Hey all. Since some of the other regions have already gotten started, I thought I would post something up here, too. My name is Nisha and I write Young Adult fiction. I live in Nassau County. I'm 24 and a law student.
Last year I didn't see a lot of scheduled get togethers, or at least ones that I could make, so me and a small group of people met every Monday and Wednesday at around 6:30 at Borders on Old Country Road in Nassau County for about two hours. Sometimes we would do Sunday's as well.
This was a great schedule we had going, and by the time the month was over, we were so close that we ended up forming a critique group and we critiqued our Nano books throughout the year. We just finished a couple months ago. Yeay!
Anywho. This year, we no longer have a group since one of our members moved to South Carolina and the other two can't commit to writing a novel in a month. However, I'm still game! I plan on writing every Monday and Wednesday at Borders in Nassau County, Old Country Road, from 6:30-8:30 for those of you who are interested in joining. I bring my laptop because there are tons of plugs around and they now have free WiFi.
I don't want to open this up to changing venues or times because usually when that happens, no one can commit, so this is the schedule I'm sticking with and if anyone would like to join me, I'd love company!
Take care! The final countdown has begun...

Heya, Nisha.
Yea, I'm still here too. 5 years officially, I think. Disabled, living in Bayport (Suffolk County), and I don't drive: but good luck with your group. Having something like that is nice.

Hi Nisha! I am definitely going to be coming again to write, and are definitely looking forward to it.
Anywho, for everyone else, HI! My name is Erica, I'm 20, an go to university & work full-time, and live in Nassau County. Last year I wrote a romance novel, and this year intend to do the same. :)
I am up for meeting at other times, in the afternoon or at night (more towards the beginning of the week), to have a write-in.

Thanks Nisha; Long Island is a pretty large region and it doesn’t help that both of us MLs are in Suffolk County. The important thing for write-ins is to find a nice place to write, set up a schedule and stick to it. If you post it, some may come.
We are still in the process of fleshing out major meeting times and possible locations for write-ins. (Apparently some places like Starbucks are trying to promote throughput and don’t like it when people spend long periods of time at their tables.)
I might be able to make one or more of your write-ins as it is only 25 minutes from my workplace in Hauppauge.
Our kickoff party is 2 pm at John Harvard's Family Restaurant in Lake Grove (at the Smith Haven Mall off of RT 347). We have on occasion met at the Book Revue and then across the street at Canterbury Ales in Huntington. If you know a good place in Nassau to have a midway party that would help balance things out. Good beer is optional (although I think my co-ML would disagree here; the home brewer would consider it mandatory).

Hi Nisha & all other LIers,
I live and work in Nassau County and since I don't drive, it's easier for me to go to the Manhattan Write Ins & Meet Ups than it is for me to try to get to those in Suffolk County. Last year Starbucks and Panera were the places, I would love to have a place where I can write and drink.....

Even though I'm in Suffolk County I'm closer to the Nassau border then out east so mid-island events would be easier to get to. I am planning on gettin to the opening get-together so hopefully my plans work out. I would definantly agree to another trip to the Book Revue (loves that bookstore) maybe someplace in Farmingdale or nearby would also work.

I'm just going to make two points (not that anyone needs to take them into consideration or even listen):
1. Maybe there should be a ML in Nassau County.
----------2. Having write-ins at places that serve drinks (like bars/pubs) are great ideas; however, for those not yet 21 it could be something that makes it not so fun. Plus, those under 21 might not be able to get in. And then you have those that don't drink (which seems to be more and more people these days). So maybe sticking to places such as Panera/book store/Starbucks is a better idea...

" We have on occasion met at the Book Revue and then across the street at Canterbury Ales in
Huntington."
That sounds GREAT to me, as I live about 5 minutes away!
Canterbury Ales is NOT a bar, BTW. They serve alcohol , but they allow anyone in, as it is a restaurant. My 8y/o loves it!
I am extremely nervous, as this is my first Nanowrimo. We'll also be going to Japan from the 2nd through the 11th. I am taking a laptop with me, but I fear I may get behind!
Thanks for having me!

Dangerous_rose brings up two good points in my opinion. Here's a suggestion: the NYC Region has a chat room available 24 hours a day. Perhaps this could work for Nassau-Suffolk as well because of the distances and size of Long Island. That way we can support each other, do the word war thing, add to our word count and eat & drink whatever we want from the comfort of our own homes.

Hi--
This is my first time doing this. I recently moved to Long Island from California...currently living in Setauket (Suffolk County). I write fantasy, mostly--we'll have to see what comes out. :-p
I would definitely love to do some kind of regular meetup in Suffolk, but I haven't been here long enough to have strong opinions about good locations. Actually, I do have one vague idea--what about meeting at a library? I think it's usual for them to have meeting rooms or classrooms. People could bring snacks, if the library allowed it. Another spot that could be good (though maybe the location isn't super convenient) is Tiger Lily Cafe in Port Jefferson--I've only been in there once, but it seemed low-key and like they wouldn't mind a group hanging out for a while.

I am going crazy right now because I am 15 minutes away from that borders! (btw, did you mean Borders or B&N?)
BUT I have class from 6:30-7:45PM every monday and wednesday! And I don't get home till 9pm. :(
If you do anything on sundays I would totally come. There is a serious lack of Nassau events.
Is anyone from Merrick? There is a Starbucks on Merrick Rd. that is begging to be NaNoed in.

I have to scout out a few new places
There is a new Panera Bread on Nesconset Highway at Port Jefferson Station. This looks like a great place for a write in location. Other locations include the one at 160 Walt Whitman Road, Huntington Station; 3097 Jerico Turnpike, East Northport, 358 Broadway Mall, Hicksville (not personally been to); 11 Commerce Drive, Riverhead (right off Rte 58).
Getting events in the Hamptons might be a problem because there are few NaNoWriMo Writers there. I know a few years ago we had an event (relatively west) in the Public House in Southampton, but the only people who showed up all lived west of the canal.
(Ironically; I’m driving myself and my mother/father to East Hampton for an event of the Lost Tribe of Accabonac early in November.)

I'm a commuter student attending Stony Brook, so those locations in Huntington and around Port Jeff would probably be plausible. ...that is if I manage to finally pass my road test in the middle of the month! (Going for test number six on the thirteenth, hopefully the DMV will stop hating me this time. D: ) If not, I'll just go crazy trying to find people on campus that's doing it also.

You'll do better than I did, my last road test. That was the December before I fell at work and I wouldn't trust myself behind the wheel now, especially since it's hard for me to even get in a car on the driver's side, even as a passenger. I drove head-first into a snowbank. ^_^ That's the first and last time I've seen steam escape anyone's ears.

I'm from East Meadow, which isn't too far from Merrick, and even closer to the Borders on Old Country Road. I'm free anytime Mon-Fri after 5, and all day on weekends. I'd love to take the plunge and meet some new people since this is my first NaNoWriMo, but it does seem sad that there are so little Nassau County events going on!

Hey everyone! My name is Aaron and I'm 29. I work in Jericho but I live in Bellport, so for me different locations may work depending on the days and times. I also have Tuesday & Wednesday off, so obvious weekend events to meet up are not always the easiest for me to make.
Anyhow, I'm eager to finally start my first NaNo. I've known of this contest for years and this is the firs time I'll actually be able to participate. I look forward to working with everyone and hopefully making some meetups!

Hey loves!
I didn't participate much in the group last year though it WAS the first year I'd actually won NaNo, and the year before that I was in Little Rock, AR, but BEFORE that I was in the group, so I don't know if anyone remembers me from that. 22-year-old, Elementary Education/Psychology major, student teaching sixth grade part-time two days a week, working part-time two days a week, and going to class. But NaNo WILL happen this year.
Actually I may or may not be leading a gaggle of middle school students in Young Writers' Program this year. And I may or may not have recruited the security guard/artist/writer who works downstairs (I'm at work, which will be where...most of my NaNo gets done).
I'm location in Brookhaven but I'm out at Oakdale, Brentwood, and Shirley, so I get around; if a drive is less than an hour I can make it. Also, for you Nassau Countyers (and myself perhaps, depending on the night), there's a coffeehouse in Hempstead called Witches Brew and my friends and I have loitered in our seats for hours after ordering. It's a little cramped and there's no guarantee that you'll have an outlet, but it's an excellent creative atmosphere.
As for the actual NaNo novel, it's either going to be a full-blown extension of a short story concept, or an embarrassing Young Adult novel that I could share with my students while we work.

Hello Folks! I'm in NE Nassau, and this is my first Nano. I'm working on my character development and outline right now. It is going to be a Sci Fi Thriller. I have hit a few roadblocks as far as my depth of knowledge in certain areas of setting and background of my characters. Do you all just read up on that stuff later, or should I really do my homework before I keep going?
I would be game for any of the Huntington events and the Witches Brew sounds wonderful. I will also be writing at the Barnes and Noble in Bayshore/Brightwaters from 4:20-5:45 and/or Milk and Sugar on Main Street in Bayshore on Mondays and Tuesdays from 4-6. If you think you'd like to meet me there, just shoot a message over!

Hi. My name is Jennifer, I'm 24 and I live in Old Bethpage. We recently moved here from Bethpage, so we're still settling in. Is the Borders you write in next to the China Buffet in the Airport Plaza? Cause if I can get a ride down there, I'd gladly join you, since my dad works in Farmingdale and I work down on Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage. I don't have a laptop, but I can print out the rough copy of the first chapter I wrote out while bored at work, or I can email it to you.
If you want my phone number or something, let me know. My email is jaded110@gmail.com.

Hello all,
I’m Christian and this is my first NaNo. Haven’t 100% settled on what I’m writing yet (a choice between a near future genre mash up with giant monsters, luchadores, Lovecraftian creatures, alien invaders and more; a contemporary horror/thiller set in a city you can’t easily escape; or a YA novel about a boy whose twelfth year takes several unexpected turns—I’m leaning toward the latter of the three), but I am excited to start after having spent many years in a company I co-founded that was no longer my company by the end of my tenure—a very recent development. I live in Middle Island, have a day job and don’t have regular access to a car, but will make meetings when I can as it would be nice to have a group of peers to talk shop with.
I will be at the John Harvard’s kick off party for sure, the rest I’ll have to play by ear. I look forward to meeting many if not all of you in the coming weeks. Should you be so inclined, say hi at manakalita@gmail.com.
Take care,
Christian

Welcome one and all. To those who are coming to the kick off, I look forward to seeing you there. To others, hopefully we can meet at a write-in or another event. In the mean time, don’t forget to say nice things to your inner muse before you start cracking the whip in November. It’s ok to brainstorm what you are going to write at this stage. And remember have fun. (It’s supposed to be about having fun!)

----------I'm from Rocky Point. Suffolk.
This is my third NaNoWriMo.
I could definitely make it to the library in Port Jeff, or the Tiger Lily. Maybe even the Panera bread that just opened. A lot of the time I have trouble getting to the write-ins because they're too far out and my parents don't want to drive me.
I'm a senior in high school and I have class at Dowling on Mondays from 6:30-9:10. Also, I have an essay class on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30. The only time it looks like I'll be able to get to a write-in is if it's on a weekend. I'm hoping to get to the Kick off though.

Hey All.
I'm Diane. I've done Nano for a long time now, but only won once - last year. Not that, that novel went anywhere, but it did feel darn good to say I did it. This year I'll be writing Young Adult, and I'm excited for the novel I have planned -if done right, I think it could actually be published.
I live in Islip Terrace and work in both Commack and Patchogue. To be honest, I dunno when I'd be able to make a write in, since I havethe most complicated schedule.
My schedule is this:
Mondays off at 5 (in Commack)
Tuesdays off at 5/6 (in Commack) but go to my sister's house for dinner.
Wednesday off at 9 (in commack), free before 1 (maybe a meet up in the area around 11? that gives me time to write and go to work)
Thursdays off at 9 (in Patchogue)
Weekends:
11/1Working in Patchogue, free before 1 (maybe a meet up in the area around 11? that gives me time to write and go to work), off at 5:30 (in Patchogue)
11/6 off at 6 (in Commack)
11/7 - off
11/8 Working in Commack, free before 1 (maybe a meet up in the area around 11? that gives me time to write and go to work), off at 5 (in Commack)
11/13 off at 6 (in Commack)
11/14 off at 5 (in Commack)
11/15 Working in Commack, free before 1 (maybe a meet up in the area around 11? that gives me time to write and go to work), off at 5 (in Commack)
11/20 off at 6 (in Commack)
11/21 off
11/22 off
11/27 off
11/28 off at 6 (in Commack)
11/29 off.
so basically, I'll be around those towns on those days after those times. I'm willing to go further on my days off...

Hi all, I'm Ruth. This is my fourth year in the NaNo game, and hopefully it will be the second time I actually make it to the 50k mark (fingers crossed). I still have no clue what I'm going to be writing about, but I plan to be sneaky and use NaNo to help write my thesis. I'm just happy that I'm actually going to be on LI for all of November this year.
I'm a grad student at Stony Brook, so I'd be happy to carpool with other car-less SB students to write-ins or meet up on campus somewhere (I'm fairly sure there is a starbucks in the union). Nanomail me if you'd like to do a SB meet up and/or carpool.
