Hello, fellow Savannahians! Here be a thread to introduce yourself. :)

I've been living in Savannah since 2001. I used to work at SkIO but got laid off at the end of August. The next job I find probably won't be in Savannah (marine science jobs are rare even when the economy is good), so this might be my last year writing from here. I'm also trying to conserve funds, partly by driving as little as possible, so it's unlikely I'll make it to any in-person meets - but we'll see.

Hello all,

My home has been in Midway (Liberty County) for the past 3 years, but most of that time has been spent on the west coast where I've been working (I used to live in San Diego). Happily, I'm turning around my home/work schedule so I can work from home and visit the west coast to work on occasion.

Last year was my first Nanowrimo. I thought I was crazy then, but what a wonderful time it was! I still feel the thrill of writing my first novel, even though I've done nothing with it since. I found a once/week Write-In very helpful. Work is going to be very busy this October/November, but I'm going to give it a go again this year, too. I am no more prepared this year than I was last year so I plan to be writing by the seat of my pants again.

Good luck to all.

Hey all. ^^

I lived in Canada most of my life but moved to Savannah around two-and-a-half years ago. I'm still in high school so I'm hoping NaNoWriMo will be manageable. It's nice to meet all of you. :)

Hello.

I am in the Army and have lived in Savannah for a year.

I am here for loss #6.

I'm fairly certain that if I were to actually achieve victory, it'd cause the universe to collapse.

I'm waiting until Nano 2012 to do so, so I won't feel as bad.

Hi! Intros always make me feel like I'm part of a 12-step program.

"Hello..my name is Michelle..I am addicted to making up stories and writing them down!!"

My husband and I moved to Savannah in 2005 after he retired from the military. This will be my first NANO and unfortunately it will be the only one from Savannah as my husband has decided to return to college and we will be moving to Athens next spring/summer.

Hi All,
I am an unpublished writer. Looking forward to authorship as my second career.
I just attended the Georgia Romance writers conference in Atlanta. Nothing like

Hey there! I'm Jade, 22, and I just recently moved to Savannah. I used to live in Reno, Nevada and they had a great NaNo community so I can only hope the one here is just as good. I've both participated and won one year so far and I'm hoping to make it a streak. Hope to see you all around, etc.

Just joined this second - OK, minute!
Moved to Beaufort County, SC, 16 months ago, leaving my Southern Maryland NaNos. Not much NaNo-ing here that I can tell, so was checking to see what Sav. does - it's no further than going to Hilton Head or Beaufort. After 20 years outside DC, driving ANYwhere else is a snap!
This will be my fourth year. Won twice, couldn't get the story open in my head last year until the last week when it finally appeared. It would be the trilogy and I can't work it for NaNo this year so will have to beat it off time. But have two mss. with which I have done not much, but am working them slowly just in case there's something there!
But LOVE the thrill of the challenge and find it is really a release for my other "real-world" writing. Opens up the brain cells.
It also keeps my dentists in Cadillacs as I am addicted to Milk Duds, Charleston Chews and Good N Plenty during November - and mugs of tea made by my puzzled but supportive husband.
Haven't a cue what I'll write but did put something into Procrastination Station for the first time, so maybe that will be where I travel!
Schedule may be dicey, but possible - got Borders Books & Music down there or an understanding library?
Good luck and limber up those digits!

Sadly, we don't really have a huge nano community here. Last year we had a few meetings at the Books-a-Million next to Panera's, across from Oglethorpe Mall. And by "meeting" I mean me and one or two other people. At least we didn't disrupt their cafe. ;) The SCAD students tend to get together amongst themselves, I think - and they don't like to venture away from downtown. Which would be fine if there were parking downtown...

Hello, hello.

I'm Lee and this will be my fifth year going for the Gold. (4 tries, 3 wins) Actually the past two years, I've been personally competing against my Mother to see which of us can get over the 50,000 mark first. I'm not exactly a native Savannahian, but I've been here long enough to truly call it home. Looking forward to hopefully getting to hang out with others who go through this torment/pleasure every year.

Hi everyone!

I just moved to Liberty County (Hinesville) in the middle of July from Athens. It was hard to leave the comfort of my college town to start my job in the "real world", but I'm doing okay so far! Savannah is a nice enough town, even if I do have to travel a bit to get there!

This is my second year doing this, and I've been planning my story for months. I'm really hoping it all comes up, because it's such an inspired jumble in my head.

Nice to meet you all, though! ^_^

Hey all-

I'm Julie, and I'm crossing my fingers that this will be the year I actually finish what I set out to do! I live in Richmond Hill and work in Brunswick, so commuting eats up a huge amount of time of my day. If only I could write and drive at the same time.

I hope to see more of you all as November gets closer. And if anyone's interested in meeting up for motivation, perhaps we can organize something.

Hello, Fellow NaNoers!!!

My name is Julie, (hello, other Julie!), and although I'm not a SCAD student, I stick pretty close to downtown too. I've lived here in Savannah for just over three years and LOVE it! This will be my thrid NaNo and I WILL complete it, as I did the other two, come hell or high water.

I'm pretty much a full time writer now, (thanks to a partner with a father who was a careful investor), although I remain unpublished. I've completed one novel and I'm working on the second in the series. I write LONG stories, so the 100,000+ words I've written during the past two NaNos are part of this unfinished second book. I also write poetry, essays and I'm working on a childrens' book.

I'm very eager and excited for this NaNo to start and I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Let's go purple!!!

Hi, I'm Eve. I work as a tour guide downtown, mostly ghost tours. I've done NaNoWriMo twice before, once under a different username. Both times completed, but neither were very good. As in, like, not even workable, rewritable, maybe-this-will-be-good-in-the-third-draft kind of way. This year my goal is to write something with a cohesive plot, something that can be polished and maybe even published.
A little more about my relationship to Savannah-- I grew up in Pembroke, little bitty town about forty-five minutes from here, moved into town with family when I was sixteen, left for school (New York) and finished that as quickly as possible. Came back three years later. Am now working on getting an acting career going (which is going to involve a lot of travel) but I guess you could say Savannah's always going to be where my heart is. In fact, my novel, as it's being planned, is about the city. Sort of. Anybody else writing specifically ABOUT the Hostess City? (I hate that nickname, by the way-- it just reminds me of small artificially-flavored cakes).

Hi Eve,

Good luck. I don't have a premise, story, or plot yet, but I have been thinking of centering my story in Midway, because, well, so much happens here. ;-) (30 words, not bad for a start)

Greetings from the All Powerful Squirrely One!!!!

After listing to the stories of others who were involved with this last year, I just had to try my hand at least once. I've been in Savannah for a couple of years now. Of late, I've been doing mostly screen plays, but it's time to get back to a little novel writing.

Hello,
I am looking for a creative venue to balance my days teaching Tax School!!! I hope we can have a gathering before the 11/1 start date so I know what I am doing. I spend most of my time south of DeRenne but am flexible about a meeting place and love an excuse to go downtown.

Returning for year two!

I'm Lauri, and I was really excited last year when I met my 50K goal and "won" on my first try!

However, I discovered my novel was a much more ambitious project than I thought, and at over 100K words now, it's still not finished!!!

I keep banging away at it, though - I got a great start last year and I honestly think it has potential. It doesn't flat out suck. This year, however, I'm planning on a MUCH SMALLER project that will be closer to finished in 50K words. Let's hear it for downsizing!

I live on Tybee, but don't mind traveling a bit for meet-ups and write-ins. You have to drive to get anywhere when you live on Tybee. I'm used to it.

Returning for year three :-)
2007 - Into The Next Room - WON
2008 - Snow White 1812

My name is Naomi. I moved to Savannah from Portland, Oregon last year. I'm interested in meet-ups and write-ins, especially write-ins. I really enjoyed those events because whenever I felt stuck, participating would inspire me and get me unstuck. I had my first 5k+ word count day during/after a write-in. This year I'm going to allow myself to experiment with form and format and try letting my characters tell the story in different ways that might include multimedia. I have no idea what's going to happen, and that feels like terrifying fun to me.

Here's one of the quotations that will help guide my inspiration for this year's project - Enjoy!
“He was still staring at the torn pieces of paper in the wastepaper basket. He was staring very intently at them as they made friends with the abyss. They seemed to have a life of their own. It was a big decision but they decided to go on without him (from Sombrero Fallout by Richard Brautigan, p. 24).

SCAD kid here. I tried to organize a rather unsuccessful meet-up downtown last year, haha. It seems we don't stick together very well after all? I know startlingly few students intent on NaNoWriMo anyway.

This would be my 7th year for NaNo and honestly, I'm seriously debating skipping out on it. November has historically been a terrible month for me, what with many birthdays to attend to, finals, leaving school for the holidays, and this year, I'll be skipping town for a trip to Tokyo before the end of the month, cutting short my time for NaNo by three or four days. It would be terrible to break a seven year tradition though... even if I've already broken my brief, two-year win streak (2006, 2007).

I'm kind of thinking of reworking/rewriting my 2006 novel actually. Not sure if that counts as cheating, lol, I really haven't looked at it since I finished writing it three years ago, but I'm sure nothing I wrote is salvageable. I've got other ideas too though...

If I do end up taking on year seven, I'd love to try for some write-ins, but I have no reliable means of transport outside the downtown area, so I guess that's pretty unlikely? My schedule isn't very accomodating either. :c Oh, well. Moral support over these forums have suited me well enough in the past!

Kiriska-- I've been pretty much confined to downtown myself for several years, so I hear you. But there should be plenty of places for write-ins-- the Sentient Bean, for one. I'm still mourning the loss of Metro Coffee House (lots of space and tables and dominoes and bubble tea! AAAAGHHH WHYYYYYY!!!!) but there's also Gallery Espresso, Panera Bread (although they're only open 'til 8:00) and all those SCAD buildings, if perhaps a student could work out something to let a bunch of non-SCAD NaNoers in for a write-in? There's Mellow Mushroom, although that can be quite noisy, and Jazz'd Tapas Bar in City Market, although that's kind of expensive and I've only seen it mid-day, so I don't know how crowded it is. Probably the best bet is Sentient Bean. It's fairly spacious, has comfy furniture, and a lot of people come there to write anyway.

International SCAD student here. I found out about NaNoWriMo through a friend about three years ago but this will be my very first try at it! November always tends to be the most hectic month for me but this time around I'm actually motivated to give it a shot. I also actually have some ideas this year.

Hi All,
Amy here. Been in Savannah for just over a year now. Founded and run the area's only boating newspaper, Waterside News. If I know any of you outside of NaNo, please get in touch! Previously of Atlanta, then Ft. Lauderdale before Sav,
Nano history: First year was I think 2003, won. 2006 with new user name, didn't finish. Apparently I'm on a tri-annual role, so I'll see you all again in 2012 when the fellow Savannahian above collapses the universe.
For me, NaNo's a couple things:
1) A deadline set by someone else (meaning I'm less likely to break it!)
2) An opportunity to get back into the habit of writing at least 1,667 words each day, which is the minimum you can skate by on writing daily if you want 50k in 30 days. And after doing this for 30 days, it is truly a habit!
3) Good chance to brainstorm ideas, hash out plot problems, etc. with other writers

I'm up for a meet at some point, but I write between 5 - 8am, so probably wouldn't come for a write in. Also don't mind driving - but parking downtown does stink. Maybe we could subdivide and have a downtown meeting and a "for everyone else" meet? Just a thought.

Happy NaNo All!

Hi all.

I've been in Savannah for about 6 months now, going on 7? Meh. For the most part I work a lot, in the downtown area on Riverstreet, actually. I work mostly night shifts so I'm not sure I'd be able to do a write-in, but I'd like to if given the chance. Give me a date and a weeks notice and I could probably request that day off. Maybe. xD

I've done NaNo a few times but I never quite got there. I didn't have the patience or the discipline at the time, but I do now, as well as a planned out story, which always helps. ~^_^~

I'm online most of the time so don't hesitate to message me if you want to talk. Oh yeah. My name is Bridgette. And as my computer is being hateful, I'll probably be doing a good bit of my NaNo the old fashioned way.

Hi everyone!

This is my first NaNo and I've also somehow talked my 3 teens into joining up for the young writers! (One is a future SCAD Student in the making, as she is very talented in drawing.)

I was born in Savannah and have been here most of my life. I've moved across the river a few times but always came back 'home' to Savannah.

I look forward to this new adventure. Writing has always been my favorite thing to do, and I hope to actually get to 50K by the end of Nov! (hey, I can dream!)

Hello,

I'm Hillary (Or Hil for short) This is my 4th year trying and failing miserably at Nano. I am a Junior at SCAD in the Film and Television department which is why I am in Savannah. When I am not here I live in Texas, right outside of Dallas.

Hey all I'm Robert (and actually IN a 12 step program. Ha so not a whole lot of this intro stuff is new to me).

I hail from California, via Boston, and after 10 years in Savannah (minus a stint in Brunswick and a wonderful crazy stay in Tampa) I have finally come to call this home. That doesn't, however, keep me missing my friends nor the Pacific nor the year round 70+ degree weather.

And I am at such a disadvantage for this contest. The only serious writing I do is in blogs. As if that is not enough of a distraction, I also killed my computer this past year, and have a laptop that will only work when plugged in. To top that off I somehow killed the keyboard and had to plug in a USB keyboard (into a laptop). As a final test of my commitment, the M and the N keys are switched and I haven't taken it apart to fix it (in over a year) so the typos can be really annoying.

And I have yet to develop a plot I want to even work around. But this is the third year in a row I have discovered this contest right around the same time, and the past two years I kicked myself for not making the attempt. I love to read. Anything. Everything. I devour others' words and cannot get enough of them. that drives me to write (technically type nopw, the past ten years at least) whether I get lucky and write something readable or not. I have found a certain meditative zen in writing, in just carrying a sentence into a paragraph into a page into looking at the clock and realizing I have to get ready for work.

So here I am. And I hope, more than anything, above even finishing this project, to encourage and goad and to support and to scream the rest of you across the finish line. I have tremendous respect for all of you right now, those who have done this before and especially anyone who's attempted this before, and a great understanding for all of us who have signed up for the first time (finally) to see what happens.

I look forward to meeting with you soon! Good luck.

Just as a quick sidenote - I've noticed a few people friending me, and I'm flattered you want to be friends :). But the main thing I do with the friends list here is to be able to see lots of people's progress bars in one place. Sadly, our profiles only show 11 of them (the first 11, based on signup date), so I've got various non-local friends on the lists (this account plus a second account that I'm not planning to write on this year). I'm planning to just use this here rollcall thread to track Savannahians. All of which is a longwinded way of saying, please don't be offended if I don't friend you back. It's not that I don't love you, it's just that I'll be keeping track of you through here instead. ;)

HI,

This is my first nano, and I am a little jittery. Usually I write in spurts, and when I force myself to write within a time structure, by the time I'm done, it feels that I will never write again (not my favorite feeling).

I wish everybody the utmost success and look forward to greet you on November 30th!

Happy Writing!
