Okay, after much discussion, it's been decided that Maine needed it's own regional Dares Thread this year!

I know that other sections of NaNo have separate dare threads for characters, plots, settings, themes, words, ideas, etc. But there's not a whole heck of a lot of us here in NaNo_Maine, so we're going to put them all in one thread.

So, everyone, give us your dares. BIG, small, it doesn't matter! Pass them on and dare your fellow Maine-iacs to include this, that or the other...

My dare, as has been since my sacond NaNo and I took this dare...

I dare someone to use rancid yak butter in their NaNovel. I did it my second NaNo and it's still one of my favorite scenes I have ever written.

Dare: Name all of your characters after the songs of a specific artist
bonus: Don't use songs that actually contained names (IE Guns N' Roses 'my Michelle')

Dare: Steal Oprah

Bonus: Write a Letter to Oprah to a mysterious challenge...

No I am not stalking Oprah, I just thought she would be an interesting character since I never watch her show, well once in a blue moon. She's one of the richest women on the planet, and she loves to talk.... and she loves Sydney Poiter!

Here's the ones I had planned on using if any one else wants to try them too

Found in the 2008 DARES Thread:

Dare: Have a Death Scene in every chapter.
BP: If it always involves a main character.
TP: If it doesn't involve a secret evil organization
QP: If your MC starts to not notice everyone dying.
My Soul: If all of them are ridiculous deaths, such as Death by Tuna Sandwich.

Since I write my NaNoNovels a chapter a day and the contest runs for 30 days, that means I'll have 30 mini-chapters, which in turn means that if I'm going to use this dare, I need to come up with 30 characters to kill off and 30 different ways to kill them off!

Found in the 2006 DARES Archive

Dare: Have an entire scene spent picking flowers.
BP: Picking flowers somehow is vital to the plot.
DBP: If the MC uses them to defeat the bad guy.
TBP: If the bad guy uses them to defeat the MC.
QBP: If everyone is screwed by said flowers.

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is:

Create the ultimate fangirl.
BP if they're obsessed with something completely ridiculous, like Snuggies or the ShamWow guy.
DBP if they leave something in their will to that person/creator of thing.

OK Ken,

OK I'll take your dare. I have totally changed the subject of my novel and I am pretty sure I can work this in! :-)~

I just thought I'd let you know that my best friend thinks the ShamWow guy is pretty cool.

I think I could create a fangirl. I have a large base of experience in the fangirl field.

A dare!
Give your MC a cat
BP Your MC always calls the cat by a different name.
DBP The cat saves the day by doing something that cats normally do (eating, sleeping, peeing, being princesses)
TBP The cat changes color

A cat huh? I'm seriously thinking about it. Don't know yet though. My story is about poaching, and it might be a simple thing for my character to rescue a lion or cheetah cub. I just might be able to make this work.

I think I can work in a cat. The cat might not be too happy, though. My MC is a healer, though she's not aware of it. I'm thinking I cat that really does have nine lives. LOL

I've been toying with this idea myself, but I thought I'd put it out there and see if anyone could make something interesting out of it. So here goes...

Dare: Kill off your main character.

Easy enough?

Bonus: Kill them off in one of the first couple of chapters.
DBP: Have them play a pivotal role in each of the following chapters. (They are the main character after all.)
TBP: Achieve this without having them become a ghost. :]

Best of luck!

Dare: have on of your characters discover that they actually like anchovies on pizza. this must be vital to the plot.

why? I just discovered this myself. bit surprised really.

I could totally make that work about the anchovies. But could it pivital to a subplot? It would add a bit of humor. Also, since I've never eaten one (and never will), can you help me out? Squishy? Smelly?

You should try one. They are not squishy or smelly or even really all that fishy. On a pizza the fishiness is barely noticeable. They are just really remarkably salty. On a pizza, it's similar to eating a greek olive if you've ever had a pizza with those, with a bit of a fishy aftertaste.

Thanks, Ellie. But I think I'll leave anchovie pizza for a punishment if I DON'T make 50K. That should be motivation enough! (I'm not one for salt or fish flavor, anyway. Now a chocolate pizza is a whole different story. LOL)

Have a character speak only in Shakespeare quotes.
-BP- They don't realize they're doing it.
-DBP- The quotes are completely obvious. (i.e."To be or not to be.")
-TBP- They refuse to believe they are being anything but original, despite seeing physical proof to the contrary.
-QBP- They try to sue Shakespeare for plagerism.
-EvenMoreBP- They win the lawsuit.

The Comedian! I wish I could pull something like that off. D: Unfortunately, if I tried, he/she /would/ end up being the Comedian. XD And as for the Shakespeare one, the academy did a play like that two years ago...what was it...right, the Awful Horrible Tragedy of Enrico. The main character is a total emo drama queen who's always speaking in verse, and everyone around him is like "...dude? What's the matter with you?" It was /epic/.

Okay, I've got one...include a fake dagger somewhere in your novel.
BP if someone tries to convince other people that it's real.
DBP if they actually believe it.
TBP if it's obviously fake.
QBP if they actually kill someone with it.

YAY! I couldn't find the original rancid yak butter dare, and I couldn't remember which year's archive it was in, but at the Saco meetings we've been talking about a million and one ways to use rancid yak butter - it's like been the main topic of discussion at every meeting so far! LOL!

We've talked about using it to build Igloos with, filling the White House with it instead of jello ;), ways to use it as a weapon, etc.

I couldn't figure out what to do with it until last night when midnight struck and I started writing. My plot I was going to write was about Jack Frost and a Frost Zombie apocalypse. But it was Halloween and my shelves are full of Vincent Price and Bela Lugosi DVDs and I spent 3 days watching nothing but.

I was still watching them when midnight rolled around and I got to start typing. And that's when something strange happened - I found myself writing about 3 kids who saw this box being delivered to a deserted house and it turns out to be Dracula's coffin, and they meet up with Bela Lugosi and for some odd reason one of the boy's mother has joined a Tibetan yoga group that is lead by a monk that raises yaks and makes yak butter and so, the kids come home from discovering that Dracula has moved in next door to find their mom cooking garlic bread with rancid yak butter! LOL!

OMG! I have no idea where any of that came from, except I spent 3 meetings talking about rancid yak butter followed by three days of vampre movies and ended up writing that. I think the kids are going to end up fighting Dracula with Rancid Yak Butter Garlic Bread - and the way it's going right now, rancid yak butter is going to be a MAJOR plot element this year! LOL!

I've got a healthy chunk of satire in mine, so I think I could include the fake dagger at some point. I've got just the thief to try it. And I bet he could really do it, too.

Ellie, Teresa, I think I'm taking both of your dares tomorrow. But you need to get off the anchovies my dear. You're strange, get over it!

I'm also thinking about the picking flowers thing.

I know the original rancid yak butter - the one I saw - came out my first year! This is my 7th, so it was quite a long time ago. I saw it after my first NaNo and used it in my second. It's such a strange thing to try to throw in that it makes it fun.

I also have to figure out how to use the Dare Auntie gave me at the Kick Off!

Since I'm here, I have to leave a dare...

BoBo! Loofa dog! You know what I mean! That new-ish long dog toy that you see everywhere. The original commercial for it, it was named BoBo, but there's loofa dogs all over the place with all sorts of themes

BP - Someone gets a character - not a dog - a BoBo
DBP - It's a Halloween BoBo
TBP - It's Spring!
QBP - BoBo somehow saves someone's life!

Ken
(And yes, Dragon's Halloween (purple witch) BoBo is sitting next to me on the sofa!)

I know this hasn't been a dare on here, but I saw it a couple places on the other dares forum...

Yes, my fellow WriMo's...

My Novel has...

A "That's what she said."

And I'm darn proud of it too!

Good day. :D

I just included a very strange plot point. Perhaps somone out there will take this dare. i actually used this in mine and i would like to see how somebody else would pull it off.

DARE: Have Elton John appear in your story

BP: if he sings can you feel the love tonight in its entirety
DBP: If it actually makes sense as to why he is there
TBP: If it happens in outer space
QBP: If it is important to the plot
A BBQ chip: if, after said singing in space, he kills your main character with a green highlighter and takes his place as the main character.

(i got TBP ;)
you could win QBP or better!
a BBQ CHIP!!! :D BBQ!!

This just happened because we're sitting around shooting the bull.

So my boyfriend's 13 year old son asked to be in my novel. I said I could add him in. Then I mentioned it to Ellie as we were talking and she added him in. She got past a stuck point because of him.

My next dare is to use my cranky Max in your NaNovel...

BP - You make him a special agent or a lawyer
DBP - He has a laser watch
TBP - His name is Jake steele
QBP - Nissan GTR with rockets

Cherry on top - He's not moody!

Ken

Taking this one. And the flowers. I have an entire prologue that is a rant of how much my MC hates flowers. It's my excerpt on my page.

All three of my kids are already in your novel? Is your child in it yet, or just mine?

How did my kids end up in your novel?

Since I'm here, I have to leave a dare...

Sitting at a Write-In someone said something about purple carrot juice. Someone else heard purple parrot juice. Therefore the dare is to somehow work purple parrot juice into your novel.

BP - You explain how the parrot is juiced.
DBP - The parrot is boiled for broth - parrot stock!
TBP - The parrot is squeezed for its juice/extract.
QBP - The parrot goes through a juicer!

Cherry on top - You come up with a new and creative way to juice the parrot!

Ken (Yes, I've had way too much coffee!)

Just yours. Mouse decided he was a big brother, so I threw them in as siblings.

My son is currently crying his head off over here. So.

Please take my son, Asher, and use him in a novel!

BP - He becomes a minor/major character, not just a walk-on role.
DBP - He helps save someone.
TBP - He helps save the world.
QBP - He does all of the above at his current age of 3 and a half months.

Now maybe I'll have some quiet time to work on my novel...
