anywhere, then by all means, use that as well.

As for evening hours, T, Th are good and I am open to other times. In short, if we all work together I'm sure we can accomodate busy schedules.

As for the actual location - it is Broken Arrow on Broadway, right across from the Tulsa Library (411 W Broadway). It is in the oldest existing house in Broken Arrow and it is from there that i do my design business (renovations and such). As for furnishings, I have chairs that are overstuffed and some that are not. Desks and tables are also available.

I think Nov 1 is the best day for the first write in BUT I think that some prep work the last week in October is in order so we don't lose time getting things arranged. How about Oct 30, Thursday night, 7 PM being the first day that we meet at the location as a group and get a feel for the number that we need so that I can make sure we have ample lighting, tables, chairs for everyone?

That meeting will allow us to have some housekeeping tasks as for food, drinks and other important (!!!) aspects of writing.
Of course, write ins are designed to assist all of us in keeping motivated and I do have some resources that we will be using for prompts and the like. I know we'll learn a lot from each other.

There is one night in November - Nov 6 - that may be more challenging as it is the "visiting artist" night at my shop where I highlight a local artist and their work. It is a great event and you are more than welcome to be upstairs and the shop will most certainly be open, just want to let you know there will be more in the shop and could be busier.

Still not as busy as chess night on Friday's at Borders, though.

:)

Thank you for your comments and I look forward to making this the best Nanowrimo ever.

I'll be in Calgary for the World Fantasy Convention at the start of NaNo08, so things are out for me until at least November 3, but I'm game for write-ins post WFC. :)

Year 7 for me (or is it 8? Good grief....). Woo!

The 30th at 7 is OK for me, but I have to be at work at 9pm. I think 7 would be ok if you don't mind my having just rolled out of bed to be there.

I'm off Saturday, Sunday and Monday and I work overnights on all of the others. Saturday the 1st is good for me if it's an evening thing (I have to sleep at least a couple of hours). I already planned on starting at midnight (lots of free time at work). I'll also have use of a laptop this year (although it isn't mine). It has a wireless card and I do have a Sprint aircard I may be able to use, but that will depend on the signal.

The 30th is a Thursday, right? ...Yes, I'll probably be available. Unfortunately the earliest I could get a laptop would be December, but I've always written longhand anyway. The 1st is also feasible, though I'll have to work out a few things.

Another question I've got is transportation. In this age of $4/gal gas (though I have noticed it's going down lately, I don't think it will last), does anyone have suggestions as to carpooling? I'm in S. Tulsa and could pay for the gas if there's a driver that's coming from the same direction.

I have a tentative road trip planned for mid- to late-November, so I'll be out of touch for maybe a week, but it's still in the outline stages, so I'll do what I can to schedule it around write-ins.

I agree with the comment above - you're being extremely accommodating and I just want to thank you right off the bat for it. :D It's also cool that you live in BA since I do as well. Carpooling is an excellent idea, so holler at me (prettykittyaya[at]gmail[dot]com if anyone wants to participate!

My only problem is that we are hosting a Halloween/Day of the Dead party on Nov 1 so more than likely I will be unavailable. However, the 30th is open for me and I would love to meet other Tulsa participants.

...back to work now >_>

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and looking forward to getting started. I've been re-reading a great resource, "Writing for Story" by a pulitizer prize winning journalist and it is helping me get the basis for where my novel is going.

One note for all who attend write-ins: Nanowrimo does ask that we contribute in some way to their organization. While I'm not big on "passing the hat" I do want you to be aware that the opportunity to give to Nanowrimo will be made available at each write in. You are more than free to refrain from giving or free to give, whichever best serves you. Absolutely no pressure will be made for you to do either, I promise.

Further, please note that my location is a design studio and there are retail items here. Please know that I am happy for you to come and write and enjoy our time together, no purchase required! I promise a relaxed and enjoyable writing experience for everyone as far as I am able to make it so!

This write-in is falling on a payday so who knows how much I'll part with. :D NaNoWriMo will definitely be getting a small amount from me this year. I'm just so excited about being so close to other active NaNo-ers. Ever since I first signed up, there have been only a few who lived too far away to get together with.

Just a quick note to say thanks again to Maurie for organizing everything, and especially for opening up her studio for us. It looks like a cozy, comfy place to lose yourself in your writing and I look forward to writing there.
