Anyone got a plot yet? Even an outline? Although I suppose we do have a few weeks to go before panic-time...
I was going to be writing something set in my long-plotted and well-wiki'ed fantasy world, from the point of view of a character I'm quite fond of, and who it struck me lately would be the perfect protagonist. That's the one currently listed in my profile...
But the other day I had a sudden inspiration based partly on a dream a few weeks ago, and had the idea for a SF novel called 'Blue is the Colour of My True Love's Hair'... and now I'm torn.
Play it safe and go with my well-thought-out piece, or wing it completely and write something completely off-the-wall? (Why am I even asking myself this - it /is/ NaNoWriMo, after all!)
How about the rest of you?

I'm writing a paranormal YA novel about vampire hunters. The characters have been knocking around in my head for two years now, despite my best efforts to ignore them, so I figured I might as well let them have a go, since they are awfully stubborn, bless them.
As for which I think you should write, I'd try for the first one to begin with and keep the second as a back up, just in case. Or, you could do what I'm thinking of doing and write one of them as your main NaNo, and then if you have time left over when you've reached your word quota for the day on that one, work on your second one, but in a more relaxed manner so that you don't go completely mental.

Oooh, that's a good idea, JayElleBee - I didn't even think of doing both. Although I know a lot of people out there do write more than one novel during November.
Note to normal, sane people: accomplishing one novel during November is more than enough! You don't have to go the extra mile (or 10,000 words) unless you think you can/really want to push yourself.
I was trying to think of what 'extra' goal I could have for this year though - last year's was to complete the whole story as well as getting my 50k. I've done 50k enough times now that I know I can, and I like the additional bit of challenge. So writing Story #1 and then veering off onto #2 whenever my brain needs a break is a most excellent idea.
I think the second story's got a better title though, so that one can go into my profile. :)

@Farfalla : I had a similar dilemma last month. I first wanted to do my Nano rebel and continue Red Hot Moon (my last year's novel) because I wrote only half of what I had in mind. Then a sci-fi story I had in my head since 2006 kept pushing its way back into my mind, begging me to write it even though I only have a vague plot and very shadowy characters. I hesitated too much between playing it safe (though it looks much more cheating in my case) and writing something off-the-wall - and the sci-fi story won. Yet, I'm thinking of going back to Red Hot Moon if all else fails with that one.
So what's the sci-fi story's about ? Most of my inspiration came from listening Muse's Black Holes and Revelations. I felt like writing a story that would take place on Mars in the far future... in a Earthian settlement that turned into a immense city where the people are constantly dumbed down and under control... the main character would stumble into something (a person or an event) that's actually part of a large conspiracy and as he/she seeks the truth, underground resistance is organised against the current regime... The area of Cydonia (made famous by the "face of Mars" pictures) would play a major role. Sounds pretty much like your classical dystopian futuristic premise (something has read 1984 too much with The Matrix playing in the background), but it's just the skeleton. I'm still working on the flesh - the characters, the events, the settings, etc.

This is my synopsis:
"Floating in space, vast beyond comprehension, the ancient dark gods slumber, their bodies home to an evil slave race, indulging their passions for intrigue and twisted science, while maintaining the vital functions of their god in preparation for the imminent awakening. Meanwhile two small lab animals discover the incredible strength to be drawn from love."
That's been the idea I've had in mind for a couple of months now, but I'll wait until 11:59pm on Oct 31st before I start planning any more than that.

Hee, Larys, one of the albums on my 2007 NaNo soundtrack was that Muse one, and Knights of Cydonia had a big influence on bits of the story - although in a completely different way to what it's doing to yours. :)
You can plan as much as you like before Nov 1st, antongully - just no writing. Many people do use October as a chance to outline their novel, build their world, and do research. It saves time, so that when November comes, you can just concentrate on churning out the words.

I'm being immensely predictable and boring and continuing my Fantasy sequence. Basically this year I'm planning on doing the book 3 that I was supposed to do last year before I segued into a 45,000+ word flashback that will have to be fitted into book one after a bit of reworking.
I have a couple of other ideas but I've already proved to myself that I can write what I want during November but unfortunately I've also proved I can't write this particular story outside of the pressure of NaNo. Some would consider it being a bit of a rebel but the books are all supposed to be stand alone as part of the over all sequence.
Yes the stories build on each other but with gaps of several years between them and so far only 1 character spilling over (a couple more this year) they are sequels rather that continuations...

I'm going to be writing a suspense horror story that has undertones of something very real and disturbing throughout. It's going to be a bit 'Stephen King meets George Orwell'... at least I hope so. I don't think what I have planned has really been done before so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to make it work. Sorry for not being able to give away more than that but that is part of the fun of writing suspense!
