Yes, I could click on every single person in this forum and see under the novel tab, but instead, anyone want to share here what sort of story you're planning on writing? I tend to remember people not by names or usernames, but by what they're writing. Even if you don't have a blurb, why not take a few minutes to write a few sentences? Here's mine:
title: Among the Saer
genre: YA science fiction
When seventeen-year-old Sarah Eaton unwittingly witnesses a fight between two warriors with strange powers and rescues twelve-year-old apprentice Thennison Padisi, she is drawn into the business of the Saer Guardians. An ancient order charged with guarding the connections between worlds and keeping caemon (ordinary people) from stumbling through them, a betrayal has left Thenny's master dead, their mission incomplete, and Thenny and Sarah the only witnesses to the existence of an illegal Saer group bent on a coup.
To infiltrate the sedition, Sarah dresses as a Saer Master, with Thenny posing as her apprentice but actually instructing and aiding her in using Saer technology. They two travel to the Saer headquarters to find the murderer and expose the conspirators.

i have a blog where i'm posting everything i write :o.
i haven't chosen which of the ideas on there i'll write yet.
here's the first synopsis from the site:
The first idea I've thought about developed one time when I was walking from a Psychology class. I turned to Mary Beth (then my Fiancee, now my Wife), and asked her: "What do you think it would be like if you were a POW and were tortured by your allies? Wouldn't that mess you up? What if you got rescued, told your story, and were told that you had imagined it, or were under the influence of drugs? What if you couldn't tell? Would you want revenge?" She gave me a funny look, and told me I was weird. "I bet i could write about it," I said, more to myself than her. Now, that was a little under a year ago. The idea has bugged me since then, and every once in a while, I start writing it, and it always changes a bit.The final form of the idea is this: A man is in the armed forces, and gets captured and taken prisoner. Over the course of five (more or less) years, he is tortured, mentally and physically. One by one, he sees his comrades killed brutally. Then, he wakes up one day to find himself in a hospital, alongside each of his dead comrades. They've been rescued from the POW camp. The man, (let's call him James for now) tells his story to someone (Reporter, perhaps), and that someone politely suggests that James has suffered enough that he's been broken mentally, and that he should get counseling.
All of the POWs receive Purple Hearts (along with other medals), and James fades out of the spotlight within months. living alone, he becomes obsessed with his comrades. he absolutely knows that those people are not the ones that he served with.
He tries to convince people that the POWs are really the foreigners, come to terrorize the nation. He is advised to resume counseling. More months pass, and he is feeling better, largely due to the medication he's on. then he has a dream: In the POW camp, his friends are getting tortured and killed, just as if in reality. the enemy takes on their identity, and the only way he can stop them is to hunt them down and kill them.
When he wakes up, he realizes the incongruity of the dreams, but the seed is planted, and yet another obsession begins.
Will he hunt them? kill them? or will he be stopped? I don't know
I've changed my mind about my book idea, i'll reply to this thread when i've got a synopsis written.

I have a blurb/synopsis thing. My inspiration for my story is actually my apartment complex and how some days I just sit in my chair, talking on my computer with friends and outside I see the other people walking around and in my head I make up characters for them. SO, I've come up with a very strange story. Instead of one person falling into a different world, I've brought another world, or at least some, to ours.
Title: Poe 261
Genre: Fantasy
Moving into an apartment can be fun and exciting, meeting new people, seeing new places. But for Victoria Lune, moving in isn’t all fun and games, with a monster in the pool, a pirate for a next door neighbor, a mad scientist in the bathroom. Things don’t stay quiet for long when a rival apartment complex across the street declares war. It’s a dog eat scurvy dog story. One can always expect an adventure at Poe Terrace.
I've come up with a group of rather colorful characters, who I love dearly. And I'm still working the kinks out of the MC, I want her to be more likable. The group of misfit people are from a post apocalyptic time (They are from a world where pirates, witches and scientists were normal in the same location...a place with technology and magic, but the world kinda went boom so they've regressed back to the 1800s style of dress and living, having bits of older technology here and there that only few know how to use.)
Anyway...that's what I have so far...hope it's not too boring.

Wow, I like to have a plan. I'd have trouble having no idea where I was going, but I know some people are good at that. Since it sounds like your idea sounds character driven, Televangelon, I guess you'll discover who he is along with him. ;) It sounds like a pretty intense story.
I don't think that sounds boring at all, Kokotankuu. Sounds like it has a lot of humor. I've written a couple of humor fantasy children's novels myself in previous nanowrimo years and had a fantastic time doing them. I bet you'll have a lot of fun. Is it aimed at adults, teenagers, or kids? I have a special love for kids books, although it sounds hilarious any way you look at it.

My novel is going to be dreadfully cliche, which is just as well because I'm a pretty rotten writer - I'm just doing it for the fun of it. And darn it, I'd really like to win!!
Title: Untitled Thus far - But I'm sure it'll be appropriately ominous.
Genre: Cross-over Fantasy thing
I have no awesomely clever summary, though I am going to work on one because I think it would help me get things a little more organized. My story is going to be about a woman, Kora, who wakes up in completely unknown place and is saved by some people who turn out to be battling "the man". Kora, who cannot remember anything, though bits and pieces come back over time, joins their cause due to the kindness showed and a sheer lack of having nothing better to do.
Eventually she figures out that not is all as she anticipated, huge/cliche story twist in there at this point and everything goes topsy turvey, especially as she remembers how and why she got there in the first place.
BLAM!
Yeah. That's all. : )

Kokotankuu, PLEASE let me read that story as you write it. Oh please! It sounds like SO MUCH FUN.
I've got a story idea...
Title: I Only Realized I Have a Story Three Days Ago and a Title is Too Much to Ask Right Now.
Genre: Fantasy/Adventure
It started with me having way more nightmares that usual. The story formed after that from a combination of surreal life experiences, bits of the nightmares I've had, late-night 'what if' scenarios, and nostalgia for some good old-fashioned monster stories.
Adrian, like the rest of the world, has been having horrible nightmares more and more often. When spending her summer touring Europe she agrees to participate in a street performer's act, and it turns into the most terrifying moment of her life. She learns that nightmares are more than just byproducts of stress and bad wine, and that just because it's a dream doesn't mean she's not in danger. When things don't return to normal when she goes home and she starts seeing nightmares creeping into real life, she enters the dreamworld, a darker place than she ever imagined, and joins the fight against the darkness that threatens to end everything.

If you're writing for yourself, I don't see anything wrong with cliches. They exist because people enjoy those sorts of scenes/events, and so I figure when we write for ourselves we might as well write what we enjoy.
Besides, if you pull it off well enough that no one cares it's cliche, it becomes an archetype instead. %-)

I don't yet...just found out about NANOWRIMO today and spent the day reading about it and thinking about how I don't know a thing about the mechanics of writing anything as large as a novel...assuming that since I think of ideas I don't write down all the time...sometime between now and Nov 1 I will think of an idea again and go with it.

I've still not decided, but it will likely be another in the series I'm working on, about a disgraced female cop who supports herself fixing problems/solving issues for people. Her methods aren't always traditional and she is great at rationalizing her behavior when it's not quite ... kosher. Iris, utterly clueless about men's attraction to her in general, is dating a mystery man who might be married or might be mafia. Or both. Her best friends are a brutally competent, fashion-plate assistant coroner and an granola-muffin, rescue-me-princess cook extraordinaire. Somebody's always in hot water, and Iris feels obligated to fish them out. Once in awhile, she even gets beer money out of the deal.

That's the point of NaNoWriMo--to make you NOT worry about the "mechanics" of writing a novel. You just sit down, shut up, and write! You really do just need to think of something and go with it. :) ----------

A man wants a method of power that doesn't rely on magic. He wants to find a way to harness the power of nature without drawing power from himself.
Fast-forward 200 years-science is a magical art and magic is a scientific process. Both are intertwined thanks to that man. Magic is a blunt instrument, relying on power more than precision, much like a mace. Technology is a blade, designed to work precisely, like a dagger.
Near the anniversary of the discoveries of that man, a priest rises from the ranks of those in his Monastery to prophesy a war between two countries-one that will destroy humanity.
On one side is Sharnaan, a forested country run by a Council of Wise Men. On the other side is Rim, an urban country ruled by a rotating democracy-a party of four rulers, each equal in power, under one Monarch that must be selected by the four rulers.
The Monastery of the Four Mountains is home to seers and prophets. The prophecies that are brought forth are analyzed by the seers to ensure their accuracy. The Final Days prophecy is interpreted and chronicled. Two emissaries are to be sent to each country to attempt to avert this war.
Beyond both countries is the Island of Monua. Here, a man prepares to initiate the war to come.
(The novel will be told mostly from the perspective of Jean, a potential recruit into the Sharnaan Mage's academy. He is also spoken of in the prophesy, though the seers are unsure who he is and why he is spoken of)

Yes, her name is Iris. How funny we both have protagonists with that name! The brothel Iris works at is called The Garden and the madame (named Rose) gives all the girls names of flowers or plants when they're hired. It's a mystery so I'm toying with the idea of having another prostitute named Fern be the Watson to Iris' Holmes.

Title: n/a
Genre: This is far more action/adventure than I am used to writing, but it will contain some elements of fantasy and sci-fi as well.
Plot: Khidar is a country torn by war. It must be rebuilt. With all the royal family murdered, the last servant of the royal house must find other worthy individuals to rebuild the tiny once rich land which has turned despondent and poor. Can people be found before the country is destroyed and split up?
Protagonist(s): A resource manager from a mid-level company who is absolutely amazing at finding anything. An organization specialist working in the same firm attends as his sidekick. Once into the new 'job' the resource manager will find his true calling, that of being a leader instead of a follower. The specialist will find that he can inspire the people who remain to protect themselves. He will form an army from the remnants of the population.
Antagonist(s): Country 1 and Country 2 (no names yet)
Complications: A type of east vs. west kind of thing, The war was instigated and fought between the countries on either side of Khidar. Khidar has been completely demoralized by the stripping that country 1 & 2 indulged in. The resource manager must figure out the intricacies of 'ruling' an entire country no matter how small it may be before the two countries realize that Khidar is back on it's feet, and take the opportunity to strike again.
Plot origin: Khidar is actually an Arabian horse I wrote a "legend" about for a class. The sheik who owns the horse allowed me to use the image of this fantastic stallion to illustrate the story because he really liked the legend I wrote. I will use the legend in the story, but the resource manager and specialist will privately scoff at the legend, until they realize it's true importance to the People.

Hm... maybe I should actually post one on my profile... I wasn't even thinking about that.
My idea is one that I've been thinking of for the past year and may be cliche, but who cares? A teen guy graduates from high school and decides to see what's out there. He hops a freight train not caring where it's going and winds up in Roseville. Eventually he makes his way to San Francisco, where he meets a new-age hippie with a Volkswagen and they begin a cross-country road trip to New York. Along the way they meet very interesting and not-so-interesting characters, each with his or her own outlook on life and what it means.
It's one of those search-for-self stories, with the obligatory love interest probably thrown in around Denver, but I still haven't decided what route they're taking.

Title: In Bob We Trust
Genre: Probably mainstream fiction
Painfully average Bob never really expected anything too remarkable to happen in his life. He figured that he would simply be born, marry, procreate and die like millions of others on earth. Unfortunately, Bob's illusion of a dull life is shattered when he wanders into a psychic on the street who foresees that he is a God of an unknown religion. With meddling parents, angry church-goers, avid followers and, yes, even a psychiatrist Bob slowly uncovers truths about faith, religion, life and perhaps even a little about love.

Wow, so many exciting different ideas. Makes me want to read them all.
Sorceress, I love the name Khidar. It's really pretty. Your plot sounds really exciting. I'm going to have a lot of politics in mine as well I think. I don't feel very good at them but I do enjoy reading them when its done well, so I'm going to try my best.
Rails, if you do it brilliantly, it'll just be archetypal instead of cliche. Go with it. ;) Nothing wrong with coming of age as a theme. I'm always fond of it.
And Baily, I seem to recall reading a book non-fiction satirical book about religion where they decided to create one where God was a guy named Bob, who's mission it was to promote "slack", ie relaxation. I guess it's pretty popular in some circles with various rock bands. Is your book based on that satirical one? Or are you making up your own religion entirely? Either way, it sounds hilarious.

Minor snippet of plot. Nothing really on paper, but I've had the story floating in my head for three weeks now.
November 1st, 2009. Nobody knows how or why, but the Eye of God descended upon the world on that day. Some say it was his way of watching our final days. Others say it was his blessing to make our wildest dreams come true.
Regardless, this was the day we had waited for.
