How's it going, Wrimos? Has 2009 been kind to you so far?
For those of you who don't know me, I'm Foxplushie (aka Amanda) and I drew people's characters last year to help fundraise for this yearly tribute to literary abandon. This year, I'm back to do the same.
For a donation of just $10 to the Office of Letters and Light, I will be happy to sketch and ink a black&white line-art picture of one character of your choosing.
The first twenty to sign up and donate will receive a picture by the end of November.
Here's how we do it:
- Make your donation on the official NaNo website.
- Fill out the questionnaire in the second post to request your picture on this thread. Step 1 and step 2 are interchangeable; however...
- ...your picture won't be started until proof of your donation can be seen (I'm talking about that little halo on your profile).
- People who already have halos can sign up, too. You don't have to donate again.
- I'll contact you at least once during the sketching process to make sure the picture is to your liking.
- Upon completing the picture, I'll be happy to arrange to give the original to you at a write-in, snail-mail it to you, or just scan you a copy and e-mail it, depending on your preference.
Here's a sample of my line-art:
Sample 1
Sample 2
Sample 3
Sample 4
Sample 5
Sample 6
Sample 7
Sample 8
All characters are © their respective owners.
If you require specific examples, please feel free to let me know and I shall sketch up something real quick to post here.
Disclaimer: I don't profit from this at all, except for the chance to hone my drawing skills.
Technical Babble: These pictures will be on 9"x12", acid free, smooth bristol paper. I sketch with a 2H pencil to eliminate stray lines on erasing and I ink with a 005 Micron pen.

Name: Olwen
----------Gender: Female
Species (if human, Race): Human (though you know the whole story there) Gondorian (supposedly)
Age: Not determined--youthful appearance though. Perhaps early 20s
Height: Taller than your average human female
Body Type: Slim
Hair: Long and dark
Eyes: Grey
Other Facial Features/Facial Shape: A small star shaped scar on the left side of her face, right where her jawline meets her ear.
Species-specific Notes: Um... well, she's actually an elf, though she doesn't look it at the moment. And... She looks regal. But not in this particular moment, as you'll see when we come to pose.
Birthmarks/Scars/Tattoos: Oops. Mentioned the scar already
Clothing Style or Specific Outfit: Some sort of long, pale, gauzy night dress
Pose (optional): I'll fill you in on this one later.
Personality: Upbeat, though not in an obnoxious way. Pleasant to be around. Diplomatic. Headstrong.
Quote (optional): Uh... I'll get back to you on that too.

Oooh! This is just too good to resist! I loved your image of my MC last year Amanda and would love to have another whenever I finally figure out what the deal is and staple down a general storyline.
I do like that you're doing this again this year. It was a fabulous addition to last year's writing. I was not only looking forward to the end of 50k but was looking toward getting a copy of what you imagined my character to look like (from my description).
So, I guess that makes me #2?
I'll edit this later and send you a PM with the particulars (so you don't have to worry about checking back on my account).

Unfortunately, for reasons I'm not entirely certain of, I currently lack an Edit button on the first posting of my List. While this contains trace amounts of fail, I remain undaunted. Yea, I shall put on my Big Girl Panties and deal.
While I still have no clear idea of what went down, I searched the Tech Help forums for a clue to my problem. Results are currently inconclusive, but I did learn that the Edit button gets disabled on any comment that has been replied to. Therefore, I respectfully ask that this particular post not be replied to, in order to prevent future instances of this. I'm not sure if that will fix the problem, but it's worth a try, I guess. Feel free to use the bottom-most Reply button liberally.
That said, I present "The List and Status Report - Redux". If this one loses its Edit button, then I'll try another tactic. The Forum Gremlins will not defeat me!

Thanks for offering to do this, it's a great incentive. Hopefully it doesn't interfere with your writing time!

You know what I love the most about this? It's not seeing my character come to life, it's seeing all the halos that show up in our region. I know many of us would donate anyway, but since we doubled our total donation amount between 2007 and 2008, I'm pretty sure this made a difference. We're at $170 so far for the year--and it's only October 12! Vancouver, you rock!

I am donating anyway since I'm an ML, but I would love to put it towards this too! I will be donating in the coming days, but wanted to make sure there was still room on that list for me!

Lastly on both feet, in black ink, one "x" it should reach from both sides of the ankle, cross over the top of the feet and end by her big toe and little toe on each foot.

Hi, Night Silver! Thanks for your question.

Name: Haiki Zhu
Gender: Male
Species (if human, Race): Zanryu koji: Collective term for Japanese war orphans left in another country, namely China, after the end of WW2. Many immigrated back to Japan and faced difficulties finding jobs, friends, and are treated as second class citizens. Zhu is half Chinese, half Japanese.
Age: 26
----------Height: 5'3"
Body Type: Androgynous, long limbed and slender with soft features and less defined musculature, easily mistaken for either male or female.
Hair: Black with dark brown highlights
Eyes: Black and almond shaped
Other Facial Features/Facial Shape: He wears his hair long and typically tied back in a sloppy tail. He has pierced ears and prefers to wear silver hoops.
Species-specific Notes: He's got the more yellow cast to his skin typical of Chinese, and frowns a lot, leaving tiny wrinkles at the corners of his eyes.
Birthmarks/Scars/Tattoos: He has numerous tiny burn scars on his hands from hot oil and knife scars across his fingers. He works in restaurant kitchens and tends to have the poorest jobs so his hands are rough and callused.
Clothing Style or Specific Outfit: Jeans, slightly baggy, hooded sweatshirts that he can use to hide in, beat up sneakers bought cheap, and a scowl. Sometimes in the winter he dresses up in jeans that fit, a knit sweater in some god awefull shade of green and a bright orange scarf with raggedy ends.
Pose (optional): Slouched, leaning on a wall or walking with his head slightly lowered and hands stuffed in his pockets.
Personality: He's a recluse, preferring to keep his own company or hang out with his cat Mew. He misses China and his Chinese friends, but the political situation seemed better in Japan. Unfortunately life in Japan is hard and he can only get menial jobs, he's constantly jeered at and has developed a loathing for 'rich bastards'. He hopes to save up the money to someday go to America.
Quote (optional): "If you live by the philosophy of 'Hold Nothing', you find yourself as empty as your hands."

I have two questions: This character goes through various changes at various points in the story. Should I just pick his image at a particular moment and describe it as it exists then, or should I offer the description of his change as well?
First description will be character at beginning of story:
Name: Collin Kellogg
Gender: Male
Species (if human, Race): Human
Age: 28
Height: 5'8" (shortsy)
Body Type: stalky legs, perhaps bowlegged? but slight, does have a prominent chin with a dimple mid-center, and perhaps a disproportionate bum, because he's a CPA and is on his bum a lot (not HUGE, but not as small as his slight body would indicate)
Hair: Brown, conservative, businesslike
Eyes: Blue eyes
Other Facial Features/Facial Shape: prominent chin, dimple in the middle of chin (not like Gaston from Beauty and Beast, but something more proportionate. Noooo onnnnnneee fights like Gaston! He's married, never takes off the ring, inset diamonds, but mostly flat band. Heirloom.
Species-specific Notes: Human.
Birthmarks/Scars/Tattoos:
Clothing Style or Specific Outfit: Suit, 3 piece, something upper-class.
Pose (optional): Contra posto
Personality: Jokester (when not at work), always planning things
Quote (optional): ...
Or, this is how he'd be after the story gets going and when he's been transported into a magical world.
Name: Collin Kellog
----------Gender: Male
Species (if human, Race): Human
Age: 28-30
Height: 5'8"
Body Type: Average build and muscular. His body at this point would be quite porportionate as he'd have been in a different world for 6mo-2 years, diet changes from his coffee, and scone every day for breakfast/Sandwich or Soup for Lunch/Large Dinner, to Meat and protein based meals. Great deals of porritch, and very little fresh vegetation. He does manage to get in his Vitamin C, so no scurvy.
Hair: Anywhere from the buisness cut he had when he came from his world, to a long ponytail. Up to you here.
Eyes: Still Blue
Other Facial Features/Facial Shape: Pronounced chin, in this world he'll have a tattoo on his wrist in the shape of a serpent.
Species-specific Notes: In this world he does have magical abilities. He simply hasn't developed or used them often. He's the son of a powerful sorceress and war official and there is a prophecy about his return to this land.
Birthmarks/Scars/Tattoos:
Clothing Style or Specific Outfit: He will always either be waring, or holding a leather jacket/coat made from a roan cow. Before it's death the cow had a map magically tattooed onto it's back. Collin was wearing this when he transported into the magical world, and it will only show the map while in his hands, or while his hands are upon it. He was wearing a kilt as well as his family tartan when he transported from his world. He was at the Scottish Highland Games just before the transport.
Pose (optional): The prophecy will say something about him becoming a spirit warrior to help save the world from the various evils amongst them. A warlike position could work, a studious one, if you have him looking at the jacket, or even an exhausted position, as he'll be doing more work here than he's ever done in his life.
Personality: Still a jokester, though he's developing a military mind as he goes. Since there's also an aspect of Magic that comes out intermittently (when he's most stressed, threatened, or happy) it could be that he has a different way of taking on problems.
Quote (optional): Collin’s head hit the pillow as it had so many times before it was only seconds before he drifted off.
“Hello Cailean.” It was the roan cow again, her big brown eyes were looking out at him as she chewed her cud. She was inside a clearing, surrounded by a dense forest.
“You’re hair is longer.”
He rubbed his hands through it and then roughed it up. “I guess.” He sat down on a stump near her. “Why do we keep coming here. I’ve never even been here in person.”
The cow snorted and fog came from her nose. “We will always come here. This is the magical place. This is the place where everything started.”
Collin sighed. He always felt like he was talking in circles with the cow. He never understood her. What did it mean, “this is where everything started?” He had been born fifty miles out of Edinburgh when his mother was eighteen. He had been born in his grandparents house, certainly not out in the middle of clearing surrounded by trees with a cow in the center. “What began here?” He thought to ask this time, though he figured the cow would give some further illusive answer.
“The journey.” The cow said simply.
Again, he didn’t know anything about these things. “You talk in riddles! Should I yell it into yer big lugs to make you understand?”
“Don’t be upset Cailean.”
Collin did not like the Gaelic pronunciation of his name. His grandfather had pronounced it that way as if it were the only right pronunciation of his name. It was the only name the cow ever called him. “I dun know what I should be at this point. With dreams that go nowhere.”
“You’ll understand all of this when it’s time.”
Collin turned to the cow and reached out to hit it. If it was just a dream it wouldn’t matter if he hit the cow anyway. As he did his eyes opened and he was back in his bed next to Kelly. “Goddamned dream.” He said, sitting up.
Write all day, write all night, write write write, just don't turn out the light!
