This year, I'm putting up an extra challenge for myself during NaNo. Not only shall I write at least 50,000 words for my NaNo2009 novel, I will also write a minimum of 5,000 words in a Deutschminiroman! (that is, a German mini novel). I've been studying German for a while, so I'm hoping I can string together enough words to make something that makes sense, no matter what it is.
Anyone else going for a bit of an extra challenge this year?
Anyone know a lot (or a little) German? I'd love to have someone who can read my rambling writing.

I've never attempted a full novel, much less writing one in a month. I think it'll probably be enough challenge for me, but I might pop a few pictures books that have been rattling around in my head for awhile now.

I don't know any German, sorry, Tim. :)
I like the idea of this thread, but definitely trying to write a novel of 50,000 words is enough challenge for just about anyone (and much more than most people can handle!). Valuable side goals to have include drinking more coffee than the human body can stand, attempting to write in every cafe in Waterloo, sampling a different type of cookie for every 5000 words written, and trying not to COMPLETELY alienate friends and family with talk of Nano (moderate alienation is fine).
In addition to those noble goals, I was thinking of trying to edit the remainder of last year's Nano novel (about half left) while writing the new one, but I don't want to psych myself out of the Nano mindset with editing, so I'm not sure how to go about that. Maybe it's not a good challenge to undertake. :) But I don't want to end up with a new novel longer than last year's, which came in over 100K.

My extra challenge is keeping up with schoolwork while doing NaNo ;)
as for German, I moved here from Germany ten years ago, so I'm fluent and I can give you a hand if you like

Haha! Yeah, I'm in the above situation too. Plenty of universty papers and assignments due in Novemeber, as well as keeping up 2 steady jobs.
I'm crazy enough to take on a 50,000 word novel, but send my kudos to, Trafuse, for taking on the extra work. Keep us posted on how it turns out.

That would be fantastic Enkanowen. I could really use the practice in both speaking and writing.

Working a full-time job that often extends far beyond 9-5 and being in school part-time while attempting Nano is enough of a challenge for me!

My extra challenge, other than being a first time Wrimo, is to keep up with school, find a job, and learn Mandarin all at the same time, it's going to be interesting. But I'm thinking (depending on how well this one goes) that my novels, at least for a while, will be a series, but at the same time, I may just take the 50 000 words, and after the month is over, make it closer to 100 000, but more casually. I don't know if that is sacrilegious or anything, but I ultimately would like to be a published author before my 20's that's a dream, not a goal, but maybe, because of Wrimo, it will become reality.
We'll see.

I'm in the exact same situation. Nano is going to be a huge challenge all by itself.
