I've tried to get involved in the forums, but I feel like a kid stuck at the grown-ups table trying to participate in the conversation. I'm probably one of the elders over here so it's a paradox of Star Trek proportions. All these kids running around with their character bios and outlines and scatter-brain-plot-snowflake-clouds or whatever and I've got me and Harry ready to run off willy-nilly with Microsoft Word. It's a little daunting.

I started writing because it was fun and it got people to pay attention to me when I wasn't screwing something up. If I made myself write outlines and stuff it wouldn't be fun any more. What's the point if it's not fun?

Still my lack of MFA in writing is making me feel like I've got my face pressed against the glass when I'm not trying to butt into the grown-up writers' conversations.

I think it's great people have the brains and the know how around her to do all the fancy stuff, but I don't and I'm feeling lonely in a crowd. Anybody else out there scared to look like an idiot in front of the smart people?

Ah...don't let yourself feel like that!! I write by the seat of my (very thin) pants. I don't do outlines, character sketches, or any other type of thing. I research as I go, when needed, and the only research material I have at hand most of the time is a baby name book so I can name characters that pop up.

You don't need an MFA to write I'm living proof. I write for several blogs, and get paid for it! Three of my Nano's are in print. I don't have an MFA and don't intend to get one. I'm 47 years old and happy with what I write and enjoy doing it. It has to be fun or what's the point??

Can i join? Pleeeaseee? I've spent the last month or so banging on about this amazing plot I have; yet failing to actually do any of these so-called 'character bios'. I figure i'll get to know her as we spend the next 30 days together. . . For now, I know she is dead, and that's quite enough to contend with!

Deal! My kids are drummers so I know how to write to a steady beat. Let's have some fun :-)

The more the merrier. Slackers unite :-)

You're especially welcome because my story is going to be set in Wales and I've never been there. I'm planning a trip though to research my ancestors.

You're living my dream then. One of these days I'll get up the nerve. Completing NaNo this time is going to be my first step to becoming a working writer. Congratulations on your success and wish me luck :-)

I'm a reckless writer. I try to do bios and outlines and all that jazz but they never stick. I find more comfort in a free writing process. It might not make much sense at the end of 30 days, but there's always time for editing afterward. ^_^ Good luck to everyone!
