I tend to write to whatever's on in the background - my music mainly consists of rock and metal, which is not your typical writing playlist, but I find it really inspiring.
Instrumental pieces, or ones with quieter vocals, are normally better for me though. I have too many songs that I love! When they come on I just have to sing along... luckily, I have just brought Porcupine Tree's new album, and I think that will be perfect.

I always have trouble writing to music because I tend to sing along and get distracted. I might have a go at writing to some music without lyrics but at the mo all I have is the WALL-E soundtrack and some greek music. It might spawn some interesting passages though!
I usually go with sound tracks, mainly Game, Anime, and Some Movies. But then I'm also bit of a fan of Chip Tunes, and More with Synths. (Chip Tunes? Think Beep and Bloops, like the NES and GameBoy. Like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1WWpKEPdT4 (Apologies for the choice of Track, but I wanted a track that most people knew.))
I find it almost impossible to write to music with any lyrics, so I have quite a few movie soundtracks and piano pieces that I listen to. But quite often I just write in silence, it's easier!
I generally listen to CrossRhythms radio station when I'm on the computer, so I do that when I'm writing, unless they have an interview on and then I just cannot concentrate. Other than that, I listen to what would probably be considered just about the most random mix of music, although I struggle to write without because I'm rarely writing somewhere where it's actually properly quiet.

Well, I'll most likely be writing to whatever music I feel accentuates and brings out the best quality within me at the time...
So if there's a lull in the story where I'm describing a scene, it could be Classic FM, or Newton Faulkner, and if I want something a bit more up tempo, like I'm about to describe something pacey and snappy, it might be Green Day, Nickelback or even Metallica (depending on what kind of point I want to make in the story, lol!).

"Baldrick, you wouldn't see a subtle plan if it painted itself purple and danced naked on top of a harpsichord, singing "Subtle plans are here again!"
When I'm writing, I mainly listen to two bands that I don't like that much, Stars and The Higher. Something about their music helps me to write quickly, though! Conversely, I write badly when listening to my much-loved Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack, and I write really slowly when listening to Queen (<3). Why? Who can say...?
This is when I break out my three Endura CDs (mostly instrumental and quite boring so I can tune them out). I can't write to real songs.
For the person who likes chiptunes, I bet OCremix.org would be your kind of thing. They have orchestral, instrumental versions of some video game soundtracks; that could be suitable writing soundtrack.
Oh wow, that's a toughie. I usually listen to music while I write, on a slightly lower volume than normal. Usually I compile a playlist of my favourite songs, inspiring songs, and any recent music I've acquired and don't quite have out of my system yet (i.e. I tend to put new songs on repeat at least 30 times before my mind stops playing them like a broken record 24/7). These playlists can include anything from rap to metal to rock to alternative to pop to dance to jpop and jrock and even a bit of Disney!
And then there are the times I get bored of lyrics or feel a particular scene or chapter fits with the a scene in a movie and then I listen to movie scores (i.e. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers, Pride and Prejudice, Twilight, etc...)
It really depends on my mood.
Right now I'm really obsessing over Muse and the Fray, Coldplay, and U2.

I tend to listen to ambient industrial when I write.
Like Zentriert Ins Antlitz or Totakeke.
I tend to work to things a little bit noisier but for some reason I really can't write to it - So the happy medium I find in the above works for me.
Oh the soundtrack to American McGee's Alice is marvelous to write to as well.

I've actually made a soundtrack to my story XD It just helps me get the idea of what the characters are like and what the overall feel should be.

Quite a lot of trance tracks, some bits of soundtrack, a lot of J-rock (try singing along in Japanese!), some Pink Floyd and some Guns and Roses.
I can write to anything really but this year I've tried to go for a playlist that reflects the mood of the book I want to write.
