Welcome to one and all, new and old! I'm Celeste, your friendly neighborhood Municipal Liaison (ML), and I'm so glad you've decided to join us this year.
As an ML, I'm here to answer your questions, organize the Kick-Off/Meet-Ups/Write-Ins/TGIO party, and make sure November runs smoothly for everyone, so please feel free to contact me at any time-- I can be reached through the 'Send NaNoMail' link on my profile.
To get things started, let's introduce ourselves! Answer the following questions, or feel free to improvise your own:
1. Who are you?
2. Where are you?
3. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
As for me:
1. I'm Celeste, as I already mentioned. :) I'm a grad student in Library Science at UNC, currently scheduled to graduate in December with my Master's-- which means that in addition to writing 50,000 words, I'll be writing my master's paper! Wish me luck!
2. I'm in Carrboro, but I can frequently be spotted in the SILS library on campus or on Franklin Street.
3. Twice, in 2007 and 2008.
4. I made it to 50k both years. It's an INCREDIBLE rush, knowing that you have a book in you-- now that I've started, I don't think I'll ever be able to stop!
5. Currently I've got two ideas struggling for dominance, so I really don't know yet. About all I can say at this point is that it's going to be urban fantasy. Possibly there will be leprechauns.

1. I'm Kim. I'm a sophomore--English/Spanish major.
2. I live on campus.
3. I've participated twice.
4. I didn't win, but I like writing.
5. I have a few ideas for characters, but no plot as of yet. I generally like sci-fi/fantasy, but lately I've been reading a lot of literary fiction. I've also been rewatching firefly, so my story may end up being a confusing mush of genres ;)

(maybe next semester through the Friday Center).
2. I live in Chapel Hill.
3. Yes, the past two years, but I've not won (yet).
4. I like writing, plus my word count has been going
up each year so I'm hopeful this year.
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then
----------tell us what your favorite genre of book is!* My story this year is going to
be a fantasy/mystery mix. My main character is celebrating his

3.] 2008, 2007, 2006
4.{ I finished all three years because I follow the Nanowrimo rule of writing down EVERYTHING and never looking back until I'm done on day 30. My characters like to carry around big lists : )
I also use a handy deck of cards from Chris with an idea or inspiration a day, and the "No Plot, no problem" handbook, and a chart with a daily goal & gold stars.
I've always toyed with the idea of writing a novel...and I"m back this year because it's a part of my life habit now. My brain starts writing in September even though I don't write anything down until Nov.1 'cause I like the game aspect of a strict 30 days.
5./ Several ideas have flitted in and out. One that seems possible is about a goddess who moves to a small town and charms the pants off everyone with her secret magic.
----------I still am fond of the phrase "No Plot, no problem". It's worked for me three times and was fun to see what developed!

I'm Anya. I'm a sophomore at Chapel Hill High (ew. High school).
2. Where are you?
Chapel Hill, but almost Carrboro. At the moment, at my dining room table drinking black bean soup from trader joe's.
3. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?
Twice.
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
I won the first year, but not the second. I'd like to repeat my success and mentally beat my failure until it is no more than a shameful memory.
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
It's realistic fiction, which is a change for me. Based on a short story I wrote, which I can send to anyone who wants to read it. Anyway, the short version is that it's about domestic abuse. The long version is that it's about the nature of causality, but that just sounds confusing.
And I second the thanks to our fearless ML!

Hello! Thanks for being the ML, and getting us lined up before November!
I'm Erin, a teacher and writer with three young children and a retired husband.
We live in Carrboro.
I participated last year for the first time and finished-- but I didn't have the job then. On the other hand, my cat won't go into heat this time around. Boy, was that distracting.
This year, I'll surprise myself-- maybe YA, most likely fantasy.
Good luck to everyone. Happy mulling!

3. This is my seventh NANO
4. Four wins means four novels...don't need much more reason than that. To me, it's more about moving the ball forward than actually making 50,000 words. Best year was 2007. 79,000 words of an 83,000 first draft for a novel that is now 95,000 words and making the rounds with agents. Last year's winner is now a complete novel that just needs to be refined a bit more.
5. I kill people all the time ("Won't you be my neighbor?") and then write about it. This year is no different; however, I'm taking a break from my detective series and trying something new. Will write more about it later.
Four big tips for the newbies...
1. Don't be suckered into endless discussions online. It'll kill your writing momentum. Truly a time in your life when quality is better than quantity.
2. Jot down at least a page of notes about your story before 11/1. It will help you in case you get blocked.
3. Don't fall behind. Set your daily target about the minimal 1,667 so that when you have that inevitable hang-over from alcohol, turkey, or mystery meat from the school cafeteria, the pressure won't be so great thinking about the number of words you have to wrie.
4. Keep your character's names short. You can substitute longer ones later on.
Now, let's get out there and kill some adverbs.

1. Who are you?
I'm Kimberly. I'm ALSO a grad student in SILS at UNC! (And I know of at least one other who will be participating, but as she commutes from G'boro I don't know if she'll be checking into this forum.) I'm in my first year, so I'm a ways off from the Master's paper yet.
2. Where are you?
I live in Durham, but I'm in Chapel Hill a good 40+ hours a week. Sadly I don't get to hang out in the SILS library much because I'm working most days after class.
3. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?
Yes, I think 5 times?
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
I have never won! But I keep trying. Even though I haven't won, I always write more in November than I do the rest of the year. So that's why I'm back.
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
I think mine is a YA fantasy? But it's modern fantasy. But I wouldn't call it urban. It's about a girl who has spent her whole life expecting (against all the things the world holds to be true) to find out, one day, that she has superpowers, or is a chosen one, or something. And then it turns out instead, that the one with superpowers is her little sister. So she pretty much has to re-work her entire self-conception and work through a lot of jealousy.

Hello all!
1. I'm Erin, though online I usually just shorten my handle to Loony. It makes me slightly uncomfortable to link my handle to my real name.
2. I'm a junior at UNC, so I'm in a dorm, but in fact my home town is only half an hour away. And definitely doesn't have any sort of NaNo group, so yay Chapel Hill.
3. I did NaNo last year and it was glorious. I finished on Thanksgiving day.
4. I didn't think I was going to do it again this year, but my friends were all really supportive of my novel and my characters as I work on my second draft, so about a month ago they started telling me I had to do a sequel. I'm not a fan unless they're done right, but a conversation with a friend recently helped me come up with an idea that should work.
5. My NaNo this year will indeed be the sequel to the one I worked on last year, which was a bit complicated and involved time travel. Basically, a pampered girl from the eighteenth century suddenly meets her brother and his boyfriend, who are from an alternate universe and, more importantly, the distant future. They convince her to join them in a hunt for the man who murdered... her. In the alternate universe. It's good fun. But this will be the sequel to that. I'm really quite excited.

1. My name is Dana and I'm a Senior double major in English and Communication Studies. I need one more class to graduate--I scheduled it that way on purpose because my life, heart, and soul is the UNC baseball team and there was no way I was going to graduate before my last Spring semester. (If you've ever been to a game I am the obscenely loud one with very long hair.)
2. I live on campus (way down south.)
3. I've done NaNoWriMo twice and failed miserably both times.
4. The first time I was crap because of Housing drama (sudden removal from room to escape evil suitemates), the second was because of an extreme medical emergency in October leaving me with no time to work on NaNoWriMo in November as I had to catch up. Such is life. I'm hoping to do better this year. I plan on working on a novel I've had in my head since freshman year and that I've thought about so much that I think it's ready to exist. I've never gotten involved in a community or get together during NaNoWriMo and I'm excited to do it this time! Hurray for participation!
5. My favorite genre (aside from early Modernism and Victorian novels--English major remember?) is science fiction. I am an absolute science fiction junkie. I'm at the beginning of a project to read all the Hugo award winning novels ever. I'm loving them so far. Anyway, my novel is about a genetically engineered woman who (leaving out key details because I'm evil) is sent into space as an intergalactic translator. I'm off my rocker. It has (as plotted) 12 chapters with 11 corresponding short stories. I've already written the first chapter, and I won't be counting the (mostly written) short stories in my word count. So this is for the eleven unknown darlings--the meat of my novel.

Hey there folks, Nathan here. I teach flute part-time at UNC and live out in delightful Carrboro.
I wrote my first novel (51k words) last June using "No Plot, No Problem!" and loved every minute, at least, when I wasn't crying hysterically and/or suicidal. Holy cow, writing a novel is hard work!
Not satisfied with that trial by fire, I wrote a novella (23k words) for the "Three Day Novel" contest (currently, the novel is with the judges. Yikes!) I reached a level of insanity with that one that I hadn't dreamed existed - in the throes of creation and sleep deprived.
But I've found a passion for writing that has been waiting to be let loose since I read my first YA Science Fiction book when I was 12. I've written a bunch of short stories and a novelette, and joined critters.org and another writing group.
One of my employer's said "Nathan never does anything a little." Yep, that's me. So I'm back for more.
I've got about six novel ideas contending for November. It will be interesting to see which one wins. I probably won't know until the end of that first day. I read a lot, but Science Fiction is what captures my imagination the most.
Good luck, everybody, and, yeah, let's go waste those lowlife adverbs.
Cheers,
Nathan

Who are you?: I'm Tiffany, though I usually go by Tiffari online (not a huge difference, I know). I'm currently a Freshman at UNC Chapel Hill, double-majoring in Linguistics and Japanese.
Where are you?]: Surprisingly enough, I live in an apartment in Carrboro. Somehow, UNC let me live off-campus, which makes me happy. Campus is less than ten minutes away by bus. I have a car, but I can't park on campus. I can get everywhere else, though!
Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?: Yep! This is my fourth year, actually.
If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?: I've won twice. I finished my novel during NaNoWriMo in 2006 and clocked in at around 70,000 words. In 2007, I started off strong, but then realized that I hated everything about what I was writing, and just fizzled out about halfway in. In 2008, I didn't finish my novel, but I reached the 50,000-word mark.
Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!: It's so hard to describe! It's basically a sci-fi, futuristic, fantasyish, macabre, character-driven thing. Post-apocalyptic, in a sense. It's a monster. Really. It started off as such a tiny idea, and now it's exploded into what will probably end up being a trilogy. It's insane. But I'm determined to continue it! I started it last year, and I'm hoping that NaNoWriMo will give me the kick in the butt that I need to keep going.

I am a historian and like historical fiction. I read this essay about 10 years ago about a young unmarried woman that died from a an herbal mix given to induce a miscarriage. Her family did not really know what happened until a number of years later when her sister could not keep the secret any longer and spilled the beans. Their dad had to hound the local sheriff for a long time to press charges against the boyfriend and the 'healer' that had given the herbs. The boyfriend was from a good family and I can imagine how this really tore apart their small rural community. Oh and the event happend in the 1790s.
I am looking forward to meeting you all.
Cheers,

Eep. New here.
1. Who are you?
I'm Whitney. Born and raised in Chapel Hill. Currently annoyed that facebook has decided to stop working. Also currently procrastinating from studying for a Stat test. On vocal rest, thus drinking lots and lots of tea. I'm a senior at East Chapel Hill High. I adore music, it's my number one passion. Writing is more of a hobby for me, but I enjoy it enough to want to write 50k. Obviously.
2. Where are you?
In Chapel Hill. I'd rather not get any more specific than that.
3. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?
Nope! I'm a fresh-squeezed newbie.
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
I just felt like it, I guess. I wanted to give myself a challenge.... plus one of my friends has been begging me to do NaNoWriMo with her for the past three years and I finally agreed. I'll be trying to write 50k the same month that a) most of my college applications are due and b) I'm performing in a theatre production. I'm still not entirely sure why I'm doing NaNoWriMo, but it looks like fun, so, why not?
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
I have three different ideas. I don't have any idea which one I'll choose or if I'll choose any of the three come November, but they're there.
1) A romance, with the working name 'For the Flowers'. Woman starts getting letters from her long lost brother, along with a flower, on her doorstep every week. Love letters from different source also start showing up with the flowers. Love story ensues between woman and writer of love letters, who knew her brother. It sounds the most boring but I really like the character of the woman that I've come up with.
2) A psychological thriller/fictional letter collection, with the working name 'Letters to Brother Emotion'. Collection of letters from fictional psychiatric hospital. Experiment by psychiatrist, asks psychotics to write about certain emotions, how they relate to them, etc. It would take the most research but it's the one I feel the most inspired to write.
3) 'Start Signals', which would be a collection of all of the first chapters of all of my story ideas. I have over 20 story ideas that I've compiled over the years. Most of them have a first chapter planned out, but I haven't written any of their beginnings.
That's it! Hopefully I'll have time after rehearsal next Friday to meet y'all at Caribou Coffee. :)

I'm jayewo's sister - out here in the Rockies - with a beautiful, blue sky and lots of white fluffy stuff today! And we haven't even hit Halloween, yet! This is our 2nd sizable snow of the season.
Anyway - it is all her fault... whatever comes out of this...she told me about NaNoWriMo when we were visiting Mom in Aug and now, I guess I will have to give it a whirl. The funny thing is that I started to develop a few characters back in Sept - and now, maybe I can use them.
I am an unofficially retired architect, I have a husband, two cats and a dog who looks like RinTinTin and acts like ScoobyDoo. We live up at 8400' above sea level where the air is thin and clean - and the sky is soooo blue!
Genres I like ... hmmm... mysteries (started with Dick Francis when I was a preteen), scifi (Heinlein is a god!), fantasy (There is SOOO much more than Tolkien), historical novels (love Bernard Cornwell) - and I used to be heavily into spy thrllers - read everything by Ian Fleming, including Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang and his travelogue on Jamaica - not the most exciting thing he ever wrote, but I was a disciple, what can I say...
So ... we'll see if I can do this -

5. This year's novel has been ricocheting about in my head for over a year, and I'm determined to finally get it down on paper. You could say it's about slavery but that wouldn't really be true...it's more so about grace. There are two races of feries (like fairies but not so nice). One of the races has assumed divine superiority over the other, because they have wings and the others do not. The "lesser" race has been enslaved by the WInged race, and the story is sort of a romance between a boy with wings and a girl without. He thinks his purpose is to free her (and all the wingless feries) from slavery, but really it's the other way around: she has to free him from his guilt. I know the beginning and I have a hazy idea of the end...and the middle is a mystery. So I'll see what happens....

Howdoo' all, I'm Derek, though several friends have taken to calling me the highly imaginative nickname of "Blue" because of my blue hair (go figure) (also, I'm toying with the idea of doing a decent Joker for Halloween so I've been letting it fade to a nice sickly green, hee hee). Anyway, Derek works.

Found out about NaNo in '05 about 3 days before Nov so I didn't have time to plan a story and wanted something that could go anywhere at anytime about anything and my first novel was about dimensional jumping teenagers on a scavenger hunt being persued by a homicidal maniac...in 3D, called "Hunting Scavengers" Hee hee, and the whole anything/anywhere totally worked and I made it with days to spare. In '06 I went with a tongue in cheek comedy about a bunch of tourists visiting A.P.R.I.C.O.T. Center in FL that get thrown 100,000 year back in time, called "How Crocodile Invented the Wheel". Made that one too, and actually hit the 50k mark and was only done with half the story! In '07 I fumbled and was so disillusioned by it that in '08 I plugged my ears and made la la la la noises all Nov pretending NaNo didn't exist. We'll see what happens this time.
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back? Oops, I accidentally answered that in the last question.
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
One of the things I discovered about the insane writing pace of NaNo is that about a week or so into it, my characters would begin taking on lives of their own and as I was furiously pounding away at the keys I'd catch myself and realize that whatever a character was doing at the time wasnt' something I'd planned or intended to do but it was totally in character for them so I just went with it. SO, this time, I've decided that I'm going to start my novel off with describing how the novel will end...with the destruction of the Earth (or maybe bigger, who knows), and I'm going to tell this to my main character and give her that week of me writing about her and her world. Then after that, it's going to be up to her to figure out how the hell to stop it from appening! I figure this way it takes ALL the pressure off of me to try and write a frikin' 50k word novel in 30days, I mean, that's crazy pressure, let her figure it out! Oh yeah, and because she knows it's going to happen, they think she's crazy and is starting out locked in the looney bin...
Yeah, I'm notoriously evil to my MC's.

This is my fifth year; this *will* be the year I finish, I'm determined!
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
I got to about 37,000 ; 35,000; 29,000; and 24,000 each of the past ones, without even posting updates last year.... But, I will do it! No more excuses! :)
And no more time-travelling paradoxes to get tangled in this time.... :))))
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
Not entirely sure of the story, shall be winging it this year.... but no more time travelling!!! :)
But generally speaking, I'm pretty into urban fantasy, mysteries, classic fantasy and sci fi, oh and just about anything else that catches my eye.... or sits in the same room with me more than five minutes:)
Looking forward to going crazy in good company again!!!!!!!

1. Who are you?
I'm Ashley, a junior biology major at UNC.
2. Where are you?
Right now I'm curled up in a chair at my desk, but I live in Chapel Hill.
3. Have you ever done NaNoWriMo before?
Sort of? I signed up two years ago but didn't get any farther than 200 words before giving up in disgust. I signed up at the last minute and was already tired from crew, so that just didn't work. Now that I've quit that mess I hope to give it a real go this year.
4. If not, what made you want to join? If yes, did you win, and what on earth made you want to come back?
not even close.. but i'm going to do better this year.
5. Describe your novel! If you have an idea yet, that is. If not, then tell us what your favorite genre of book is!
It's going to be sort of science fiction I guess, but not set too far in the future. A base is being set up to start colonization of the moon, but the project fails and the astronauts are left stranded. I want to explore how the different personalities deal with their abandonment. Earth's population may or may not be wiped out at some point, I don't know.

Hey, Cindy, I'm not too far from you (across 64, behind Progress Energy). My son and his family live on the Silk Hope/Liberty road. Maybe we'll meet one of these days! I can be found at gretajames.blogspot.com.

I guess I'm an old fart, of the feminine variety, living in central Chatham County.
I've experimented and think I can make the daily average, but I won't really know until the end of the month!
----------Good luck.
