That's what I like to see, no posts in the Capital of Literature. Couldn't leave it like that though. Had to put something in. Even if I don't say very much.

I'm Brian, I live in Balerno. Anyone else from Edinburgh around????????

I've been living in Edinburgh just over a year, and this will be my first Nano - I am a bit worried about finding the time and inspiration to reach the 50k!

Hurrah for there finally being some posts in this forum, I was wondering where everyone was.

Hi everyone, I'm Anne and I stay in Leith. Nice to see some posts here.

knottychloe, I'm a bit worried too but I know we are not the only ones.

Time is going to be tight. I'll be travelling the first week and I have just been reminded of a couple of things later that month that I have agreed to do.

As for inspiration, it comes and goes. I'll be glad if I get a short story out of this!

VegAnne - I think that's a good way to think about it. I've haven't written anything since my early teenage years, so even a short story in some form would be an achievement. I'll still aim for the 50k but if I can't stretch my plot that far I shall try to be satisfied with whatever I achieve, as it's better than nothing!

Hi everyone,

technically speaking I'm in Fife, but nobody from Fife seems to be active on the forums, and I can see Edinburgh quite clearly across the Forth - I hope that counts. =)

Good luck everyone,

I'm aiming for the 50K but I think when I edit it, I will be happy with a short story. I usually have to strip things back when it comes to editing. Not that I've written lots of fiction, mostly non-fiction/academic stuff, and nothing as long as 50K.

Hello Edinburgh! Greetings from Corstorphine.

This will be my second NaNo, and hopefully this time I'll actually finish it (got caught up with real life *ugg* last year at the 35k mark) so bring on November. This is also my second year in Edinburgh, and my second year as a Uni student. A shout out to anyone else from Heriot-Watt who might be taking part in NaNo this year!

Heya all...

This is my 3rd time doing nano, 1st time in Edinburgh though, just started University up here, so will be interesting to see whether I'll be able to resist the temptation of cheap student union alcohol and actually write something. I also have my birthday in November too, so hopefully no-one will notice, else I'll be dragged round every club in town... Am aiming for 60k this year, did 53k last year, but if I'm truly honest, I think I'll just be happy with the 50k again. Will no doubt have a good rivalry with whoever is above me, University of Edinburgh is far better than Herriot-Watt. And I also hope we kick Darlington in the Word War count, else I'll never hear the end of it from everyone back there...

Anyway, have fun and have luck, and to those Newbies out there, welcome to Nano, I hear the rehab clinics for stress and madness are excellent around here.

Good Luck!

I'm a Heriot-Watt fresher this year! I'm new to Edinburgh (staying in HW halls) but this will also be my second NaNoWriMo (which co-incidentally I also failed at around 35k).

I've been able to write larger amounts on my long term novel this year, so hopefully I'll be up for the challenge.

Hi

Its my first time doing this but really looking forward to giving it a go. I'm a student too, second year at Edinburgh uni. Aiming to get to at least 50k which sometimes looks achievable and sometimes very daunting depending on what kind of mood I'm in. Will be interesting to see how I manage with it as time management and actually motivating myself to do things are not my strong points but with a lot of tea and very late nights I'm hoping I'll get there. Got a basic outliine in my head and partly on paper but it'll no doubt fall apart as soon as it requires being written down.

Good luck to everyone else in the city.

Hiya! This will be my third nano - i finished in '06 while in nottingham, gave up partway through my first edinburgh one last year. Trying to do a lot more planning this time, because i'm determined to get back to 50k this year.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!

I wanted to do a big countdown and start at midnight on Nov 1st, but i seem to have been invited to two gigs, an album launch and a halloween party, so maybe not...

PS i didn't make it to the 'write-in' on the train last year - are there any plans to do one this year? It sounded awsome!

Hi all

This is my second year; I won last year but still have occasional nightmares about the struggle that was getting from 15k to 30k. The toughest 15k words I've ever written, even worse than my dissertation (I'm a HW graduate ;-))!

Truth told I still haven't completed last year's Nano novel, as it didn't really work out as a story when all was said and done, but at least it's proof I can switch off my inner editor for (more than) a month. Looking forward to more of the same this year!

Hi all.

This will be my first year writing in this area as a participant, i was last years ML for Fife but due to a variety of reasons i am not doing the ML this year main reason is moving in with my girlfriend in Edinburgh. So will be nice to just write away this year and get stuff sorted out.

Hey,

~waves from Fairmilehead~

This is my 2nd year doing Nano but didn't get very far last year - run up to my late Nov wedding took over! ;-) Hope to get a bit further this year though 50k is daunting. Just passing the 56k wordcount on my current wip and I've been working on that for months. LOL

Happy writing!

Heyhey!

Greetings from Canonmills here! Though I'm closer to central Edinburgh than the heart of Canonmills I suppose. Meh!

First NaNo here! It's awesome to see so many peeps who are so close by! It's more motivation for me! <(^^)^

Good luck to you all and lets have a blast!

I wish I was getting ready to NaNo in Edinburgh. :( I feel a little out of place in my new region.

My goodness you are all on top of it! I should introduce myself, and what better time to do so than when I'm procrastinating?

I'm Elysse, I'm your ML, I'll be heading into my eighth year of NaNoWriMo and my second as an ML! I originally hail from the home of NaNoWriMo, but uni pulled me across the Pond and I now spend most of my timing hiding around the University of Edinburgh campus, procrastinating on PhD study by writing up discussion questions for my tutorials.

AND I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone, particularly new folk! To the new folk, don't worry: I'm as panicked as you are!

Incidentally I have NO plot and it's just starting to get me panicky now!

Hello!

I'm an Edinburgh Uni student (new this year) so its definately going to be odd doing NaNo outside of london and oxford. I failed dismally in 2007 (I think I wrote about a tenth of what was necessary) but I won last year and plan to do so again - with or without inspiration.

There are some really useful sites which might help people:
http://lab.drwicked.com/writeordie.html (this one is really good as it forces you to write, if you don't you either get sent repeated prompts telling you to write or your words get deleted etc)
http://www.writing.com/main/handler/item_id/1151082 (it's part of www.writing.com which is brilliant in and of itself - a really useful group with a forum/prep/writing prompts etc)

See you at the kick off!!

Hey,

This will probably be my 3rd year doing NaNo and hopefully I will finish it this year and hopefully I will make it to some events.

Things just seem to happen in November that take my time away!

Hey everyone, I'm Katie
I'm from Edinburgh Uni too! 3rd year psychology

Is the meet up at Teviot going to happen? Would be awesome to have some writing buddies - all my friends are more artists than writers to be honest.

I'm a NaNo virgin... but was about to try and get into writing anyway.

November is always my busiest month anyway but I thought I might as well try!

Hello!

I'm Kirsty and am friends with Katie from above and she's convinced me to try this!

I've heard about it before but I'm not the best writer so I thought I'd try.

I'm at Telford College doing Art at the moment, so I'd be one of those artist friends Katie spoke about! :D

Hi... Um, this is open to all, right? Because I'm still in school, but all I want to do is write.
So, I'm a NaNo virgin, too. I'm kind of scared, but strangely excited. Now if only I could find my characters. They keep running off, see, and I can't seem to find them...

Now I'm going to go off character-hunting. But it was nice to meet you all!
