Hi Everyone!

I'm a new writer in the Lethbridge area, having come down from Edmonton. I've been doing this since 2002 and have a blast every year. I'm curious if there are any other writers in the Lethbridge area interested in getting together for plot planning, write-ins, procrastination, etc.

Maybe we can talk Denton (the ML from Medicine Hat) into coming out.

It's not that far a drive at all, choppy! Besides, Lethbridge has a Toys R Us, while Medicine Hat doesn't. There's all sorts of reasons for a Hatter to head out for a visit!

Hi, I'm Cinette, and I reside in the Lethbridge area. This is my second year in NaNo. I did spendidly in the first week, but fell flat after that.
My biggest challenge as a writer...gee, where do I start? I guess it would have to be my remarkable ability to be consistently inconsistent. I'll write like gangbusters for weeks on end, then not touch any of it for months. I need to get an outline going...heck, I need to get an idea for this year's project.
As for the two am snack? I haven't seen two am in years. I turned 40 this year, I'm too old to stay up that late.

I guess I posted that last comment in the wrong forum. Oops. Sorry, I'm a first timer. I was too shy to try the forums last year. Anyway, writing get togethers sound like a good idea, count me in. I'm all about procrastination.

Hi!

I'm a Lethbridge writer, too. I'm working hard right now on the edits to my nanowrimo novel from last year.

I'd love to see an actual Lethbridge meet-up. Normally it's just Aquadeo and me. :)

Does anyone have any ideas for venues? Being new to the city, I don't have much of a feeling for good writing/social nooks yet. I was thinking we could aim to have a plot-planning get-together in a few weeks if people are interested.

Capital idea, choppy! Let's see... how does Friday the 23rd sound for a plot-planning get-together? (I suggest this selfishly, since I'll be busy on the 24th.) I do like the Penny Coffee House on 5th Avenue, but I'm open to suggestions. If we decide on a date and time, I can put it up on the calendar in the header.

A stress-free evening of throwing crazy plot ideas back and forth can really inspire and energize a writer... and I really need to do some advance plotting for my novel this year. I'm really looking forward to this!

I hail from Lethbridge as well. Well, technically not in Lethbridge, but close enough to say that. Last year I let the winter get to me and gave up 2 weeks in. Luckily, after a week of nothing, I got kicked in the butt by fellow nano-ers and was about 50 words away from my goal by the end of November. Hopefully this year the butt-kicking shall happen sooner, as I have set my goal even higher this year! Anyway, the point of that is, I shall try my best to make it to any Lethbridgian events in the hopes of said butt-kicking! I have sadly been more busy and thus had less planning time, so a planning night might be quiet useful for me.

Well, I can do Friday the 23rd. I don't know of any other venues, so I suggest we take Aquadeo's suggestion.

Shall we try for 19:00?

Hi,

i'm in lethbridge as well! I can come and join in anywhere I can get by public transport, if people can tell me where to find wherever we're meeting up (sorry, i'm still Lethbridge-challenged in terms of navigation. )

And I can do the 23rd!

Debbie

All right, I've put it on the main calendar (can everyone see it?). We'll be meeting at the Penny Coffee House, which is right downtown on 5th street, just a few blocks south of the train tracks. Accessible by bus routes 12,14,20,21, and 22. Party starts at 19h00, but I'll be there a bit earlier, just out of paranoia. : ) Look for a table with a stuffed dinosaur, and a NaNoWriMo sign.

I hope to see you there!

Are newbies welcome? I noticed that you are all over 20 and have done NaNoWriMo for a couple years already. My friend and I are doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year, and we're both 15. We are really getting into this, and we would love to meet some peeps that do this/have done it already in our area <3

Absolutely newbies are welcome. I would also extend the invitation to people who aren't sure yet whether they want to participate this year, but who may have been lurking around the forums thinking about it.

Parents and siblings are welcome to attend as well, especially for any younger people interested in coming out. I don't know what the age distribution of participants will be like.

Indeed! It's always great to meet new people, and since everyone's going to be starting a new novel, previous experience doesn't count for much. Both you and your friend are more than welcome!

So, that's about 5-6 people for the 23rd so far? Wonderful! Everyone's invited, but if you haven't said anything yet, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know - that way, we can inform the Penny in advance if we'll need to move some tables around.

I'm planning on attending Friday, too.

What time does the Penny close?

I'm close to Lethbridge -- in Coaldale, actually (Lethbridge's unofficial suburb), and have yet to do any 'group meet' thing. And as much as I enjoy The Penny (which is open until 9 PM), I'm afraid I'll have to pass on the group meeting. My husband and I have had a busy week, and I'm very much looking forward to a night out with him! If we end up at The Penny for a bite to eat, I'll at least pop over and say hello. If I don't chicken out, that is. (I tend to be shy around people I don't really know too well).

How's that for not making a commitment? %-P But if there are other get-togethers, I'll do my best to make it work! I find having fellow writers to be accountable to helps me a lot during NaNoWriMo. :)

It's okay to be shy. Feel free to just stop in for a coffee or hot chocolate or whatever and check us out.

I still have a massive lack of plot, so I'll be interested in doing some brainstorming tonight. And I'm always curious to hear about what other people have chosen to do.

Ok I'll be bringing the babylaptop and arriving early - I'm coming pretty much out of work so I should be there by 6-630 as I need to pick up some food on the way (I'm celiac - If Penny's has something I'll take that but if not I need to scrounge. ) I'm recogniseable by a black/green BP jacket and a purple handbag and a british sounding accent ;-)

Edit: I just called - they a have several gluten free options..o-O which is awesome and never seen before lately....;-)

I'll be there 530 - 6 ish.

Hello everyone!

I'm a Lethbridgeian as well. This will be my first time attempting NaNoWriMo, so I'm a little nervous, but I'm following Yoda's council: "Do or Do Not. There is no try."

It's nice to know that there are other people right in my very own city that are going to undertake the same challenge. Hopefully, I'll be able to meet a few of you fine folks!

I had a good time too.

As we'd talked about, perhaps a get-together write-in once November hits would be nice.

There were a few writing-related websites that came up in conversation last night. I was hoping maybe people could post links to some of those that they were talking about.

Ah, thanks for the reminder.

I know one of the more entertaining writing tools is Write Or Die. Definitely a boon to one's word count!

Any others I'm forgetting?

Hey everyone!

I am also a NaNo newbie and seem to have just missed the big get together. I hope to be able to attend in the future. Any other librarian writers out there? It's always nice to see a friend. :)

Welcome Baconwrites.

I'm sure we'll have another meetup soon. How does a write-in sound?

We'll need a location that has:
(a) space for a bunch of people with laptops or pen and paper or whatever else people are writing on,
(b) won't kick us out for writing in that space,
(c) access to outlets for said laptops, and
(d) wireless access preferable quick research (that's my new synonym for procrastination).

As for websites, someone was mentioning a plot planning website as well - something about drafting a plot in 30 minutes that sounded really interesting.

The library comes to mind. No munchies, but all the other stuff is an option.

lessee...I mentioned tvtropes.org....which is a deadly site in terms of time wasting.

Around the University there are some nice study lounges. Some are open 24 hours, and being in a student area, there are plenty of vending machines for various unhealthy novelling goodies, most have convenient electrical outlets in abundance, and there's no restriction to the internet access. Most weekdays you could imagine them being filled with students, especially near the end of the month as exams draw near. But on weekends it gets quite empty (friday nights and saturdays being the emptiest with a bit more business on sunday night as everyone procrastinates till then).

I missed the first meeting due to a touch of the flu (or maybe it was just nerves) but I've been meaning to ask the owner of the southside Humpty's (on Mayor Magrath) if we would be able to camp out there some evening. I'm sure I could bully - er, I mean persuade Matt to host it. He's an aspiring writer himself! I'll call him up tomorrow and get back to you all. I know he's had wireless internet installed, but it's not always working.
