As promised, here's the explanation for those who didn't get the regional e-mail.
And if when Carrietta gets here, she wants to do something completely different, that's fine, we'll regroup, but I want people to have time to get in touch with local businesses this month if they need to, so it seems best to get this organized.
Basically, Mississippi is a large state that only counts for one region. Not too surprising, really, considering there hasn't been a huge interest across the state in NaNo thus far. This year, though, I hope we can at least begin to change that. But it's going to take some volunteers across the state who are willing to do basically the same thing the MLs do, but without, unfortunately, any of our magical powers. You can be, uh... the squibs to our wizards. Part of the magical world, but not able to do quite as much as the wizards. *runs* (I'm sorry. I had to put in a Harry Potter reference SOMEWHERE, right?)
...Anyway. I'm asking for volunteers from around the state who will handle organizing parties and write-ins and any other events they want to do in those particular areas. I've tried to split the state up so that no one is too far away from potential events - but if I've missed anywhere, feel free to suggest that I add an area. The volunteers will be 2Ls, Liaison Lites, and they will, I promise, get something very nice at the end for being willing to put in time and effort for this. :-)
The list of regions:
Jackson Metro (assigned - well, sort of; it's mine)
Gulf Coast
Hattiesburg (assigned to Valerie Wells)
Delta
Tupelo (assigned to JeriKit)
Columbus (assigned - that will be Carrietta's, if she wants to do it this way)
Corinth (assigned)
Desoto Co.
I'm open to volunteers for any of the open areas above, and any suggestions for other areas. You can attend events in any area you want, but I'm hoping nobody has to drive more than 30 minutes to an hour to get to events.
Get in touch with me right here or e-mail me at greatbritannia[at]gmail[dot]com if you want to help out. And if you want to do it in an already assigned area, feel free to get in touch with the 2L already there and find out if they want to co-2L.
As I say, special rewards will be given to those who do this, and I hope it really will help get more people in the state interested. I'll be working privately with the 2Ls a little later in the month to help them get things going.
And if you think this is a horrible idea, you can tell me that, too. ;-)

As everyone can see, I went ahead and made topics for those areas that have confirmed 2Ls (as well as Jackson). I know we've got the Google calendar feature, but that relies on me to edit, so it seems quicker and easier just to have threads for the 2Ls themselves to work in. I'll definitely also add things to the calendar, but I don't want to miss anything!
More topics when more people have volunteered for the other areas, of course. :-)

Hello, boys and girls.
Just bumping this so people will be sure to read it.
I'm still looking for people to represent the Gulf Coast, the Delta, and Desoto Co. You can also post here if you're looking for people to carpool with to any of the areas already assigned - I know there was talk of doing that from Oxford to Tupelo. (And if I can get my brother involved in this, as he's apparently mentioned he might, he'd probably be willing to help with that - he's at Ole Miss, his fiancee is in Tupelo, so he makes that commute on at the very least a weekly basis. If he does sign up, I'll try to let the Oxfordians - er, Oxfordites? Oxen??? - know!)

I'd be willing to try for Desoto Co., try, being the operative word, as events and fun things would require transportation and the like, I'd need friends and allies... I don't have a car, you see, and I'm in two areas, Senatobia, for college, on weekdays, and the Nesbit-Hernando-Southaven-Olive Branch area on weekends. Also, my weekends are tight due to the circumstances surrounding being an art major, but in November, there's always time for WriMo~
Anyway, what are all the requirements should I make sure I can meet before really going for something like this, other than being able to organize and make meetings?

Sorry for butting in, but I live in Sardis and Senatobia. I think Desoto Co. could also include the Senatobia area -- it's a pretty large portion of N. Mississippi that needs to be covered. So if transportation is an issue then why not host some events in Senatobia? Perhaps at the library right in town if they'd let us? I thought about being a Lite, but since I'm also juggling being a mom I definitely wouldn't have the time to take on this. :)
Though if things happen in the Desoto area that'd be great too -- I could actually make it, and if it was really needed I could offer transportation (when I'm able to attend, since I may not be able to attend every event). We could meet up in Senatobia somewhere. :)

Starling - Don't worry if you can't get to everything there. What I really need are cat herders for the major "areas" of the state because I can't be everywhere and do everything. ;-) All you'd have to do is try to get some write-ins and parties organized, and make sure people know where to go (the latter, of course, I will help with). So if you're willing to do it, great! Let me know if that's a for sure, and I'll add you to the list.
Enchant - Basically, any place that wants to hold things is welcome to, and anybody who wants to get things going in their area is encouraged to...! I'm just trying to think of areas that would allow pretty much everybody to go somewhere. If there are great places in Senatobia to have write-ins, and you'd like to invite people from Desoto Co. (and maybe the Delta?) to make the trip to you, go for it! It's all good. So there's no butting in, just suggestions that will help everyone have a good time, and make my life a little easier. ;-)
One of the Jackson-area events is likely to be in Vicksburg, so... there you go. Travel is encouraged! (Almost has to be, one very large state with a relatively small population and only one designated "official" area...)

Yeah, if all goes well this year then I may try for next year to help get events going -- just this year I have the "new mom" title and my daughter is 6 months old so its kinda hard to work around her schedule. But when I'm able to go to an event I will offer transportation, and I may help Star if needed to the best of my abilities -- I just can't spearhead anything right now. So Star if you wanna take this on, you got me on board! :D <3

There's a section of the forums specifically for those new to NaNo to find mentors/assistance: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/forum/177
Since most of NaNo is done online, it shouldn't be necessary to have a mentor close by. You could probably find some good advice there, if nothing else!
