Dec 01 (A tuesday) YAY! WE WON! Party....

So, where do people want to have it this year?

Last year was Jamh's house (and didn't work too well for most to find, I believe)

The 2 years before that were the Boston Pizza behind the Walmart (Attempts to get a reservation at the Hillside one failed both years, iirc). So, this year:

Does Boston Pizza work? If not, where? Reservation is generally for 20-30, and any who participated can come, but it needs to be booked soon due to xmas parties and so forth.
Victorians with Purple Bars

Who's got their purple bar?

I know I do. I have to admit I'm rather saddened by my purple bar. I'm happy, but at the same time it means it's really over. I don't want it to be over. I'm not ready for that yet. I want to keep writing. This novel is finished, but there are more waiting to be written. Anyone else feeling like this?
post your best insults!

inspired by CrisisKris' *raising the dead* jokes in the 'When good nanos go... sideways' topic (special mention for Hack Hubbard on this one...)

so, everyone's gotta have at least one in their story... whether it's necromancers poking fun at another's sexual prowess or two vampires having a bitch-slap fight over who gets first dibs at a tasty guy's jugular... some of your characters have GOT to be angry/pissed off and throwing around some interesting insults...

and i want to hear/read them!

so post away! ...and if the context needs a little explaining, go ahead :)
Meetings at Camas

I talked to the people at Camas today, and I've got us set up. The ebst I could do was Saturdays at 3 PM. If this really doesn't work, let me know. I might be able to get something on Sundays, but it'd be pushing it. They're pretty booked this month, with so much stuff happening in November.

Camas is located on the corner of Quadra and King street, across the street (diagonally) from the Fairway Market. Everyone's welcome, both people who go to the UVic meetings and those that don't.
So no ML for Victoria...

I tried to get the ML position for Victoria, but no luck, apparently I need to have won NaNo....*sigh* Oh well, no goodies for us.

In any case, I'd like to organize at least one write-in a week. I know Sunday afternoons were the good time for a lot of folks last year, but I can't make them.

So I'm going to see about getting a room at UVic for a few hours on Thursday nights (maybe like 5-8 or something), and Tuesdays also work well for me.

Let me know what Victoria Wrimos think!
Goals for this week?

Anyone want to join me in an "accountability" pact? I really want to try and hit 45k by this time on the 22nd... so that's just under 2,500 words a day. Today I wrote the most in one day that I've managed for all of Nano (excepting the first day, when I had my usual burst of speed) - 3,417 - so I know I *can* do it. Now I just need help making sure that I *do*.

Soooo.... if you have a goal you want to reach, post it here, and let's cheer each other on as we come into week 3!
How goes the struggle?

And how are folks faring with the struggle?

Is the story a joy or a chore?

Are the characters more interesting than you expected they'd be?

Have you kept your themes on track or have the characters run off in theor own directions?

Is the writing of the current novel creating more and better ideas for the next one?

Who ended up choosing the wrong narrator voice or point of view and now feel trapped?

Are you, at this point, despising your story yet or do you think it has merit?

Is it your best one yet?

Are you going to finish?

Anyone here besides me not into video games? And want to meet up?

Hi, all -

So, I've been to two write-ins so far, and the first one was good (at James Bay Serious coffee), but then ended in this awkward time for me where the other two people there started talking a bunch about world of warcraft. Then I went to the Camas one yesterday, and I couldn't concentrate at all and had to leave, because almost everyone there was talking about video games.

I have nothing at all against such conversations, but do not play video games myself, and am not interested in starting. So I felt out of place, and felt like all I could do was listen, and felt like I wasn't breaking through that meeting-new-people-social-barrier-trying-to-find-something-in-common thing.

So, my question is.... does anyone else here want to go to a meet-in where video games aren't the topic of discussion? And if so, what times work well for you?

I'm generally available weekends and evenings.

Love,

eriheila

p.s. I do not mean this as a slight to anyone I met at the write-ins I've attended, and I hope it isn't taken that way.
When good nanos go... sideways

Hi all!

So the evil plague of death (also known as a cold) has kept me from meeting anyone in person thus far this Nano, which is kind of sad because I remember so fondly the crazy meetings we used to have... the ones where we'd talk for hours about what a "harf" looked like, the big ones at the Black Stilt where it seemed like everyone was talking but nobody could hear anything, and where we discovered that there was one person writing about the events leading up to the apocolypse, another writing about the apocolypse itself, and a third writing about the aftermath of the apocolypse... of course they were three different apocolypses, but still - good times. Every once in a while, as I dimly recall, we even wrote stuff. And there was lots of caffeine...

Instead of getting to meet you and distract myself from this monstrosity I am trying to create, I have been shut up in my room and, having lost my voice, I couldn't even *talk* to myself. I just had to think and think and think all week.

And in the meantime, my two MCs, uh, discovered each other. On page 22. Which is at least 60 pages before any kind of love interest was supposed to develop between them. Naughty kids.

So... anyone else's novel going completely sideways, or am I alone in having main characters that have minds (and hormones) of their own?!

Hope you're all having fun - and gettin' it done!

What's your genre? What's your story?

We'll probably talk about this again in the meetings but what's your genre? What is everyone planning to write about this year?

I'm doing fantasy. I managed to make it very hard to find a setting by setting it on the edge of the world in the 'this is where reality starts to break down and nothing can be causally predicted' sort of way. Good fun.
Where in Victoria do you write?

Now that I know there is a diverse group of Wrimos right here in Victoria, I must know: what are the best places in Victoria to write?

For myself, I have found that the public library (the main branch on Broughton) is a fantastic place to write. The second floor is virtually silent, while the first floor is busy enough that you don't feel bad for whispering to a friend, but quiet enough that you can be productive. I have also enjoyed writing in the Cook St. Village Starbucks (though I know Starbucks is not for everyone) as long as I can get one of the nice cushy chairs by the big front window.

How about everyone else? Any favourite writer-friendly hideouts around town?
Noooo! Not NOW! >:(

Well, my computer monitor is pretty much done for. I mean, I'm typing from it now, but the controls are shot. My horizontal center isn't functioning and my screen is off center. I can't see the far right of my screen. Everything's on center up until it gets to the login screen when booting up.

Time for a new monitor or some form of replacement. -sigh- I so do not have the money for this.

Even worse, it's killing my NaNo groove in ways I cannot bear. I can still use my computer, but the screen being messed up is monumentally distracting and I can't get past it. Honestly, the prospect of finishing out nano on my PDA is... not appealing. Or worse... by hand.

Such awful, awful timing.

When Will Josh Finish?

Place your bets, folks....

As those of us who have nano'd in Victoria before know, Josh (also known as Alcar) is Mr. Speedy Gonzales when it comes to Nanos. I can't think of a year since I've been participating when he wasn't the first person to hit 50,000. As of this moment that I'm writing this, his word count is already about 13,000 and change. Yes, that's right, over one-quarter of the way there on the second day. One year he wrote about 100,000 words in 30 days, while the rest of us (ahem, me) resorted to adding complicated and meaningless dream sequences to our novels just to pad the word count!

Soooo, I'm thinking, let's make a friendly wager. Record your best guess for when he finishes this year in this post. Winner gets a prize - something cheap and funny - to be delivered at the post-Nano whatever we do this year.

Personally, I'm going with November 13th.

Any takers?

Kris
Typewriters

Hello out there. Does anyone have, or knows anyone who might have, a manual typewriter they're willing to sell? It has to be manual - like the old Royals - and preferably portable. I figured someone somewhere in town might have one collecting dust or evening out a wonky table table. Thanks.
Those that give up.

Dear Victoria Region,

My dear roommate who has one of the neatest story ideas has thrown in the towel. I worry after her as she was the one who initally introduced me to Nanowrimo. While I am doing well she has yet to write and keep it up. Today she quit halfway in and I am as always lost for words. I am not sure how to talk her into starting again and giving her encouragement. Part of her discouragement is my monsterous word count so quickly, but I explained to her that I don't have as many activities to carry out throughout the day as she.

So I ask you dear writers how might I encourage her back into the game? When I quit last year I felt miserable and resolved not to write again yet her I am. Often if I use this to describe things she simply says that I am me and have a strong will. I am placed much to high on a pedastal and being clumsy with my words I fear hurting her. So please any encouragement that you could give me to give her would be wonderful.

Sincerely,

Ira
Virtual Write-In?

So not everyone is gonna be cool with it, but I thought i'd at least put the invite out there.

Tonight I am going to be live on Stickam, hosting a chat while I work on my NaNo. For those that don't know, Stickam is a webcam community, and you don't have to have a webcam or an account or anything like that. You can just come into a live that is open (and mine will be for that reason)

So feel free to stop by and chat, or watch the crazy internet junkie while she writes or just stay far far away from it.

You can find me here: http://www.stickam.com/tennyodalucia

I'm probably going to do this a lot. Yesterday I was live from the cafe I work at so I could do a write-in with my friend in the Netherlands. It's kind of neat :)
Writing Discussion

I'm writing on a dank, dark island in the middle of the Salish Sea and would love to have online discussions about writing. Getting anywhere in person is pretty much out of the question for me (anywhere besides here, I mean).

I don't seem to have a plot, but am forging ahead, letting my characters interact as seems right to them. This is getting out of hand. We already have one dead puppy, a collapsed house, and a deeply depressed goatherd. I am feeling just a bit of trepidation about tomorrow. What will happen next?

Do any of you write without a clear plot outline?

Discuss.

I'm going to be hanging around late at Serious Coffee in James Bay (103-225 Menzies? I think is the address...it's behind the parliament buildings and before thrifty's) today, assuming it really is wednesday and I haven't forgotten anything important....

I get off work at 4:30 and plan to be here writing (hopefully) for a couple hours most likely. If anyone wants to stop by for coffee or writing, or what have you, I'll be here :) I don't have a sign or anything, I just thought those that wanted to get out to write might like the chance to do so with others!
