Hi Riddle,

Thanks for pointing out what I had almost forgotten - that Nano time draws near once more.

Perhaps I will send out an email reminder to all registered participants, to see who's up for this year's challenge.

P.S. Welcome, if this is your first year.

I'm up for helping out in any way, if you need me! (I could possibly be a co-liaison, if you still need one -- what would the duties entail?)

This is my second year at Nanowrimo. I'm planning on actually finishing a book this time around, rather than ending up with the half a book I had last year. I too have no idea about what I'm writing, but I have a feeling it will involve zombies and violins. Maybe.

I can't wait to start!

Isn't that funny? I totally got the idea for zombies while watching The Red Violin. Don't ask how Francois Girard= Zombie Apocalypse in my head, I don't know.

I'm a newbie nano...I have some characters who won't get out of my head and a plot I think I'm going to like. I think the trick is going to be the actual writing. Good luck everyone!

Welcome Debby!
Strong characters have a way of creating incredible writing - congratulations on already having some that are pushing you to write! Once November starts, let them take over and just write, write, write. You'll love it. =]

Hi everyone!

First time around for me, though not the first time writing--been doing that since I was 14. It's just the whole 50,000 words in a month thing that kind of terrifies me. I HAVE pulled it off before, just.... not in a MONTH.

Dear God in heaven, we're all crazy. Just thought you should know.

I say this in the nicest way possible.

Anyways, an online friend from Australia suggested I give this a shot, and wouldn't you know it, ideas are buzzing in my head. Nothing definite yet, but I think I'll start making notes over the next few days or so..... should be an interesting month.

Don't get too spooked by the word count. It's a challenge, and can be a heck of a ride, but it really is do-able if you relax and resist the urge to edit until December.

50,000 words in 30 days is just 1,666 words a day, which is an hour or two of typing for the average person.

Just use the next few days to come up with an outline, and you'll do fine.

You might want to check out Chris Baty's book "No Plot, No Problem" and the other forums for helpful tips and advice, as well as come to the Intro.

I'm not TOO intimidated by it, because I know it's a word count I've reached before.... it just took me considerably longer.

Barring anything drastic, I should be at the intro. :)

Resisting the urge to edit will be hard... I managed to banish my nerdy self early on in high school, but she lives in me and will be screaming and sobbing throughout November, I'm sure.

Thanks for the pep talk, though. :)

Hi,

I'm not exactly new hear but since I couldn't remember my old login info, I appear to be starting over with a clean slate. Probably for the better, as I have never managed to finish one of these things.

Though I am sure if you had added up the word counts to all my forum chatter it would have easily exceeded 50 000 words each year ;-)

Oh yeah, hahaha. I can talk for hoooooours.

Happy to say I've actually got a vague plot floating around in my head! Now the trick will be committing an outline to paper. o.O

This is my very first year. I have to say, I'm a tiny bit nervous as to what I could possible write next month. 50,000 words seems like a lot. I'm worried it's definitely going to come out all gibberish (which I know is sort of the point... heehee). I'd like to try and write something that makes a little bit of sense at least. :)

Psht. Yeah, it seems like a lot---but find something you love to write about, as Kathryn stated, or check out the Adopt A Plot threads for ideas (there are some awesome plot bunnies there just hoping for a home).

As for myself, I'm deliriously happy to state that not only do I have a plot, but my characters are starting to fall into place and I have a synopsis on my profile. I'd be ridiculously flattered if anyone here would check it out and let me know what they think.

So. November. LESS THAN TEN DAYS AWAY, PEOPLE!

(Not to stress anyone out. It's just that now that I know what I'm writing about, I'm really ready to start. :D)

People do nano for several different reasons. Some just enjoy the fun and the challenge of doing something outrageous. Others entertain the dream of being a professional novelist and use nano as motivation to start writing. It's the latter group that worry most about whether what they write will be any good.

My advice, if you are in that second group, is to develop an outline now, so you have some idea where to go next when you get stuck and don't have to resort to wordpadding. You don't have to stick with the outline. You can explore different paths and then return to the outline if they don't prove fruitful. But having an outline means you stand a better chance of having material you can edit into shape after nano.

Above all, don't expect to write a perfect draft in 30 days. Your aim is to get 50,000 words down, which is more than many would-be writers do in five years. It's a huge step forward. It gets the monkey off your back, after which, revising is easy.

'Ello all.

This is my third year doing NaNo, and my third year in Kingston (started it first year of college) but I've never been to a Nano meeting. I might try for it this year since I now have a bit of experience in meeting people off the internet under my belt, so I'm hoping that it shouldn't be too intimidating.

Nothing to worry about andthemonster. Apart from this crazy writing thing, we've never been a very intimidating group. Looking forward to seeing you.

Well, I'm a little eccentric and pretty much outrageous (I'm not trying for self-flattery, I swear), so I might seem a little silly. :P But I swear I'm not horrible. Just... not terribly concerned about what people think of me.

Hope I haven't already scared you. ;)

Hey, is anyone walking to the intro meet from the direction of St Lawrence College? That's what I'm doing, and I don't mind company. :)
