We are planning a kick-off party for Nov. 1 here in Hattiesburg. I'm finding us a location now. As soon as I know, I will post it here. I hope to see a lot of folks there!

What about the library? They're usually pretty cool about things like that.

Well, Nov. 1 falls on a Sunday so I think that would nix the library. Doesn't mean it can't be used for subsequent meet-ups.

Wish I could offer venue suggestions, but though I've lived here now going on 3 years, I haven't done much beyond school and work. Odd evening work hours makes it hard to get out and about. :-/

Oh, that's true. Didn't think about that. I always forget that it's closed on Sundays...What about one of the coffee shops? Other than that, I can't think of anything. I dunno.

Actually, i was thinking of 206 Front Street. It's a comfy spot on a Sunday, a little more laid back. I am calling them today. The perfect place for us would have been Cafe Boheme, but they closed for good last month.
This would be just for our kick-off party. We can plan other events other places. For example, we could meet at Pastry Garden in the early afternoons to just write together if anyone is interested. And we need to plan an end party, too.
So, how many do we have in this tribe? We need a headcount!
Thanks for all your great ideas.

By the way, a writers' group I belong to is meeting tonight from 6-8 p.m. at Keg and Barrel. We are informal and mainly visit and talk about what we are writing and markets for our work. Please join us!

206 has fantastic food (I should know--my dad's head chef), but Bianchi's Pizzeria would be a lot cheaper, and a lot friendlier toward a writing party. My dad's head chef at both places, and he's said that if we really want to pay for the private 206 room, fine with him, but he thinks we'd like the pizzeria better.

That's great! I had no idea Bianchi's was open on Sundays. This party is not meant to cost anyone anything - the idea was just to gather in a friendly place and if someone wanted to buy a Coke or whatever, they can do so. I thought we would be welcome to sit on the balcony at 206.
Bianchi's is a cool place, but just a warning to others, its food is also pricey.
My goal was to set up something for around 2 p.m. Nov. 1, which is a Sunday afternoon. If you all prefer to meet at Bianchi's - if it will be open then - that's fine. And we can certainly have different events at different places throughout the month. Please let me know what you all prefer before this Monday, Oct. 12.
This is meant to be fun, open, friendly. Whatever you all prefer is fine with me. Just let me know. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's open on Sundays for lunch. I'm never quite sure which one is open when. I'll check.

But yeah, the food is kind of pricey. But it's a great place, so if it is in fact open on Sundays (I'm almost positive it is, but I could be wrong. I think I'd remember this kind of stuff, but there you go...), I think that's our best bet.

ETA:

Yes, Bianchi's is open on Sundays. We just need to figure out a time that works for everyone so I can let my dad know when to expect us.

Enjoying, check your inbox.
I think meeting around 2 p.m. on a Sunday would work best for most adults. If you all prefer another time, this is the time and place to make your desires known! Let Enjoying know what you prefer.

Eep, sorry I haven't been around in a while. I had exams last week and today I had the PSAT and it's been pretty mad overall. But all the testing is finished for now, so I should be able to check in more often.

I've checked with my dad (Steven DeLuca, in case any of y'all were wondering), and he says anytime on Sunday is fine, since it usually doesn't get very busy.

2 works for me, but if any of you guys have any other suggestions, go ahead and let me know, like Valerie said. Also, just for reference, how many of us are planning on going? We don't have to make reservations, but I'd like to give my dad a little heads-up.

I figure if this goes well, we might be able to have other get-togethers at the same place, but we can explore other options, too. The library seems like it would be a good place to meet if we don't feel like shelling out cash for some pizza.

Anyway, y'all go ahead and let me know about the time and everything. Thanks! :)

Is 2:00 on November 1 a definite? I'll add it to that first post, and be sure to mention it when I send out the next regional e-mail (where I'm hoping to be able to put kick-off parties for all the areas that have known participants).

It seems to be a definate. :)

Okay, a few of my friends are considering doing NaNo, and I threw the word out about the write-in, so a few of them might show up. Also, my English teacher (any of y'all know Mr. Bill Kirby?) might show up, too, since he's interested.

Hey there Wrimos of Hattiesburg,

I'm going to be in Hattiesburg from November 4-6, and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting together for a couple hours to write one of those nights? I'm open to any location in Hattiesburg or Petal and look forward to meeting some Hub City NaNo participants!

That would be pretty awesome! Personally I'm up for the 6th since I don't work that night. As far as venues are concerned... I'd have to leave that up to people who actually have social lives.

This might merit a new thread, but since it's specific to the area, I'll start here. Are any of you guys willing to be interviewed for the Hattiesburg American? I work on the production side, putting out the USA Today, but I still go and chat with the reporters/copy desk guys for the local paper. I was talking to one of the guys tonight about NaNo, that maybe they'd be interested in running an article about it in the next week or two and he said I should go ahead and suggest it to the features editor. If anything comes of it, I'll let y'all know.

...Whoa, seriously?

Guess I'll have to try to get off work early one of those days and drive to Hattiesburg. ;-)

Actually, here's a thought - anyone interested in trying to do something for Guy Fawkes Day on the 5th? (Remember, remember, the fifth of November...) I actually leave work early that day anyway.

I am MONDO interested in getting together with Chris. :D And I'd be interested in doing something on the fifth, too. And if nobody else wants too, I wouldn't mind being interviewed for the paper. :)

This is what was Robyn Jackson sent to me to answer, and she did ask for others she could talk to... so I'm taking the liberty of posting the questions here for folks to answer if they wish. She mentioned that she needs them back by noon Tuesday to go out, probably in Wednesday's paper. Sorry I couldn't post these earlier, the first I saw them was last night which is my Monday and it wasn't a good night. I don't have her address right in front of me, but give me a few hours and I'll post it once I've gone in to work.

1. When and where will the get-together be on Nov. 1? Can anyone who reads the story and who would like to participate in NaNoWriMo attend?

2. How did you learn about the event?

3. Why did you decide to participate?

4. What type of novel will you be writing? Tell me a little about it (something about the plot, where the idea came from, etc.).

5. Will this be the first novel you've ever tried to write?

6 Have you been doing any research or planning in advance so that you'll be ready to start writing on Nov. 1?

7. Have you participated in NaNoWriMo before?

8. Do you do any writing now, either fiction or non-fiction? Have you always wanted to be a novelist?

9. What's your favorite novel?

10. Who's your favorite writer?

11. Is there a particular writer or genre that influences you?

12. What do you hope to accomplish by participating in NaNoWriMo? Do you hope to actually get your novel published?

13. How do you intend to get a novel written in a month? Is it a realistic goal?

14. Besides the get-together on Nov. 1 for local people who plan to participate, will you be meeting with others as a kind of support group during the month?

15. Is there anyone else I can contact for the story?

16. Do you live in Hattiesburg? What do you do for a living?

17. Anything else you want to add?

Sorry, it was a pretty crappy night at work last night so I didn't get back here with the email address. If you do want to fill out the interview questions for Robyn, they can be sent to: RobynatTLP@aol.com

I'd probably make the email subject something with NaNoWriMo in it.

... and now off to class.

yay.

I just wanted to say "heck yeah!" to getting together on the evening of November 5th for a write-in. Would 7:30 pm to 10 pm work for folks?

Now for the big question: Where should we do it? I've had many productive writing sessions at the Java Werks (http://www.thejavawerks.com/pg_about_us.cfm) and I think they're open late-ish. Last time I was in town, I went to a fancier, cool coffeeshop on Hardy across from the zoo. But my sense was they were more of a go and eat and talk kind of place, rather than a stare-intently-at-your-laptop kind of place.

Any ideas on location?

Sadly, I'll have to pass on a meet up on the 5th. I'll be there in spirit, but physically, I have to be at work.

ETA: I think the cool coffee shop (Cafe Bistro, I think) across from the zoo is now closed.

Thank you, EnjoyingInsanity! The article is supposed to run in this Sunday's paper, so she should still be able to use your contribution. I hope so anyway; I believe it's always better to have a range of views instead of a sample size of 1.

I might be able to come to a write-in on the 5th. I'm not sure where to have it though. Jave Werks is one of the closest for me, but I'm open to any option.

Also, I'm looking into coming to the Sunday kick-off at Bianchi's Pizzeria. However, I'll have to find out where that is. I've never gone to a write-in or kick-off party during NaNo before, so this will be new for me.

Bianchi's is in downtown Hattiesburg, on Front Street, past the Saenger. It's next to the A Gallery, if that helps, and close to Brownstone's.

I'm game for the meet on the fifth. I'd have to leave a little early because it's a school night, but it works for me. As for location, I've never been to Java Werks, so I dunno how it would work for us. What about the Depot in Hattiesburg? It's a pretty posh little place. Anybody know how late it's open?

Okay, I went by yesterday and finished setting everything up. We'll be in the party room, and we've got it from one to two. I'll be getting there a little early, and I'll be bringing a power strip and tape so we can make sure we have enough outlets if anybody needs to plug in laptops or anything. I'll probably be lurking in the front for a bit so we can make sure everybody winds up in the right spot.

See ya Sunday, everyone! :)
