Hello everyone! Here is a thread to post contact info and introductions, so we can all get to know each other a little better and have a reference for later down the line when write ins get into full swing.

As for my information, feel free to contact me about anything and everything -- NaNo questions, write in calendar requests, or just to say hi.

Stuff about me and my novel:
This is my 6th year doing NaNo, 2nd year MLing, and hopefully it will be my 4th win. Maybe I'll even write an ending this time.

This year's novel is going to be a campy scifi about a group of rugged, out-cast vigilantes beating the crud out of space zombies. Probably. I guess we'll see once November actually rolls around.

Other things you don't need to know about me: My favorite color is red, I drink too many energy drinks and I'm addicted to NCIS and food shows on the Travel Channel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now your turn! Share as much or as little about yourself as you'd like. The basic format to get you started:
Stuff about me and my novel: This is my 3rd NaNo and hopefully my 2nd win. I have a 3 year old so we'll see how much he lets me get done. (I also have a wonderful husband and a great nanny/manny team so I might make it again.)
This year's novel is going to be one of three stories:
The one that's been rattling in my head for more than 30 years - a dual world fantasy about 2 sisters separated at birth.
The one that's been rattling in my head for about 3 years - a world within a world YA fantasy about humans and fairies/Elves
The one that I haven't thought of yet that will come storming out of my head like the last two NaNos. :-)
Other things you don't need to know about me: My favorite color depends on the day - either red or blue; I love mochas - specifically Starbucks mochas, and I am working on the edits for last years book - just got some from one of my readers and they weren't too bad so now I know this can be done! Whee!
Next?
IM: coerciblepumpkin on anything I'm on. Just Yahoo, I think. If people are prevalent (however I'm supposed to spell that) on something else I'll load it.
This years novel is leaning towards mystery/romance sort of thing. I've never writen mystery before, but a read a fair amount of it. I have the who/what/when/where/why/how down. Just not sure about the structure and such.
Anyway...stuff about me...this is my...fourth year as an ML? Second in this region. I'm married with a two-year old terror...who drew on the wall in crayon this week while mommy was passed out on the couch sick. Yay. Favorite color changes all the time...and I need to go now, my child is stripping.
Stuff about me and my novel: This is my first year for everything NaNo related, so I have high hopes and still very naive about the entire experience. Except, can you actually be naive if you know you are being naive?
I plan on making my novel a fantasy-esque adventure that focuses more on the characters than the events. It is something that has been going through countless revisions in my mind for the past 7 to 8 years at least. Kept putting off writing it because I thought it could be better, so now I found a group that can help force me to get it down.
If I can get the entirety of it down I have a very good friend already waiting to read and help me edit it (and he is very good at editing) so I have a lot of motivation to get well more than 50,000 words.
Well here goes something...
Stuff about me and my novel: I'm a first timer to this contest, and this is hopefully giving me a kick in the ass to get to writing instead of just talking about it. I'm deathly afraid of the month of November now, but excited too. I always wanted to write and would just sit down with an idea and get stuck after about 10 pages. Now I need to outline and make sure I have chapters structured out so I can just sit and write and know where I'm going this time. I'm really hoping this contest gives me the discipline to do things the right way. Wow, I almost typed "the write way"... how terrible a play on words would that have been...ick.
My novel takes place in the Wildwoods, NJ, a south Jersey island I have attachments to as a kid and returned after 8 years this summer. Sitting outside my motel with my netbook watching the place come alive at night made me realize it's a great place to tell a story.
The story itself... let's see if I can get the synopsis down... A school teacher, haunted by recent dreams of memories, returns to the shore town of his youth searching for a past summer romance. While there, he uncovers a string of mysterious murders that shake this once-serene island.
Stuff about me and my novel:
I am probably the old fogie of the group at 58, soon 59. I live with my wife and our 5-year-old, soon 6-year-old, bunny. He is a German Lop named Zoey. I have NaNo-ed the last three years. I have three novels, two on the market and one that, hopefully, will be released before Sunday, 01 November, 2009. These books are my three NaNoNovels. I am looking for this year to provide my fourth novel.
As for a plot, if you can't tell what will win, look at what will lose and play the opposite. Just remember that winning isn't all it's cracked up to be. The main character of the novel the other main character is writing learns this through experience. The noveling main character learns this vicariously through the main character of his novel. So much for becoming a whiz kid at roulette. Life is better just being content where you are.
I am hosting the Saturday Ballston Mall Write-Ins. I am, as well, thinking of hosting a strictly unofficial start up gathering at Ballston Mall on Friday, 30 October. Send me a Courriel if you have any good ideas about it. The few mandatories are that it start sometime at or after 5:00 PM and that it be at Ballston Common Mall. If those mandatories cause you heartburn, you're welcomed to plan something more suitable, or take part in the Official Kick-Off Party that will be announced by the ML's. I ain't the only game in town, just the grumpiest, most set in my ways one. Hey, ... I'm 58. I've earned that privilege.
Having said that, ...
ALL ARE *STRONGLY* ENCOURAGED TO GO TO THE OFFICIAL KICK-OFF PARTY! ! !
My thing is just an old fogie griping about having to get up early for work on Monday.
So, IGNORE ME AND DO THINGS WRITE (Sorry, I couldn't resist)! ! ! GO TO THE OFFICIAL PARTY! ! !
Other info about me, writing, living, &c is fodder for getting to know me better. So enjoy.
Stuff about me and my novel: This is my seventh year. I've won twice, but like Kristin, I have trouble with endings. I edited my 2006 NaNo over the summer and started sending queries out.
Every year I like to try something different so this one is about weddings and relationships and other stuff I don't know much about.
My kids will start off writing as well. I have a feeling by the middle of the month they'll be more interested in what they can get at the food court than their stories, but at least they'll give it a try.
Irrelevant info: On the second of Nov. I'm going to audition for a play for the first time since high school. I hate cilantro. I'm really afraid of ghosts but helped my friend for three hours to tweak his NaNo idea of ghosts taking over the world only to have him think of something completely different two days later. Figures.
Stuff about me and my novel:
This is my first year doing NanoWriMo and I am super excited! I've been working on plot and character development for a novel for the past several months and was really happy to come across NaNoWriMo - the perfect kick in the rear I needed to make writing a daily habit. The novel will be a Love vs. Science/ Nature vs. Technology sort of thing. There will be quantum physics. And nukes. And mountain-top vistas. And love. I have so many ideas that I'm frequently paralyzed by the thought of tackling the thing. Hooray for crazy writing contests!
Also, I have a day job but really want to be a writer. I'm into Russia and Russian literature, nuclear nonproliferation, doggies, and the pursuit of happiness. My dream vacation is to the Galapagos Islands. I love seasonal beverages.
The end!
Stuff about me and my novel:
This is my first year doing NaNo, and my husband is very excited about "gettin' it on with a novelist" on December 1! I've got 3 kids, including a two-month old. Last night I intended to go to a write-in, but had to take my toddler to the ER (don't worry, she's fine!). I have a feeling that life/NaNo balance will be very hard to achieve!
Novel will be about a sexy mother of 3 who takes her toddler to the ER... No, wait.... Novel will be about a suburban mom who is taken hostage and is thrust into the limelight along with the other survivors of the ordeal. Bulk of the story will be about how she and her fellow survivor adjust once they're back home safe and sound. I'm hoping to write half the novel from the point of view of a nosey neighbor, but getting 50K words out of that might be tough.
I am hugely excited about this challenge. Can't wait to get to know y'all.
About me: I graduated from college a few years ago and am hoping this is the kick in the pants I need to get my bum in gear and stop being such a waste of space.
. . . and my novel: Last year I did nano unofficially and "finished" a draft of something thats been bouncing around my head since 7th grade. This year is my first and I'm writing about god. That is to say, all of them. So what happens when all/most of the gods from all the major/minor religions get together and decide to create the known universe? Hilarity ensues (I hope.) Not quite sure how this will spawn 50k, but that's what november is for, right?
Other useless information about me: I'm ambidextrous. I haven't eaten a banana since 4th grade. My birthday is the anniversary of the day Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of NoVa to General Grant. My idea of a lazy rainy afternoon consists of hot tea/coffee, a big sqishy chair, and a thick book of dragons or dead civil war generals. But really, they're kind of the same, right?
Stuff about me and my novel: This will be my third year doing and winning NaNo.{Note positive attitude! :-) }
I'm a mom of three boys, two are taller than I am at this point, though they're still teenagers (I'm 5'7"). I'm actually from this crazy area, never left, total glutton for punishment. I write fantasy, paranormal, some romance...well, I read a lot of romance, not to good on the writing of it, but I'm working on it. :-) Haven't managed to publish yet, though I do have a few novels I'm trying to get published. I like cars, old, new, shiny, not, fast, slow. Okay, maybe not so much on the slow ones, but you get the idea. I bake a mean chocolate chip cookie, I crochet when stressed (or when trying to finish an afghan for my youngest son), I like to go camping on occasion. I LOVE baseball. Don't care who is playing, don't care who wins, just love the game! (In fact, will be leaving soon to help at my youngest son's game and scorekeep during the game.)
I have no idea what I'm writing this year. I did an outline for a novel last year, but when November 1 rolled around something else demanded to be written. Will probably be something urban fantasy or paranormal (Paranormal = vampires, werewolves, etc,)
I'll be at the Fairfax Starbucks from about 9 or 10 am til 1 or 2 pm on Friday's through Oct. Then every weekday when Fairfax County school's are open. I may actually make it there on other days but I won't know until the actual day. We try to sit at the top of the stairs, where there's an outlet (and we bring extra power strips in Nov) Stop by and say hello. Evenings are difficult, the family demands kind of make evening meet ups nearly impossible.
Stuff about me and my novel:
This year I'm writing a "collective novel" with my friend Christina (limpetfan on the forums). I know what you might be thinking... collective writing is not allowed and the flying monkeys are going to come kick your a$$. But it's not that kind of collective novel. We've picked a plot, characters, and basic setting and are doing a little experiment on the divergence of the creative mind. The only thing collective about our novel is that we're writing the same novel, independently, on purpose. So, in the end there will hopefully be 100,000 words of two novels about the same thing with the same characters.
To make things easy on us, we chose to base our novel on the song "Bartender Song" by Rehab. The band was kind enough to produce a plot for us... beginning, middle, end with enough plot bunnies to keep everyone going till the end of time, as well as some pretty solid characters. We've been experimenting with expanding some points that we want to make sure are included an shoring up the characters.
Both of us will be blogging about this adventure. I'm at: http://nanowrimo.whinteyclaire.com and she's at: http://limpetfan.betelgeuseorbust.com. Feel free to follow along, or just ignore us completely!
Irrelevant stuff about me:
This is my 3rd year participating in NaNoWriMo, and hopefully my 3rd year winning. I don't drink caffeine at all except during the month of November and I usually OD sometime around November 5th and have to have my acupuncturist fix me. He likes this because it gives him extra $$$! I'm married and my husband swears that I must be having an affair with my copy of "No Plot? No Problem!" and says that Chris Baty is my 2nd husband who I forsake him for during November. He thinks that he gets to be a bachelor while I'm writing my novel. And to be honest, as long as it doesn't impact my word count... however! ;-) (j/k)
This year is going to be a challenge since it will be the first time that I'm participating in NaNo that I'm going to be trying to hold down two jobs AND do class at the same time. Hopefully I'll find some way to kick my butt in gear and get that word count done in the free time. It might mean 0 hours of sleep for the month of November, but I'm going to do it!
Stuff about me and my novel: I am deciding whether to continue my story from last year (I won but did not "finish" the story) or do something completely different. My '08 Nano was 9 stories about 9 different women with identity issues, and all the stories linked together, but could also stand alone. I suppose it was lit fic. I could definitely continue all 9 stories, so I have an urge to finish them through this year's Nano. BUT I also have the urge to try my hand at fantasy! But I'm scared b/c I don't actually have any plot or character ideas...we shall see. I had SO MUCH fun doing it last year, I'm really excited about doing it again, even if I don't know exactly what I'll be writing yet!
In my non-noveling time I am a designer and sewer of clothing and accessories. I really feel like noveling has helped me in my other creative endeavors!
Sarah,
I have learned through experience that when I ask if someone is interested in something, I get little or no response. I have found out, however, that if nothing posted seems to be appropriate for me, I can host my own things at times and locations that are convenient to me and reasonably accessible to others, and others will do three things:
1. A portion will complain that I am not being sensitive to them and their times and locations.
2. A tiny portion will offer helpful suggestions that are worth taking into serious consideration.
3. A portion will show up.
If you have the time, you might like viewing the movie "Field of Dreams" starring Kevin Costner. It is an interesting film.
After you have thought it through and are left perplexed by what it has to do with noveling, consider the statement:
"If you host it, they will come."
It might not be this year. It might not be next year. BUT remember. "If you host it, they will come!"
In the film it seems to take a long time from when the Kevin Costner character completes his "Field of Dreams" until the crowds start coming. BUT come they do!
As for hosting a write-in, I have found it to be a piece of cake. You find a nice convenient location where the management probably won't kick you out (a Mall Food Court, the Juke Box Diner, a Panera Bread, a Starbucks, some other little hole in the wall place, &c), you decide when you will force yourself to be there regardless of whatever else happens in your life, you post it to the Regional Forum, and you show up like you committed yourself to doing. Then you show up like you committed yourself to doing, and if others show up, FANTASTIC! If they don't, write your little heart out anyway. The main purpose of a write-in is to increase your word count. You can do that whether others are there to help you or not.
Having others show up, however, makes the experience FANTASTIC. The problem is you can't control others. So, you make the most of the situation. Just remember. "If you host it, they will come!"
Stuff about me and my novel:
I don't have an outline yet, but I'm planning to write a science fiction book, specifically, a Stargate SG1 novel. I'm still trying to hammer out a plot, but I haven't gotten very far with it.
I did NaNoWriMo last year, working on a comic novel that would probably be classified as ChickLit, though I hate the term. I made it to only 16,000 words, because November is a really lousy month for this. But I am a recovering Sweet Valley High author, so I know I can write a novel in a month; I've done it many times. Typically, a series like SVH allows you somewhere from 4 to 6 weeks to turn in your manuscript. That said, I'm still not sure I'm going to be able to manage it this time. As the mom of a second-grader, I can write only during school hours, so any month that includes school vacation days is a rough one for writing. Not to mention all the usual preparation that Thanksgiving involves.
Still, if I manage even to equal my paltry 16,000 words from last year, I'll have 16,000 more words than I have now.
In my professional life, I'm, well, an author. I write fiction and nonfiction books, mostly for children and teens. Since my son's birth, I had switched from fiction to nonfiction, because it's easier for me to write in shorter blocks of time. But I'm ready to move back into fiction, and I'm hoping that NaNoWriMo will help me jumpstart the process.
Stuff about me and my novel: I'm afraid I am quite the novice for NaNo, this being my very first year even attempting the event. I've been planning a story for quite a few years now, and hopefully NaNo will be just what I need to finally put it to ink. My only concern is a solid character personality, especially for the protagonist. I fear that I wish to do far too much with the protagonist's personality that in the end he will become a jumble of hogwash. But the plot itself is fantasy based in a world with two races battling each other for dominance. Ironically, the stronger of the two (at least in technology) were once part of the other race long ago, but documents of such significant changes were long lost and forgotten. The protagonist is of one race but fights on the side of the other due to a rebellion several years prior that flipped his world upside down. It already sounds like an ultimate bore, doesn't it? Anyways, I would love to hear ideas, opinions, and suggestions from others, especially past contenders.
As for myself, I am currently taking a year off from college to hunt for a better school to transfer to. My interests lie in languages and cultures, specialty being Chinese. I did attempt Russian but I'm afraid the girly and manly sorting of words scared me off. (Words weren't meant to have genders!) Other than that I enjoy sewing my own strange designs and ideas, along with crazy designs I find from video games and google images that catch my eye. ... And I like Scifi's Syfy's series Eureka. But alas, the next season won't be for a while. :(
I'm interested in attending one of the write-ins near by to see what it's like. Though knowing my short attention span, it may be more of a hindrance than a help. But it never hurt to try. Good luck in November everyone!
Stuff about me and my novel: I'm 29 and this is my second year doing Nano. I managed to win last year before my birthday on the 27 and I hope to do the same this year--if not well, notepads are good on planes for getting your word count up! My novel this year is tentatively a fantasy novel about a cat named midnight that picks a minor young noble lady to overthrow the current King. The cat is magical, sort of a familiar and teacher, but is also testing the young woman to see if she is worthy of the thrown. Or I might go write my scifi mystery novel, it depends on if I can get anything plot outlined in the next few weeks...
Stuff about me and my novel:
I was a writing major back in college (graduated in 05). However since then have had difficulty writing anything at all. Since then I have changed my career (just graduated as a physical therapist assistant), and working full time, studying for my state license to practice physical therapy, and desperately trying to get my creativity back by participating in Nano. I am a "newbie", this is my first time doing this.
My story is kinda fantasy...About a creature born of the earth taking in a human newborn, and then forcing a woman from another warring country to breast feed the baby, so he (its a boy) doesn't die. The woman is not allowed to ever speak to the child, and even when she is allowed to leave, she wants to eventually use the boy and the powers he is learning from the creature to aid her country in the war.
Some things to know about me: I like anime, tend to overthink myself into a rut, and can't wait till november!
Stuff about me and my novel:
About me: I have done NaNo for three years now (even though my profile only shows one), and won last year. I know enough about computers to get me in trouble. I love books and writing so much, I work in a library but sadly get little time to read. Between writing, sewing Renaissance noble's garb (I'm on cast at the Virginia Renaissance Faire), Girl Scout training and my family (three twenty-somethings, two rescue dogs and a husband), I have little time left to read. I like to write sf/f with an emphasis on the characters, but also write and have published erotica under a psuedonym.
About my novel:
I'm not yet decided between the sequel to my e-published first novel, "Shadow Domes", or the sequel to the one I just finished,"Dragon Hunt", or another totally unrelated story about dragons.
Other miscellay: my favorite colors are forest green and lavender; I collect dragons (pictures, figurines, etc as long at they aren't the mindless firebreathing monster stereotype); I love to watch NCIS, CSI and Criminal Minds, but only on dvdr or the computer where the commercials or minimal.
Stuff about me and my novel: I think this will be year 4 for me. I finished the first year; the second year, I olnly managed 25k (curse you bioware and your electronic crack) and the third year I barely got to 10k, so this year I'm hoping to reverse the trend.
My book this year is a modern day fish-out-of-water story involving a witch.
Other things you don't need to know about me: I make homebrew. I applied for the Evil League of Evil as the Benevolent, yet Iron Fisted Dictator and my novel "Without a Title" is on sale at amazon
Stuff about me and my novel:
Hello,
This is my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I've contemplated participating in the past, but life and total lack of creativity interfered. This is the first year it feels like it's all coming together. I have a story I'm excited about, no loved ones are descending upon me for Thanksgiving, and Nordstrom was kind enough to send me the perfect survival kit box in the mail (along with some cosmetics). Thanks Nordstrom!
My novel is going to be a blatant rip-off homage to Pride and Prejudice, with a twist or two. I'm keeping the twists to myself for now, because I'm not entirely sure how, or even if, they're going to work. I am an editor by profession, so I'm looking forward to keeping my inner editor locked up in the office, rather than letting her come home with me every day.
Stuff about me and my novel:
This is my first year writing and I'm a little excited. I'm 22 and just graduated from college in May (BS Theatre) and I am very unemployed. I started writing nonsense a couple of weeks ago just because and now trying a novel in thirty days.
Got a very interesting superhero story planned out from the Adoption Center. Superheroes and Villains are commercialized, the Villains do little evil and are deftly defeated by the Heroes. Then it's Millertime. Except some real Heroes come to town (because they think the local heroes royally suck at their job) and proceed to kill a villain. The heroes and villains band together to fight for their way of life. Unknown to them one of the villains really is evil, and there is a problem with evil friends...
Stuff about me and my novel:
This is my third Nano sign-up, but I've never completed *sob*. Maybe this will be the year for me! I plan to try horror this year. I've never written horror, so it will be a stretch for me. I usually write fantasy. The basic plot of the novel is: an evil anima or "demon" is caused to coalesce in 1918 by an Armenian shaman - - a nominal Christian who is angered by the massacre of Armenian Christians 1915-17 and wants revenge. After the anima is formed, but before it can be directed, the shaman is killed. The evil force goes dormant for fifty years, but in 1968 the actions of a particular family cause it to be released. Gore ensues.
I'm older than most of the people doing NaNo, and I feel uncomfortable at the write-ins with all those young 'uns, so you probably won't see me unless some people over 35 promise to show up.
Stuff about me and my novel:
This is also my third year of trying Nano. I, sadly, have not been able to complete each year because the flu devil had gripped me for two years straight and pneumonia followed on the third year. I have however completed the manuscript from one of those years and am almost finished with the other two.
I am a stay-at-home mother of three. I would like to get together for a write-in but have been a little shy with doing that as well for fear of being over the age of 35. I'll be forty, a young forty but still forty this year. LOL
I write paranormal romances, urban fantasies and have been working on a historical piece as well.
I just went to my first Romance Writers of America conference because it was here in DC and my writing bug has taken over me again.
Hopefully I'll be able to stay healthy this Nano and finish my novel, another paranormal piece based in the Utah desert. I spent some time there this year and fell in love with the scenery and a great scenario developed in my head.
We are wrimos of all ages! I've met folks from 15 to 50, and surprisingly enough, everyone seems to be on the same mental wave length, regardless of age. It must be all the caffeine ;)
And I would love to go to a Romance Writers of America conference, so I am very jealous.
Stuff about me and my novel:
I'm a really slooooow writer. I've done NaNoWriMo twice. Both times I didn't win, but did write exponentially more words than I usually do in a month. This year, with the help of Write or Die, I plan to WIN!
I'm going to try my hand at a humorous romance between a vampire who gets a job at a blood bank with the intention of embezzling from his employer, and the nurse who's in charge of the blood bank.
Stuff about me and my novel:
Hi! I actually live in Harrisonburg, but I'll be visiting my parents in Falls Church for Thanksgiving, and I will probably need to go out to a write-in or two if I hope to survive that kind of excitement. I'm a college student down here, in Art History and French. This will be my fourth year NaNoing and second year as a POC.
About my novel... It's my policy to not think about it until halfway through October, so as to prevent over-planning. I had an idea earlier (time travel and the Napoleonic Wars) which means I've thought about it too much already.
Happy plotting to everyone who does!
-Kate
