Today in the car I heard Natasha Bedingfield's song "Unwritten," and, for once, really listened to the lyrics:

I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned
...

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

...

No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

I've never heard a better song to play on November 1. Agree? Or does anyone know a great song that could challenge it?

Last year, we had Mimi, a song all about Mimi, who was doing NaNoWriMo. I apologise if the lyrics are wrong in some places. I know I got most of them correct.

Mimi is quite light-headed, hyper and so excited;
She's signed up for NaNoWriMo!
Mimi's novel grew and grew,
But things slowed down--it's now Week Two
And she still has forty-three thousand words to go!

Mimi calls her friends and cries,
About her novel's sad demise...
But they said, 'Keep on writing, don't be a dope!
So what if your novel's under-weighted?
Keep on fighting, you can't hope!
Add some footnotes--annotate it!'

Mimi says 'Okay, okay, I won't give up, at least today
And hey, I'll write about my boyfriend Tim!'
But Tim, he frowned and said a curse,
Cause he hasn't seen her since November first
And wants to know what Mimi wrote about him!

So Mimi shows him chapter twenty-three,
where he saves the whole world
And wins the lottery and he said
'Keep on writing, don't live on hope!
Food and sleep are overrated!'

Keep on fighting, don't give up hope,
When creativity has vacated...
NaNo, NaNoWriMo,
NaNo, NaNoWriMo, (NaNoWriMo),
NaNo, NaNoWriMo...

For me it has to be "Weird Science". It keeps me from getting too serious and broody.

(Weird science)
Plastic tubes and pots and pans
Bits and pieces and
Magic from the hand
We're makin'

(Weird science)
Things I've never seen before
Behind bolted doors
Talent and imagination

(Weird science)
Not what teacher said to do
Makin' dreams come true
Living tissue, warm flesh

(Weird science)
Plastic tubes and pots and pans
Bits and pieces (and)
Bits and pieces (and)

CHORUS
(Bits of) my
creation--Is it
real?
It's my creation--I do not know
No hesitation--No heart of gold
Just flesh and
blood--I do not know

From my heart and from my hand
Why don't people understand
My intentions . . . .
Oooh, weird . . . .
Weird science!!

(Weird science)
Magic and technology
Voodoo dolls and chants
Electricity
We're makin'

(Weird science)
Fantasy and microchips
Shooting from the hip
Something different
We're makin'

(Weird science)
Pictures from a magazine
Diagrams and charts
Mending broken
hearts (and makin')

(Weird science)
Something like a recipe
Bits and pieces . . . .
Bits and pieces . . . .

Lol, that is the song that came to mind when I saw the subject. I heard that today and thought that it would be a good NaNo theme song :D

Okay, first of all, what tune does this song go to?

Secondly, is that Tim as in famous Tim of The Book of Tim? Or is it just a random name that got thrown in there?

I vote for "Die, Vampire, Die" from the musical [title of show]. It's about things that will keep you from pursuing your creative dreams. Y'know, vampires. I've been planning to show it to the NYC WriMos at the nearest write-in. The last verse:

[spoken]The final vampire is the vampire of despair. It will wake you up at four in the morning to say things like "What do you think you're doing?" "You'll never be good enough." "You look like a fool." Why is it that if some guy came up to me on the subway platform and said these things, I would think he was a mentally ill asshole, but if the vampire in my head says it, it's the voice of reason?

[song]
You have a story to tell, pull your novel out of that sock drawer! [[I KNOW! Perfect much?]]
You have a painting to paint, you best paint it and then paint some more!

Oh baby you must escape it
Grab it by the nape of the neck, by the trachea,
F***in' break it, c'mon drive the stake in,
Now there's no mistakin', now you're shakin' bakin'!

Die vampire, I said now die vampire,
Die, vampire, die.

In fly the vampires,
Oh my the vampires,
Then die the vampires,
Filling you with life, creativity,
All that your art can need.
Die vampire, die vampire,
Die vampire, die!

Hopefully I got most of the lyrics right...

Well, I found this one too...

Sheryl Crow "The Book"

I read your book
And I find it strange
That I know that girl and I know her world
A little too well
And I didn't know
By giving my hand
That I would be written down, sliced around
Passed down among strangers' hands

Three days in Rome
Where do we go
I'll always remember
Three days in Rome

Never again
Would I see your face
You carry a pen and a paper
And no time and no words you waste
Oh, you're a voyeur
The worst kind of thief
To take what happened to us
To write down everything
That went on between you and me

Three days in Rome
And I stand alone
I'll always remember
Three days in Rome

And what do I get
Do I get revenge?
While you lay it all out
Without any doubt
Of how this would end
Sometimes it goes
And sometimes we come
To learn by mistake
That the love you once made
Can't be undone

Three days in Rome
I laid my heart out
I laid my soul down alone
I'll always remember
Three days in Rome

The Mimi song goes along with an awesome comic series. I forget who it's by, but their page is something like WILL WRITE FOR CHOCOLATE I think. I love those comics :). I think Unwritten is a very good one for NaNo.

I've been workin' on my NaNo
All the live long day
I've been drinkin' lots of caffinne
And my nerves are on the fray

Can't you hear you keyboard clicking
You're up so early in the morn
And now you plot line, it is failing
Now your character is made of corn!

I thought this one was a good one (change the words myself about 3 weeks ago)

I got nano fever it's burning in my brain
I've got nano fever it's driving me insane
We got nano fever, we're flipping our bandanas
Been nano-ing so long that we have simply gone bananas

Ariba!
Chica chica boom
A chica chica boom boom chic
Chica chica boom
A chica chica boom boom chic

We got nano fever we've lost what sense we had
We got nano fever, we're all going mad

My sanity is hanging by a thread
Since we're not yet writing I've gone out of my head
We've been planning, plotting, ready to write...
Not yet we're not! Ha ha heh!

Grab your pens and pencils too
Find the plot you wrote
Damn it sucks, your keyboards fucked
And now the comp is broke
First you write and then you type
Will we reach the end?
Caffeine, sugar, what we can find
To stop us dropping dead.

We got nano fever
No if's, and's, or but's
We're disoriented
And demented
And a little nuts

Nano-ing both day and night
I feel my hands grow number as I write
I feel half dead, my mind gives up the plot
Then the voices start again...but will they stop?

We were planning plotting.. we want to start to write....
But it's alright

coz...
I've got nano fever
I think I've lost my grip
I'd like to get my hands on
Another manuscript

I was floating 'neath a tropic moon
And dreaming of a blue lagoon
Now I'm crazy as a loon

Nano fever has ravaged nano boards
This normally sane society now needs a psycho ward
We were panning, plotting, the story writes itself
And now we're all ready
To beat ourselves

Nano fever!

This one isn't entirely related to NaNo, but End of an Era, but Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQA2h-v-UrM), or at least part of the song, fits the end of NaNo really well. For all those novels that you love, but you're done with writing them.

Lyrics:
End of an Era, Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls
Did you ever wonder what
Would happen when it ends?
How can we let go of the,
The ones who we call friends?
And I know, it’s only a story but,
For so many it’s more than that
It’s a world all on it’s own
Where we want to put on that Sorting Hat.

I will miss the train ride in,
And the pranks pulled by the twins.
And though it’s nowhere I have been,
I’ll keep on smiling from
The times I’ve had with them.

Could there ever be again,
Another one like this?
One that’s brought together and
Started its music movement.

I will miss the train ride in,
And the pranks pulled by the twins.
And though it’s nowhere I have been,
I’ll keep on smiling from
The times I’ve had with them.

Soon we will see it closed,
The final chapter exposed,
It’s an end of era,
And I’m seeing clearer,
That nothin will ever be the same.

I will miss the train ride in,
And the pranks pulled by the twins.
And though it’s nowhere I have been,
I’ll keep on smiling from
The times I’ve had with them.

Yes, it was originally written about the Harry Potter series, (hence the Sorting Hat and the reference to Wrock), but I think that it fits really well with the end, or near the end, of a story. And even though we have NaNo every year (this had better keep going for a long time!), it is 'an end of sorts,' at least for this year.
Any one else going to play it on the 30th?

Of course, there's only one true NaNoWriMo song! :-p

Lazlo Bane - Superman (Scrubs' theme song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDsuJAE2oro

Out the door just in time
Head down the 405
Gotta meet the new boss by 8 am

The phone rings in the car
The wife is working hard
She's running late tonight again

Well
I know what I've been told
You gotta work to feed the soul
But I can't do this all on my own
No, I know I'm no Superman
I'm no Superman

You've got your love online
You think you're doing fine
But you're just plugged into the wall

And that deck of tarot cards
Won't get you very far
There ain't no hand to break your fall

Well
I know what I've been told
You gotta know just when to fold
But I can't do this all on my own
No, I know I'm no Superman
I'm no Superman

That's right
== harmonica solo ==

You've crossed the finish line
Won the race but lost your mind
Was it worth it after all

I need you here with me
Cause love is all we need
Just take a hold of the hand that breaks the fall

Well I know what I've been told
Gotta break free to break the mold
But I can't do this all on my own
No I can't do this all on my own
I know that I'm no Superman
I'm no Superman

Someday we'll be together
Someday, someday
Someday we'll be together
Someday
I'm no Superman

I totally vote for "Die, Vampire, Die!" from [title of show].

It is one of the best motivational songs I've ever heard. lol.
When I saw [title of show] I sat third row and Susan was like singing at my friend an I during the part "You have a story to tell pull your novel out of that sock drawer"

"Listen closely,a vampire is any person or thought or feeling
that stands between you and your creative self expression,
but they can assume many seductive forms.
Here’s a few of them!
Backup:
Tell us Susan!
Susan:
First up are you pigmy vampires.
They’ll swarm around you head like gnats and say things like:
Male Backup:
Your teeth need whitening
Female Backup:
You went to state school?
Male Backup:
You sound weird
All:
Shakespeare, Sondheim, Sedaris
Susan:
Did it before you and better than you, or they might say that you cannot
sing good enough to be in a musical, or they might say:
Backup:
Ooh, your song’s derivative,
Ooh, your song’s derivative,
Ooh, your song’s derivative,

Susan:
To keep that song from you! Just tell them:
Backup:
Die vampire, die!
Susan:
Brothers and sisters, next up is the air freshener vampire,
she might look like you mama, or your old fat-a**, fat aunt Fanny.
She smells something unpleasant in what you’re creating.
She’ll urge you to:
Backup:
(Spraying sound)
Susan:
It with some pine fresh smell ’em ups.
The air freshener vampire doesn’t want you to write about
Backup:
bad language, blood, or blow jobs
Susan:
She wants you to clean it up and clean it out.
Which will leave your work toothless, gutless, and crotchless
but, you’ll be left with two tight paragraphs,
All kittens that your grandma would be so proud of.
You look at that air freshener vampire in her fat a**, fat old f'ing face and you say
All:
(Chanting)
Susan:
The last vampire is the mother of all vampires and that is the vampire of despair.
It’ll wake you up at 4am to say things like:
Backup:
Who do you think you’re kidding?
You look like a fool.
No matter how hard you try, you’ll never be good enough
Susan:
Why is it that if some dude walked up to me on the subway platform
and said these things, I’d think he was a mentally ill a**hole,
but if the vampire inside my head says it,
It’s the voice of reason.
Backup:
You have a story to tell, pull your novel out of that sock drawer!
You have a painting to paint, you best paint it and then paint some more!"

I’m sitting here in a boring room
It’s just another rainy Sunday afternoon
I’m wasting my time, I got nothing to do
I’m hanging around, I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens – and I wonder
I’m driving around in my car
I’m driving too fast, I’m driving too far
I’d like to change my point of view
I feel so lonely, I’m waiting for you
But nothing ever happens, and I wonder

I wonder how, I wonder why
Yesterday you told me ‘bout the blue blue sky
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
I’m turning my head up and down
I’m turning, turning, turning,
turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just a another lemon tree
SING!
dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dee, dah, dah,
dah, dah, dah, dah, dee, dah, dah,
dah, di, di, di, dah
I’m sitting here, I miss the power
I’d like to go out taking a shower
But there’s a heavy cloud inside my head
I feel so tired, put myself into bed
Well, nothing ever happens – and I wonder

Isolation is not good for me
Isolation – I don’t want to – sit on a lemon tree
I’m stepping around in a desert of joy
Baby anyhow I’ll get another toy
And everything will happen – and you’ll wonder
I wonder how I wonder why
Yesterday you told me ‘bout the blue, blue sky
And all that I can see
Is just another lemon tree
I turn my head up and down…….
turning, turning, turning, turning, turning around
And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree
And I wonder, I wonder!

I like the Chariots of Fire soundtrack. Like it's a race that's starts with anticipation, takes off in a rush, builds with long strides, chaces the hope of winning and crescendos at the end.

I was listening to an old Keane CD and I heard the song "Can't Stop Now" and it has officially become MY theme song!

I noticed tonight that the world has been turning
While I've been stuck here dithering around
Well I know I said I'd wait around till you need me
But I have to go, I hate to let you down
But I can't stop now
I've got troubles of my own
Cause I'm short on time
I'm lonely
And I'm too tired to talk

I noticed tonight that the world has been turning
While I've been stuck here withering away
Well I know I said I wouldn't leave you behind
But I have to go, it breaks my heart to say

That I can't stop now
I've got troubles of my own
Cause I'm short on time
I'm lonely
And I'm too tired to talk

No one back home
I've got troubles of my own
And I can't slow down
For no one in town
And I can't stop now

And I can't slow down
For no one in town
And I can't stop now
For no one

The motion keeps my heart running
The motion keeps my heart running
The motion keeps my heart running
The motion keeps my heart running

I remember when Unwritten was suggested last year.

This year my song that explains my writing and story is different ( to last years on unwritten)

it is Across the Universe by the Beatles

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva
Jai guru deva

They've come to witness the beginning
The rebirth of paradise, despoiled by mankind
Remember me and your true self as well
Also that which you must become
The one who will lead us to paradise
With blood stained hands...

That would fit mine from the past three years.

I don't know, looking to the future, i'm starting to think Neverending Story is the most apt description of my novel this year.
