Hi everybody. I'm Stacy and this will be my fifth NaNoWriMo, but I don't know ANY of the Iowa City WrMos because the past four years I've been sequestered at boarding school (maybe you've heard of us... out there by West Branch...).
So I just wanted to introduce myself and say hey, who's getting their pregame on? I know I am!

Hi, I'm Matt, this is my second year (failed miserably last year). Working hard on prep work this year to hopefully prevent me running out of steam five days in.

I'm a fifth-year, too. This will be my second win (oh yes, it will be. It will be =.=) last year being the first. I think part of the game that helped me succeed last year was actually hooking up with a group of WriMos in my hometown of Anchorage, where I was last fall and winter. I've moved into Iowa City this summer (I live downtown) and I'm extremely excited for November and the people I stand to meet :)

I've done NaNo since 03, sans last year, and lost every time. I keep trying, though. This is, however, my first year in Iowa City, so I'm looking forward to meeting some new novelists this year.

Personally, since there are a few of us semi-new folks, I think that there should be a pre-november get together. I don't know who to talk to about it, am very shy IRL and am probably not qualified to do any sort of planning, but I'm going to put it out there.
----------I also really like to bake, and am willing to do a lot of it for NaNo-ers. I'm a serious aspiring pastry chef, so I'm really NOT kidding about baked goods. I want to feed you!

We could go to one of the coffee shops around downtown or something. I think there were a few get-togethers last year, but I only ended up going to one (since I mostly gave up 5 days in). I'm not sure if the ML has anything planned or not for October, but if not, we could just do something informal.

Please count me in! This is my first year, but as a journalist, I'm used to writing rapidly...
I'd love to be part of get-togethers. And I can bake too.

So... should we set a date or something? Or, I dunno, I'm silly/apprehensive.

I'm Karalee. I started last year and realized I was not going to make 50k by the end of the month. So I'm trying again this year!

There are some absolutely wonderful coffee shops downtown. The first one that springs to mind is Capanna, which is there in the ped-mall. They have good coffee, food from the Wedge (pizza, pasta, hot sandwiches, soups, etc), free internet, and LOTS of seating. And they're open late (11 on week nights I think? At least, anyway). That would be my recommendation. It's also the coffee shop that was the designated hang-out for the Writer's Workshop summer festival this year (don't know if that's a regular thing or not).
If people are looking for a venue for non-business gathering (in order to have something that was more like a potluck/not obligating purchase kind of thing) I could potentially arrange to open my place for that. I live in a one-bedroom just across from Mercy (close to downtown Iowa City) but I have decent space and light in my living room and could probably accommodate a pretty healthy handful of people if anyone wanted to make arrangements more like THAT. I would, of course, need to know in enough advance that I could clean et-cetera. I have three cats, and any cooking that anyone else wanted to do would have to happen elsewhere and be brought - my kitchen is almost so tiny as to not accommodate me cooking for myself half the time ;).
I, for one, would love to have a pre-November meet-and-greet sort of thing to get familiar with some of the faces of local NaNoers. Also, is there anything being planned for kickoff (Halloween) night?

All right, I'll go for it and say a week from tomorrow, next Sunday afternoon/evening. It'd be like "one week left" count-down. Is that good for people? Would you all rather prefer a public coffee shop, or should we discuss forgettingwalk's lovely hospitality? Should I make a new topic?
