Hi all,

I just wanted to check in. I'm a newbie here to Nano. This will be my first year (if I go through with it, I still have a month to decide not to!).

I think I'll have plenty of a story to write and explore. Not to mention I have typewriters set up in prime locations in my house, computers at work and home, and I even picked up an old AlphaSmart 3000 off eBay (should be in-hand tomorrow). So, the only excuse I may have is laziness and lack of motivation...but that's where everyone here is going to help, right?

Anyways, I'm deek. I'm a 33 year old male, married with two kids (boy and girl) under 3 years old. And am starting to get filled with a volatile mixture of apprehension and excitement for participating in Nano 2009!

Hi deek. I'm so glad I'm not the only newbie this year. I also have mixed emotions about this challenge, but I think it will be worth it. Even attempting this challenge is admirable, and it's a great achievement if you finish! And if it makes it less scary, you only really need to write 3 1/2- 4 pages a day, depending on font size and margins etc. Sometimes having huge projects can seem terrifying, but if you break it up into little pieces and put it together one piece at a time, it's easier. And having motivation as well as support helps too. See, I'm doing this with my boyfriend, and neither of us like to be proven wrong. The risk of being beaten is enough motivation to get my butt in gear, haha. Good luck to you, and I hope you choose to do this challenge. What could it hurt?

I'm Angela, and this is my second NaNo. (The first was unsuccessful, sad to say.)

Having other people involved in NaNo around definitely helps. I spent all last November living from word war to word war.

I'm attempting my second year at NaNoWriMo (first time was 2 years ago, and I finished!). I'm less confident in my ability to finish this year. I'm homeschooling now, I'll have one weekend reenactment in Nov, which assures 0 word count for those days, and I'm pregnant, so things are definitely busier this time around. I'm kind of a perfectionist in this particular area, so I'd rather not try at all if I can't win, but when the time comes, I know I'll start right in and hope for the best.

I'm really hoping that after November, I will have sufficiently conditioned myself to continue righting. Maybe not 50,000 every month, but something. And then, come this time each year, it will be more of a fun thing to do then dreading it all...

I'm Chris here in Fort Wayne. I go to IPFW so if anyone else goes there let me know!

This is my second Nano, I won last year and plan to win this year. I was surprised at how fast the month goes, just keep your daily word count and your done before you know it.

Let me know how the AlphaSmart works for you. I think they're neat little devices, but I don't think I could never use one. If yours has a calculator, try entering "40 + 2" and see what you get. :P

Yeah, I heard about that, but after I got it and updated it to the lastest firmware, I didn't install the calculator...didn't need extra distractions:)

I'll let you know. For me, it fills a nice little gap. I'm not much for handwriting, so having a device that I can pull out to write for 30 minutes on my lunch break or when I am stuck somewhere waiting, really helps to utilize my time. Which, as a father of two, working 8-5 weekdays, is a big plus!

I've heard some people get a netbook for that. You don't really get the drastiction free with the netbook though. I write on my Mac Book with a program that blacks out the screen so I can have the distraction free type experiance. The biggest issue I think I'd have with that device is the tiny screen. I don't know that I could write without being able to read the entire paragrah on the screen.

Since editing is kinda bad during nanno, the tiny screen might actually be a benifit.

Hello there everyone, my name is Heather and I am currently attending IPFW and working.. so.. that officially means I am doomed, yes. This will be my fourth year doing Nano Wrimo and hopefully my fourth win. Fingers are being crossed. It was a close call last year.

Heyo, I'm Steve and I'm from down in Portland (so far this is the only thread remotely close to my middle-of-nowhere home). It's my seventh year and I'm still going at it. Repeated failures haven't been enough to beat me down yet. Somehow I just can't resist the draw of WriMo. Best of luck to you all!

Hello! Second time nano writer here. Didn't finish my first year, which is sad, I know. I like to think it has to do with the fact that I had a lot going on in my life (first year teacher, getting married, PROCRASTINATOR), so this year, I am proud to say that I am trying nano again, and this year, the biggest distraction involves being unemployed. Whoopee!

I will keep all of you updated on just how hard nano can be even when you don't have a full time job and life. I'm proud of every single one of you for trying this, and I hope we all finish!

I'd like to second the confetti throwing and the excitement/dread we are all experiencing!!

Jenni

Greetings. I had heard of NaNoWriMo a couple of years ago. This is my first committed try. Years previously I was working on finishing my master's, but now the only thing holding me back is work and family time. I had almost forgotten it was coming up until a friend of mine reminded me of it and I thought, "hey, I don't have any real excuses this year." It will be tough to do this because I can't get away from the urge to rewrite a chapter (once I have one done) and then rewrite it over and over again. After finishing my master's last year, I've been wanting to write but just couldn't get myself to do it (my final paper was a 38 pager). So it's been about a year since I've dedicated myself to writing any fiction. But I've had an idea (or two or three) recently for a new bit of writing and I'm going to do it through WriMo. Good luck to us all!

Hey everyone!

I am just wondering if there will be any write-ins for Ft. Wayne Wrimos? I am willing to put one together, but I need to know everyone's schedule in order for that to happen!

*edit So if everyone could reply with one day and a block of time that they would be willing to devote to a write-in, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hello all, this is my third Nanowrimo. The first time I tried it I managed just over 10k words. Last year I was able to complete my story and it was incredibly rewarding. This year will be particularly challenging because work will be exceptionally busy as we prepare for the holiday season. I'm going in blind with no storyline but I think I'm going to give it a shot anyway.

I would be willing to get together in Fort Wayne if there is a group that would like to do a write-in. Just let me know and I'll try to be there.

Good luck to all.

Hello! This is my fourth Nano, but I only managed to sucessfully complete the first one. For some reason, it was a lot easier when I was in grad school... and not working full time yet! But I hope I'll be able to turn things around this year.

Ok,

Based on the replies to all threads in our area, Ripter and I have decided on some times. All meetup and write-ins will be posted publicly via the ML as well as on the Ft. Wayne Meetups/Write-Ins & the IPFW Writers thread.

Here are the scheduled meetups and write-ins thus far in Ft. Wayne:

Location:

Barnes & Noble- Jefferson Pt Location
4140 W. Jefferson Blvd. Bldg. J
Ft. Wayne, IN 46804

Meetup- Saturday, October 31st 10:00-11:30 am (Costumes optional!)*

Write-In- Friday, November 6th 6:00-7:30 pm*

Write-In Saturday, November 7th 10:00-11:30 am*

Like I said, all will be at B&N, probably in the cafe, closest to the coffee. =) There will be a sign on one of the tables that says in big letters, "WRITE-IN"

Thanks, and we hope to see you all there!

*Meetup times are extremely flexible. Come anytime and leave whenever you want. The times above are the guaranteed times when either Ripter or I will be there.

Well, for the 31st Write-In I won't be able to make it because I'll be down at Ball State for the weekend. The Saturday Meetups are usually difficult for me because I ocassionally work Saturday mornings.. HOWEVER.. I can usually make the Friday evening meet-ups.

Just putting this out there and I'm not sure if people would would to, but my boss at work has said that if we wish to hold any meet-ups where I work it would be a-ok. I work in an Independant Bookstore in Covington Plaza down the street from Jefferson Pointe. Maybe not for a write-in where people may come and go, but we have a nicer seating area where meeting can be held that might be a little bigger than a cafe.

If anyone wanted to do this just shoot me a message so I can double clear it with my boss which shouldn't be a problem at all. A bunch of booknerds going into the store.. yeah, I don't see issues. =P

Good luck everyone! One week until D-day.

Do you mean The Book Rack? Or Books, Comics and Things? Either way, a different meetup location would be stellar! I am in, and I am sure others will like that too. Let me know what day/time you decide!

Just a reminder to all those coming to the meet-up tomorrow:

We will be gathering in the cafe at 10am. I will hopefully have a sign standing on a table, with several other tables pulled together so everyone can sit in the same area.

Goals of the meet-up are pretty basic: meet and greet other area Wrimos and talk about our novels, of course! Bring a friend who is willing to take the plunge with you, or who will just be part of your support system! I cannot promise any free food or drink, but there is a lovely array of coffee and goodies offered for purchase in the cafe. =)

Hope to see you there, and if you have any last minute questions, nanomail me and I will try to answer in a timely fashion!

Again, costumes are encouraged, but not required! Dress as your favorite writer or character, or just be yourself!

Until tomorrow,

Jenni

Hi all!

I will be hosting write-ins at the Pontiac Branch of the Allen County Public Library (the Hanna-Creighton campus, next to the Urban League) each Saturday of the month from 10-noon and 3-6 pm. Laptops (about 12?) will be provided. Please join us! We'll meet in the meeting room! For more info, give me a call at 421-1350.

Hello everyone! I hope that all is going well and you all have some coffee brewing! The book store I was talking about is Mitchell Books. I will talk with my boss on Wednesday to see if there is any day that it can't happen. Anyone who would like to go in there and write is very much welcome, honestly we have mighty comfy chairs and a reading area with tons of tables and chairs and free wi-fi if you have your own laptop. =)

Any issues bringing a typewriter to a local meetup? Yeah, I'm one of "those" Typewriter Bridage loons...

Hey deek,

Typewriters are welcome at the B&N write-ins, as long as you are alright with carrying it! I thought you were using the Alphasmart, though? We had a whole bunch of tables last week with plenty of space! Check the meetup page and the ML main page for write-in times. Hope to see you there!

Yeah, the Alphasmart was my plan for writing at work, but I've been swamped testing a new release. So, my writing has been isolated to mornings before work and at night after the kids go to bed. And since I have several typewriters I love writing on, if I am home, I'm going to be using a typewriter!
