Last sentence post

We had great fun with this in past years so I'm putting it out there to try again this year: when you finish your writing for the day, post your last sentence here. It's freaky how everyone's sentences combine into a narrative that almost makes sense after a while :) Good luck/good writing, guys! :)
How are you motivating yourself to the finish line?

Just as the title suggests I'm wondering what my other fellow london & area NaNownians (not a word but should be!) are doing to push through to the finish. For me just prior to hitting the 39k mark I made Devil Food cake cupcakes and iced them with wordcount prompts.

40k, 43k,45k,47k and 50k and a bonus finishline one. Then I made an identical set for the boyfriend and vowed neither of us could eat them until I crossed each wordcount. Being we both have a sweet tooth it motivates me to get to the next one and him to push me there. (of course prior to knowing what they were all about he one of the 45k ones, oh well he'll just have to push me further so he can get that 47k one faster ;)

It worked too as I pushed straight from 39k to 41k the first day I baked them, and am now at the 43k marking.

----------
TGIO Party

So it's traditional to hold the TGIO party after NaNoWriMo is over. This year it will be held on Saturday, December 5th at Little Red Roaster by Central Library (in the area NOT in the library and closest to Dundas Street). Probably from 1pm until whenever we get sick of each other/they kick us out. ;)

I'm working on some fun stuff we could do apart from just sit and chat. AND I have a little prize thing for the one with the highest word count. (I don't count in this case). And there may be little goodies for the rest of you too. ;)

If you're going to come along, RSVP here and feel free to offer up some ideas of fun stuff we could do!
Saturday Write-A-Thon/Write-In

Okay, so in another thread there was some talk of an all-night write-a-thon. Because of a personal matter, I won't be able to attend or organize this. As an alternative, I'm proposing a write-a-thon during the day on Saturday, say from 10am-4 or 5pm in and around Central Library. There are outlets available for laptops and a variety of places to get food and drinks.

There is already a write-in scheduled for 1-3 at Coffee Culture across the street. We will still meet there if you don't want to do the whole day thing.

No one has to stay for the entire day. You are free to arrive and leave any time you want!

Suggested schedule:

10-12.30ish - 2nd floor, Central Library (at the tables directly in front of the escalators, right behind the standing computers)
12.30ish-3 - Coffee Culture on Dundas, across the street from the main entrance of Central Library
3-4 or 5 - Back to the library, beside Little Red Roaster.

Will anyone be able to come for the day? I'll be able to get a ride downtown, so I can stay for the whole day. I just don't want to sit there by myself for most of it! :p If I have to bribe you with cookies, I will. ;)
What word do you use the most?

Go to http://www.wordle.net and copy/paste your novel so far for a nifty word cloud. What is your most used word?

Mine is my FMC's name, Ellis. It's GINORMOUSLY HUGE. The next largest words are only half the size and are 'back', 'just', 'one' and 'looked'.
Nov 21-22 write-a-tion is there anyone interested?

About then most of us might be a little low on the word count, and since the national organization is meeting in San Fran that weekend, I thought maybe we could have our own get together.

Deno suggested something like The Golden Griddle on Wellington. It is open 24hrs has food and lots of fresh coffee, and 24 hr breakfast. It is a pretty large venue. Maybe we could approach them and get them to push 4 or 5 tables together in the back corner? Maybe we could convince them to throw in a bottomless coffee cup flat rate for anyone with a laptop?

Maybe from Saturday noon through to Sunday noon? Or at the very least 6pm Sat until 6 am Sun? Drop in spend a few hours banging away and boosting the word count?

Perhaps some input from our ML is appropriate at this point. Jen is this idea NaNoWriMo worthy?

Anyone else have any ideas here?
Word wars!

I know it's kind of late in the game to be starting this thread, but here it is.

Because, well, I don't know about the rest of you but real life has been kicking my butt this month, and I find myself waaaay behind in word count. Solution? Word wars! Nothing like using that competitive spirit to boost the ol' WC.

Post here if you're up for it. I'm fond of 10 minute sprints, myself, but other people like longer ones - whatever gets those words out! I know there's a word war thread in the main forums but this may be a bit easier (or less intimidating) for some, instead of diving head first into a site-wide thread. It can be pretty hectic out there. :)

Also, for those on twitter, @nanowordsprints has been running some 40 minute sprints the last few nights, so you may want to check that out.
Your Novel in a Nutshell

Idea was stolen from this thread here.

In most word programs, there's an option to autosummarize your work with hilarious results. Share your results.

Here is my work of genius:

Quote:
Ellis cried. Ellis smirked.

Ellis thought. “Ellis! “No,” replied Ellis. “Ellis, right? Ellis asked. Ellis asked.

Ellis demanded.

“Ellis?” “Sorry,” said Ellis. Coming, Ellis?”

Ellis asked.

Ellis asked. Ellis gasped.

Ellis cried. Ellis whispered. “Ellis! Here!” “Ellis,” said Mazie. “Ellis, your hair!

Nanoisms!

The whole point of Nanowrimo is to shove your inner editor in a closet for the month and get on with the writing. This has a multitude of side effects, one of them being the (um, relative) ease of actually completing 50,000 words in a month.

Other side effects, however, are much more amusing. You know those silly typo's and all those times you put in the wrong word because you weren't really thinking about it? I want to hear the really good ones. The ones that make you shake your head and laugh, because seriously, how did you not catch that? That's what I'm talking about. So let's hear 'em, London! What have you got?

My first one:

"I thought I was going crazy, or having some sort of stupid emotional breakfast."

I just HAD to share this bit.

Little background: Magni and Alexi are soul mates, each has one half of the other's soul. Today is the ceremony to bind them.

~~~
Chapter Twenty-One
Alexi's hand dragged down Magni's arm as she left him semi-reluctantly. Artie smiled, “You'll see him again soon enough. Come on, I want to show you the dress I have for you.”
That peaked Alexi's interest and she followed Artie into the house much more willingly. Magni shook his head as his father and brother materialized beside him.
Matheus grinned, “Women and their fashions. But just you wait, Brother, she's going to be a knock out.” He clapped him on the shoulder. “Come on, Father and I have plans for you.” He and Llyr shifted into birds of prey and circled Magni's head until he shifted.
Alexi watched through the kitchen door as the three men flew off. “Will I ever get used to it?”
“Of course you will, my dear, you were born to be among us.” Artie smiled and hugged the young girl. “Come now, I prepared a bath for you, then I will show you the dress.” Artie led the way upstairs and bustled away again once she closed the door on Alexi in the tub.
Alexi slipped into the steaming, strawberry scented water with a sigh and a smile. Tonight she would be married. She frowned, wondering if married was the right word, then she shrugged. It didn't matter, she would be his for all time. She felt whole when she was with him and like a part of her was missing when she wasn't. It had started when she was thirteen, though she didn't know what she was missing. There was just something there at times, gone for months at a time. Months she'd spent desolate and lonely.
A smile curved her lips as she washed herself, sending the images to Magni. You brat! Do you know what you are doing to me?
The same thing I am doing to myself, Beloved. See you soon. Then she deliberately blocked their connection, not realizing that Magni hadn't fully left her mind since the first day he'd seen her, except when he was hunting. She washed her hair and worked painstakingly at removing all the extra hair from her body. Then she rose carefully, trying not to slosh the water on the floor, and reached for a towel. She wrapped her hair in one then grabbed another and dried off. Wearing it like a toga, she padded down the hall, looking for Artie.
“We're in here dear.” Artie's voice came from her bedroom.
Alexi looked a little alarmed at the 'we' in the statement and peered cautiously through the door. She nearly fled when Artie and three strange women turned to her.
Artie reached out a hand. “Don't be afraid, these are my sisters and they are going to help prepare you. This is Thena,” the blonde one nodded as Artie turned to a brunette, “This is Lacey. And finally, this is Helena.” Artie pulled Alexi into the room. “Now, just let us do the work. Look at the dress my sisters made for you, isn't it beautiful?”
It hung from a dressmaker's dummy. An invisible strap held it across the back, holding the front in place where it stretched across the front of the dummy. It was formfitting to the hips where the skirts fell in soft folds, a slight ruffle around the hem. The color of the fabric rippled from emerald green to pine green in the shifting light, sparkling slightly. Elbow length gloves in the same material were draped over one shoulder.
Alexi gasped. “That's for me?” All four women nodded. “It's so beautiful!”
“As are you, little one.” Helena smiled. “Our sister was right. I only hope Magni is deserving of you.” All four of the older women laughed.
Alexi blushed as the four of them began bustling around her, arguing over her hair, undergarments and just about everything. Alexi just let them move her as they would. Soon she was dressed, with the gloves, and barefoot, the skirts of the gown just brushing her ankles. Her hair was pinned on top of her head, except for a few ringlets trailing over the nape of her neck. All four of the women congratulated each other and beamed at the slip of the girl. Alexi stared at herself in astonishment as they turned her to the mirror.
“That's me?” She watched her reflection move its mouth in time with hers and just shook her head. She was very nervous all of a sudden.
Artie came up behind her and smiled. “Yes it is Alexi. Magni will be speechless when he sees you. It's time. Give us five minutes, then follow us down.”
Alexi nodded, watching as the women filed out of the room. Then she moved to the window, staring out at the backyard as it filled with people. The earthen altar was gone and torches had been lit in a large circle against the gathering gloom of the evening. People were filling the yard, once again forming a circle that was open towards the house. Suddenly three large birds flew into the yard, circling to the ground and landing on their feet as Llyr, Magni and Matheus. Alexi smiled at the sight of her beloved. There you are.
Indeed, and where are you? He asked the question even as his eyes found her in the window. His brother and father flanked him, all in formal dress, and Alexi heard Artie's voice in her head, telling her it was time.
Alexi moved on bare feet down the stairs and out the kitchen door. She felt like she was floating and had eyes only for her Mate. She never noticed the circle closing behind her, or the gasps of delight at her appearance. She glided to Magni's side, taking the hand he offered her.
Magni looked down at her, awed by her beauty. He had to be poked in the back to begin. Alexi heard the words she was to say flow into her head as Magni began to speak. With his first words, silver sparkles began to form in the air around them. “My love, kiss me, let my breath be yours.”
Alexi's voice rose, musical and strong, “Let your breath be mine.”
“Remember me, for my soul remembers you.” The sparkles grew, dancing and swirling around them with his words.
“Love me, all of me, for all of me loves you.”
“Yield to love, for love conquers all.”
“As love for you has conquered me.” Alexi's voice was breathless. She could feel the bond between them strengthening, a hundred million golden threads pulling their souls closer.
“I am yours for all time.”
“As I am yours.”
“Our souls, once halved, are one, they glow with the same light.” Magni nearly gasped as his heart wrenched, skipped a beat then strengthened, beating in time with hers.
“For now, forever, across all time and space.”
Magni spoke his last line and the sparkles around them swirled, gathering speed with each word. “What once was mine, is forevermore yours.”
“What once was yours is forevermore mine.” As Alexi spoke the last words of the binding the sparkles closed in on them then exploded outwards, scattering over all gathered, spreading the love shared by two. Magni cupped Alexi's face and leaned down to kiss her.
St. Thomas meet-up for week two!
Between Friday and Saturday evening, which would be better for you guys? And what about a time? I'm free anytime after 4:30, so whether we meet in the afternoon or later in the evening, it's fine with me.
As for the venue, I'm going to go with one of my favorite places in town, the Coffee Culture on Talbot (between Manitoba and Alma). If we're going to have a good number, I'll reserve a couple of tables for us. I should ask that you bring a few bucks for a coffee or a muffin to support the fabulous establishment!
So you know who you're looking for, I look like this. Can't promise I'll be wearing the bunny ears, but I will so totally be wearing my Nanowrimo hoodie!
First sentence post (day one)
We have a last sentence of the day thread but I wanna know how you started your NaNo novel.
What was your first sentence?
Mine was...
Magni Tenoch was sitting on the patio of Sarah's Tea House, watching, waiting for his quarry.
Introduce Yourself!
So here's the obligatory introduction thread. Tell us about yourself!
I'll start us off...
Hello, I'm Jen and I'm a NaNo-holic. (or should that be NaNo-aholic?) This is my fifth year doing NaNo and I've won three times. I've never finished a novel and I prefer to believe that editing does not exist (apart from minor spelling and grammar mistakes). I love baking and sort of like cooking, even if no one here wants to eat what I make. (Which is why I'm glad for NaNo because you guys will eat the cookies I bake!) I'm a sad and delusional Leafs fan and I have tormented them before in my stories. I have a dog who will make sure I get out of the house once in a while to take a breather in November. I usually spend most of my free time (of which I have plenty) writing, reading, or procrastinating. I also love learning languages, even if my brain refuses to retain the information I give it.
I'm not sure what else to include here, so now it's over to you!
Go Jen Go!
Jen the Supreme is awesomely showing how fast people can write.
Last year, she cleared well over 400K during November doing multiple novels.
I am decent ( I type around 500 to 1000 words per hour of new material and put in around 4 to 5 hours of typing time on the computer a day ) when it comes to writing speed but Jen is incredible!
Hats off to Jen the Supreme who has already got her 50K and is fast on her way to 100K in the first week of November!
Go Jen Go!!!
The obligatory "what are you writing?" thread.
I know it's early, but I also figure some of you probably have an idea of what you'll be writing already. I sure don't, but I thought it'd be interesting to see what the rest of you are all thinking about.
Do you have any new, crazy ideas for this year? Are you thinking of trying a new genre or style? Or are you, like me, contemplating a sequel to last year's novel?
If I can't think of anything else, I figure I'll continue where I left off last year, which, plot-wise, was really only book one of at least two. I got lucky with the fade-to-black of plot resolution that happened there at the 50k mark. An action-adventure-spy-assasin-thriller sort of story, it involved a lot of badly written plot and even more plot holes. I left my heroes battered and beaten, trying to bring down a pseudo-mafia of organized crime run by the Boss. 'The Girl' I kept trying to include ended up being the hero's sister, and nothing romantic ever happened between anyone. The friendly mentor-slash-coworker turned into a bad guy and then turned into an ally. The follow-up novel would probably include the previously alluded to but never encountered Feds and maybe some global travel in lieu of all the driving that happened in last year's novel. Too bad last year's novel was so horrendously awful that I'd feel almost guilty trying to write the rest of the story. But hey, it's good to have a fallback.
Everybody's got a story, and that very well could be mine. What's yours?
LTC strike - 16 November
So London Transit drivers are planning on going on strike on the 16th, which will make it difficult for those of us who rely on the bus to make it to write-ins downtown. (Like me)
You can read their statements on the LTC site.
Should the strike go on as scheduled, we can schedule other write-ins closer to home. Feel free to post a message saying, "Hey, I live near _____ Library, anyone want to meet up for a write-in on Thursday?" or something like that.
I'm also open to other alternatives! I figured I'd post this now so those of us who take the bus to downtown write-ins will be prepared. :)
St. Thomas meet-up tonight!
I realize this is very short notice, but I'm meeting up with another Wrimo tonight at the Coffee Culture on Talbot (between Alma and Manitoba) around 8pm. If anyone in the area wants to join us, please do! My name's Tara and so you can find me, I look like this.
I promise I'll give you more notice for the next St. Thomas meet-up... possibly next Wednesday, but I'll work out the details soon!
Anyone in the St. Thomas area?
I'm hoping that my boyfriend will be generous enough to cart me to London and back at least once or twice during November so I can attend some write-ins. Buuuuuut I am also hoping that there might be a few Wrimos from St. Thomas that would want to stage a get-together here in town? If so I would be more than happy to act as an honorary St. Thomas ML and coordinate some meetings!
'Twas the Night Before NaNo
This piece of genius was written by eensybeensyspider, co-ML of the Flint, Michigan region and I needed to share it with you. Enjoy!
------------------------------
'Twas the night before NaNo, when all through the house
Not a keyboard was typing, not a click of a mouse.
The stickers were hung by the writer with care,
In Hopes that a Novel, soon would be there.
The Editors were nestled, all snug in their beds,
While visions of red pens, danced in their heads.
with Chris Baty in his viking hat and I in my shirt,
All the wrimo's world wide, sat waiting to work.
When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my writing spot, to see what was the matter.
Away to the window, I flew like a flash,
Tore open the window, threw up the sash.
The moon was big, with a very bright glow
and it looked like a screen that had something to show.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a story and eight characters.
With a little plot arc ,so lively and round,
I knew in a moment, "My Novel - I've found!"
More rapid then eagles the chapters they came
and the story whistled and shouted and called things by name,
"Now characters, Now plot arcs, now storylines and more,
"On conflict, On turmoil, On plot twists galore.
To the top of the plot line, to November's 50 K
Now write away, write away, write away today."
As dead words before the wild month fly,
When they meet with a Muse and mount to the sky
So up to my desk top these coursers, they flew
with a slew full of ideas, and my muse too.
And then in a twinkling I heard on my desk
The smattering of words, taking one last rest.
As I drew in my hand and was turning around
Appeared, did my muse, in one single bound.
It was dressed in all words, from it's head to it's foot
and it's clothes were all tarnished with erasure gook.
It's bundle of stories were flung on it's back
And it looked like Chris Baty - What's up with that?
It's eyes how they shimmered, It's dimples how scary,
It's cheeks were all blustery, it's smile so merry.
It's droll little mouth was drawn up like an "oh"
And not a beard on it's chin, that'd be freaky, ya know?
The stump of a pencil it held tight in it's teeth,
And punctuation encircled it it's head like a wreath.
It had a bright face and a round cuppa coffee
That shook when it laughed, without ever sloshing.
It was awkward and lumpy, a right crazy old elf
And I laughed when I saw it, inspite of myself.
A wink of Its eye and a twist of Its head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.
It spoke not a word, but went straight to my desk
And It looked at my blank page then said, "Surely you Jest"
Laying its fingers aside of my keys, It winked at me once,
And slid inward with ease.
It sprang on my screen, to the words it gave whistle
and away they all flew to it, like the down of a thistle
But I heard it exclaim, err it faded into the night
"Happy NaNo to all, tonight you shall write!"
- C.A. Dubois October 31, 2009
Insanely Yours,
Cylithria aka eensybeensyspider
------------------------------
P.S. - It's completely unedited because it's NaNo and editing is forbidden. ;) So lock away those inner editors now!
Kick-Off Party (and COOKIES!)
Yes indeedy, we are going to have a kick-off party! Traditionally it takes place on November 1st, but that's on a Sunday and we all know how AWESOME (not) the LTC bus schedules are. So I figured we could have it on Saturday, October 31st.
EDIT The Kick-Off will be held at Coffee Culture on RICHMOND STREET (Between Kent St and Dufferin St, across from St Peter's Cathedral) from 1pm-3pm! Please bring a bit of money to buy something because the lovely people at CC are going to reserve a few tables for us!
Why should you come to the Kick-Off Party? Because there will be COOKIES! And STICKERS! And LOOT BAGS! Plus a chance for some last-minute outlining in the company of other Wrimos.
By the way, the stickers arrived today and they're superb.
RSVP here so I know how many of you are going to be there. Thanks, and hope to see you there!
October meetings
I'll be holding two pre-NaNo meetings on Saturday October 17th and Saturday October 24th at Central Library. Exact location in the library and times to be determined, so stay tuned!
The purpose of these meetings is to get to know each other before November, see what we're like when we're fairly normal and not caffeine-addicted, crazy-eyed novelists bashing away at laptops and notebooks. ;)
I just wanted to give you a heads-up now since there seems to be a bit of a problem with sending regional emails for the moment.
I'll be updating with a time and place later this week.
November meetings and write-ins
I just realized how quickly November is coming so I think I should start planning the meetings and write-ins for November! I want to have them on a day that's convenient for most of you who want to go to them. I was thinking on a weekday evening since that's what worked a couple years ago. Unfortunately not everyone will be available on the day chosen, but feel free to take initiative and arrange a meeting at your convenience!
So let's hear from you! Which day of the week would be good for meetings?
----------
Welcome!
Hello! Look at this, shiny new forums, shiny new NaNoWriMo month coming up, and shiny new ML!
I'm Jen, your ML extraordinaire this year. If you were at meetings last year and/or the year before, I was the one who brought cookies. Will there be cookies again this year? Read on!
But first we need to get down to some business.
I would like to hold at least one or two meetings this month before the November madness sits in. That way we can get to know each other and discuss what you want out of the November meetings. I'm only available on weekends this month, so these meetings will probably be on a Saturday. I will keep you updated.
NaNoWriMo just wouldn't be the same without the Kick-Off Party! Usually this happens on November 1st, but since the 1st happens to be on a Sunday I thought we should have it on October 31st. Then those of us who rely on the bus don't have to fight with LTC's Sunday schedules.
As for regular November meetings, I'd like to have it on a day and time that's convenient for most of you. So let me know which day and time works best for you!
For the past two years, we had our meetings at Central Library. This proved to be very convenient indeed since they had free WiFi and hookups for laptops, handy research resources, free parking (if you have a library card), and generally quiet for those of us who want to get down to writing. Plus it's conveniently central to the rest of London so most of us don't have to commute too far. But if you know of a different spot that's just as convenient, but perhaps allows for a little more noise (I do recall being told to quiet down a couple times two years ago!), then do suggest it!
Oh, and those cookies I mentioned earlier? Yes I will be baking them again for you. Because I love you. You look great today, by the way. Have you been working out?
Feel free to open new threads here in the forum, get talking with other WriMos (because we know what you're going through in November), and have fun! Also feel free to message me with questions or concerns. Or if you just want to say 'hi'. Hope to see you at the meetings once they're organized!
Cheers,
Jen
