I don't know if there's one of these somewhere else (I know the one last year was in here), but I just wondered if there are any others from (or close to) Sheffield? I, myself, am right inbetween Sheffield and Rotherham.

I live in pretty near Sheffield, though just over the border into Derbyshire. Hi!

I'm in Barnsley. I wish I wasn't, but it's not that far off!

I'm in Sheffield and was wondering if folk fancied meeting up for drinks, support and sharing during Nanowrimo? I'm based in the South part of the city but work in the centre so anywhere round there would be ace for me. But I'm easy.

I too am on the border of Rotherham and Sheffield. I haunt Meadowhall frequently, usually upstairs in the Oasis where I can be found with ice cream and a notebook. It's fun.

If we fancy meetup, where would be a good place? I'm not incredibly familiar with the centre of Sheffield.

Also, is anyone going to any of the events in the Off The Shelf festival? I was really excited at first, but nothing looks like it fits my interests. :(

I work in the River Island in Meadowhall :-) So I am frequently there too. I think that it's have to be somewhere that sells coffee... cheap good coffee too. Would it just a social thing, or an actual writing thing?

I'm out in the sticks, between Doncaster and Sheffield. Ironically I came here to ask why we don't have our own regional group, Leeds, York and Nottingham are miles away. Does anyone know how we could set one up?

I'm up for a meet up during NaNo too! Anywhere in Sheffield centre would be ok for me - I get a bit lost once I move out of the city centre lol

I do know how to get a region set up, as it happens. : )

Getting your own region needs someone to volunteer to be that region's Municipal Liaison. If you check the 'About' tab in the banner, you'll find 'Becoming a Municipal Liaison' which has all of the details, but basically there are only a couple of rules. The first is that you must be over 18 (because you've got to responsible for everything). The second is that you must have done NaNo at least once before (it's enough of a challenge just doing the novel in your first year).

Once you have a Municipal Liaison, you can petition to have your own Regional Lounge if you think there's enough of you. Otherwise you'll be part of the mighty Elsewhere.

The first year that I did NaNo, there was no region for us. We had by far the longest thread in England :: Elsewhere though. So when I came back for a second year, I volunteered to be the ML and requested a forum of our own (we were onto about our 6th page in Elsewhere before anyone else had made it off the 1st, so they pretty much had to agree). And we've been here ever since. But we're really very happy to have you guys in here with us. We're one big happy Yorkshire family. : )

Do you have to be on the same user name as last year - I did NaNo last year, but lost everything to log in... because I don't remember things over the year and my user name was something really obscure and weird!
Hmmm... we need to see if there are enought Sheffielders first!

But yeah, a meet up in city centre would be grand.... but as to when and where, I don't really know. I will say this again for emphasis though - COFFEE!! :-)

I'll ask my sister, she's not so much into the novelling, but she does know her coffee shops. ;)

I don't think you'd have to be on the same username, although it would help if you could track down what your old one was. However, it's a slightly moot point because applications for this year are closed. HQ won't be taking on any more MLs till next year now - if you're interested then bear it in mind for next September.

As for whether there are enough people to justify a Sheffield region, I'd be quite happy for this one to become England :: Yorkshire next year, if there were other MLs to help me look after it. We pretty much are Yorkshire already, albeit unofficially. I'm just not sure I can handle the entire county by myself. I feel guilty enough for never making it to any of the Leeds write-ins, without feeling like I ought to be in Sheffield and Bradford and Hull as well...

Well, if you do widen it to Yorkshire, officially, I'd be interested in becoming an ML. I will just have to remind myself when September next year comes around! :-)

And yeah - a good coffee place with comfy seats and tables would be good for a meet-up. Any preferences for dates? Times? etc.

Will said meet-up be before November, late October to kick off NaNoWriMo, or is it to be prefered during November, as a booster sort of thing - we can all get together and kick eachother until we write...?

Hi another Sheffielder here... south side of the city. It would be great to meet up. Have been on the site for a while, but have never actually got anything written... usual stuff time, inclination etc, but this year I have all the time in the world, as no longer working...

best wishes

Hail fellow Sheffielders. I'd love to meet up with some others from Shiny Sheff too, as I've never done this before, it's all a bit new to me, and I'd like (I need!) a bit of encouragement! Anywhere in the centre or Meadowhall would be good.

The obvious choice would be the Orchard Square Costa, since that's partially in a bookshop, but I think it was double-booked for the only available date last year, so we ended up having it in the Showroom.
Also, hey, another Sheffielder here. Seems like there's quite a few more of us than last year, too.

There's the Starbucks in Orchard Square too - if you can stand the coffee. Seats are comfy though, and they're usually quite accommodating. (Just don't tell 'em I insulted the coffee!)

I'm thinking maybe the 22a on Norfolk rd. Think it'd be nice to support a local business rather than a big faceless corporation. Never been inside though and have no idea on the size of it. I'll have a look during my lunch break tomorrow.

I'm a Brummie ex-pat living in the sticks of Barnsley, halfway between Rotherham and Barnsley, working in Rotherham, though member of mostly Sheffield groups. I'd be happy with a Yorkshire region too, or a Sheffield one.

I checked the 22a and it close a bit too early if we're planning an evening meet up and it seemed not to have much space either. Seemed a nice place though but looks like back to the original ideas. Any one want to commit to one?

I'm new to Sheffield so you'll all probably have a better idea where to go and meet than I do, but I would love to meet up soon - possibly before it all kicks off?

It would be great to get an idea of what we're writing, what interests us, genres we're writing in too - I guess my 'category' would be literary fiction, but I'm going to see where my idea takes me. I'm planning to use nanowrimo to get a solid first draft underway.

Perhaps The Showroom may be an idea, as it's open early evening etc, you can get drinks, tea/coffee and food if you so wish.

Or a pub? Can anyone suggest a decent PUb? Not to loud so we can speak would be good..... I'm not sure on pubs ..lol as I don't get into town in the evenings much these days.

I know the Showroom is easy to find ... and on bus, train and tram routes.

Not sure what's wrong with my internet at the moment but I posted this yesterday before Shullie ^^ asked about pubs, and my post seems to have disappeared!

Anyway, the only pub I know in the centre is the Dove and Rainbow in Hartshead Square - family connections! It's a bit small, and maybe not terribly top notch, but it's quiet lunchtimes and afternoons, if we were going for a weekend - and they'd do coffee and soft drinks if we wanted that; just concerned that we don't exclude any younger folks.

Well, if last years meet-up was at The Showroom, maybe that's the best to go for.
I've been to the Dove and Rainbow before, I was 17 (sshh) and went there after a gig once, and didn't like it all that much. But that was at night, so maybe it's different during the day/maybe it's changed in the past year.
... that is, if that's ok with everyone?
Maybe we should take a vote for location.

Also for date.
Before or after NaNo has started?
We could do an actually kick off meet up, to save that long travel to Leeds for the official one, on the 31st.
Orrrr we could do it after NaNo has started? Maybe a week or so into it, like maybe Sunday the 8th. I'm looking at weekends because that's usually when most are availiable, but if anyone has any disagreements/preferences then you can make another suggestion. I'm free most afternoons, but not many evenings.
Maybe we could do both - a kick off and one during, to check up.

I'm away in Scotland for weekend of 31st, so can't make it to the Leeds do.

So personally I'd prefer the 8th - first, cos I'll be in Sheffield, and second, for a bit of encouragement for that allegedly killer second week!

And yes, Starbucks is as good as anywhere.

Hey Guys! I'm a sheffielder too - I live in whichever part of the city walkely and crookes are in. I love 22a. Their cakes are the very best in town! But the chances of my being able to come along are slim to none so you can ignore my opinion!
