Just a little thing I was playing with to get me in the writing mood. Hope you enjoy :)
-----------------------------
Twas the night before NaNo, when all through the study
No ideas were coming, not even one cruddy.
Blank document opened in the processor with care,
In hopes that the Muse soon would be there.
Huddled and anxious, all cramped in my chair,
Tortured by visions of not having to care,
Like King in his mansion, and Koontz with his dog,
Neither need worry about the 30 day slog.
When in my cramped brain an idea it did dawn,
Of murders and mysteries my world would be formed .
Fingers on fire I typed up a storm,
A tale so outlandish and far from the norm.
A killing, a bird, a detective so fine,
I knew in that moment the idea was all mine.
More quirky than Christie, the tale found a name,
Pilfered quite quickly from James Mallahan Cain.
Seventh chapter, third line from the Postman Rings Twice
When the Greek he is singing about a dream that is nice,
I took that one line and cut some of the things,
I had my new title: Where the Nightingale Sings.
As ideas they go, this wasn't half bad
I'd not been this excited since I was a lad,
So down to the work, an outline begun,
And then I did notice I'd lost all the fun.
Hard work to create when your brain it does freeze,
The words they are icicles and the Muse is a tease.
Trapped in a moment, not the past not the future,
I feared that my tale had become one big blooper.
And then, in a twinkling, I remembered some words,
Advice from a writer about being like birds,
His name was Ray Bradbury, his name well renowned,
He said to all authors; build your wings on the way down.
So heartened and beaming, I went for a walk,
My outline and plot erased like old chalk.
In the burned autumn evening all chilly and cold,
I made a decision, so scary, yet bold.
With mere hours remaining till the month does begin,
I pulled up a clean page and put a title within.
No plot, no problem, no fear for this lad,
My wings not yet built, but I really am glad.
And to all those who worry, fret and do sigh,
About the writing not flowing, the Muse waving goodbye.
To those fellow travellers I pass on these sage words.
Don't worry, don't fret, be just like the birds.
