Being ex-ML now I no longer have to keep so focused and, er, serious (was I ever?) so I'm setting this one up this year.
Two new topics started in as many minutes. Can you guess that I'm procrastinating from work.
The author search is a bit weirder this year. And what's this Amazon thing about?
Okay, meandering thoughts being reeled in.

Hahah they're using something else NOT drupal as stated below but a new powering system called cloud computing which I guess is being powered by Amazon. So yeah, they're hoping it'll fix the lag issues when November hits!

XDD. When I heard of "cloud computing" it sort of gave me some very fantastical ideas. Gods tweaking search results from the clouds, for example.
"No, no, those mortals can't be allowed to see that it was a Deus Ex Machina, quick, quick, erase that entry from Google before it fully loads!" and all that kind of nonsense~
>_____< It seems like I've plotted myself into a corner with this year's NaNo~ Why must Eric be such a stickler for "not bringing his sister more trouble" even though he's already taken over her body, made her take a gap year from school and broken the lease on her apartment? Now he's having a headache as to "what to do with the belongings" seeing that most of them are new and the rest of them were lost in the incident that got them both into this mess in the first place.
And it's amazingly paradoxical that the more you don't want other people to get to know you, the more you have to avoid quiet, small places. Because there everyone knows everyone and new things always get something like the full treatment. Damn. Do I have to start researching Tokyo and New York and Dublin now?

Actually the site is running on Drupal, but I think the Amazon web services is more for the scalable server load. Hopefully it'll help with the traditional crash/lag.

I was under the impression that just meant "we outsourced our service to Google and it's now on the net rather than under our control"

i've heard of "cloud computing" - heard a friend briefly mention it before - he works in IT - anyhow, if my memory serves me, it's something like all software is shared on some server so that individual computers don't have to install the software so it has more RAM/space to actually do the computing part?? Does that make sense or even mean anything to anyone??

My class was at the World Wildlife Foundation last night for a talk on conservation. I ended up with a panda keychain to 'support' their efforts.

Our school had ACRES trying to convince us to help save bears lol. Taking up a CIP project next year and I'm feeling stupid for letting the teacher psycho me into the sign-up sheet.

ACRES isn't so bad. We do need to save the bears though. Farming for bear bile is just so cruel and so, so wrong.

I personally feel that creating a world where everyone is educated enough to realise that bear bile does absolutely sweet fanny adams for your health would have the same effect, and would have the side benefit of causing us to not need to have to deal with the people at ACRES, who can, let's face it, occasionally seem to be living in bizarro land.

Bizarro land is the perfect term to use for some of them. Though, they're still not as bad as PETA or even some of the Green Peace people.

I did in fact read about clouding in The Oldie magazine (yes, we have our own magazine). I hadn't realised I'd been clouding all along.
The forums are a bit quiet this year. Has anyone else noticed? My favourite bit of the site, searching authors, has disappeared again. I like finding familiar names.

Random point #1: The Panda's huggable. And yes, apart from Bear Bile, the whole crap of Rhino horns should go out the door as well.
Random point #2: I haven't been on as much and end up having to read like crazy because of school. Blah.
Random point #3: The Fame OST rocks but I think I'm gonna end up writing my WriMo to Lady Gaga again.
And I think that's about it?

I've hit an obsession with 8-bit Okami music for the new game Chisaki Taiyo (http://kotaku.com/5351390/okamiden-kicks-cuteness-up-a-notch)and now I need to see a psychiatrist for that problem, just like the obsession I had with Pokemon music last year. I hear my teachers speak in 8-bit and my life seems pixellated. Not to mention a serious addiction to WoW and Facebook games, drawing art of imaginary creatures that are cute yet misleading at the same time, and...yeah.

I'm waiting for Okamiden too! Chibiterasu is so adorable, I just want to squish him
and name him George. To be fair, I've heard nothing but rave reviews of original Okami, at least the Wii version.
I love the 8-bit, largely because 8-bit was the first real time I recognised Mario. The NES and original Super Mario Bros was before my time, but I'm an unabashed Mario fan :D

The original had great music, interactive gameplay, and had a really looong storyline. I really loved drawing circles around every single withered tree to bring them back to life. Problem is I had like 60 lives from all those sun shards which took away most of the fun from fighting. Playing Rhythm Heaven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-osPIwR_k4) and Soul Silver on my DS while waiting for Chisaki Taiyo to come out. I have a Wii so maybe I can bring it on that day itself and you can see how fun SSBB is. Only game in the world where you see Mario beating up a pikachu.
Ghost Trappers FTW!

I'm reading 3 books concurrently right now due to my short attention span.
1. Strange Brew
2. American Gods
3. Fortunes's Fool
So far, the third book is the one holding my attention, though I think that's just due to the retelling of fairy tales that's got me hooked. I love fairy tales.

I'm currently re-reading "American Gods" as well.
Neil Gaiman is my ultimate literary hero.
I also picked up Roberto Bolano's "2666" the other day. Heavy reading but hoping to get to it pretty soon. Anyone here read it? If so, how was it?
And since we're on the topic of books, has anyone read any Japanese books?
----------I personally recommend the author Haruki Murakami, his most famous probably being "Kafka on the Shore".
Absolutely briliant writing.

SSBB is like the best game ever. I'm addicted, even though I'm actually stuck on one of the levels. I actually just put together a SSBB wallpaper last night, haha.
But basically! SSBB = Super Smash Bros Brawl, the latest in a series of fighting games by Nintendo. It's a massive crossover game with mostly Nintendo characters from all their various games. There are also a few non-Ninty chars, like Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series (Konami) and Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega).
One of my favorite games ever, even though I'm not into fighting games, and a total must-own if you have a Wii. (Of course, I'm a little biased, seeing as I'm a huge Mario fan.)
Also, kiaace: it's not advisable to bring your Wii, because there will probably be no TV or monitor to hook it up to, and it'll be quite crowded because there are other events going on as well.
