Hey guys,
I'm a final year English Literature undergraduate at Northumbria Uni and was wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting up somewhere in the uni for writing sessions between lectures/seminars/tutorials/what-have-you. I'm usually in on a Tuesday and a Wednesday but since I need to spend quite a bit of time at the library I can arrange to be in other days too. Would anyone like to do that? We could maybe meet in the library basement or one of the building cafes - even Habita I suppose, although that might be a bit noisy.
Hah, this 50K thing will be easy - look how long it took me to ask if anyone wants to write with me!

English Lit alumni here, class of '08. Also former bar-minion of Habita (or Bar One, as I prefer to think of it) and Reds.
Wish I could come along to moan about essay deadlines and fritter away my student loan on caramel-mochas, but my library card doesn't work anymore and I don't think my boss would appreciate me sacking off to go down the union for a few pints.
Sigh =P

That's a shame :o( However, while I have you here, any tips for writing the dissertation?
By the way, were you ever taught by Kaye Kossick?

Tips.. pester your tutor at every opportunity? Getting them to look over your drafts is very handy. What are you writing about? :)
I managed to completely avoid Kaye the entire three years - had mostly Rosie White, Julie Scanlon, Phil O'Neil, Victoria Basin and the legendary David Walker (who I think is gone now?)

Nope, he's still there, but he's been promoted. I think he's head of Humanities now (we're not Arts and Social Sciences any more).
I've managed the following tutors:
Guidence tutor: Julie Scanlon
Replacement Guidence tutor while she's on sabattical: Rosie White
Canons: Kaye Kossick
Reading Poetry/Critical Concepts: Adam Hanson
US Culture: Victoria Basin/Mel Waters
Creative Writing: Pauline Plummer/Hughes
Professional Practice: Jon Robinson
Modernism and Modernity: David Stewart
Early Modern Cultures: Clark Lawlor
Writing the Body: Clark again
Eighteenth Century English Literature: Phillip O'Neill
Dissertation: Carolyn Jess-Cooke
I get someone else next semester too, which I think means there's only three tutors I haven't had for something or other, and all of them I've been taught by in lectures. I've manged to get through virtually the entire department in three years :o)

I am Final year CEIS student and just have a big interest in writing. I am up for some at uni writing sessions if we can get the numbers up. My timetable is a bit hectic on a Tuesday but I do have two hours 1:00pm through 3:00pm. Also obviously have all of Wed afternoons free. I have been trying to convince some other Computing Students to attempt the WriMo this year and might be able to drag a couple along.
A great place to have 'meetings' is Pandon Basement, not so quiet that you have to whisper but loud enough you can talk normally. Lots of seats at the entrance and most importantly plenty of outlets for Laptops!
I was enquiring about setting up a Creative Writing Society the other day if anyone is interested. I know the English Lit Society does 'open mic' nights but what I was proposing was a Society based solely around writing.

I forget that Wednesday afternoons are meant to be free. Mine haven't been up until this year, and I still have friends who have lectures on a Wednesday afternoon. But, yes, I'd be happy to meet up then.
Would we have to book the Pandon Basement or anything like that? I think the only time I've been there was for induction week a couple of years ago.
A creative writing society sounds fun, although you know we have The Slovo for actual submissions (I'm prose editor).

I think the Wednesdays free rule was introduced to try and get people to use the sports facilities.
Pandon basement is just one massive room with lots of computers but there is an area right at the front with seats and stuff, you have to grab them when you can but you do not need to book anything. Elison Building now has monitors outside of every room telling you if a room is free or not so that is a good fall back plan for somewhere quiet. If not one of the bars will do.
The Slovo? Is that more of a Arts thing or can anyone submit? I have not even heard of it over here in CEIS. What kind of stuff do you take? Sci-Fi/Fantasy etc or is more of a Journal?

My Wednesday afternoons aren't free; mind you, my timetable is such a mess this year that I'm amazed I know when I'm in and when I'm not.
I'm in my final year of studying Media Production. I heard about the open mic night thing, but though I asked for more information about it I haven't heard anything since. It seems a shame there isn't something more creatively based.
I would be interested in meeting up, though I'm not too sure about Habita; it can get really crowded and noisy. The Pandon basement appeals more, though there I can see chat being discouraged ...
I managed to pick up the first issue of Slovo, but I haven't seen it since. I liked the creative writing in it, but I was disappointed to find that more than half of the issue was given over to reviews of a film. It seemed like a bit of a waste.

Anyone can submit - I'm surprised that you haven't heard of it, but then again I'm not on the advertising team, so I have no idea how far they threw the net :o) At any rate, anything is welcome: reviews, poetry, prose. We accept artwork too, to go on the front cover and so on. Email any submissions you have to creativewritingmagazine@hotmail.co.uk.
I'm quite happy to head over to Pandon basement early afternoon-ish on a Wednesday. Shall we maybe wait until we get going, see how many people are involved, and then fix a date/time?

Film reviews seem to have tapered off a bit since the first issue - I'm not sure why. The second issue came out just before the summer break; try the SASC office if you'd like a copy. I don't know if they still have it, but it's worth a shot if you're interested.

Interesting. I think the netting must have ran out by the time it reached the computing department. heh.
I am thinking of writing something for the 'Wannabe Writers' call for pieces of creative writing for next years prospectus http://www.northumbria.ac.uk/wannabe/ I always find the tone to get right when writing for things like this however so will give it a shot.
Going to try to get a couple of shorts written and try them with you at the Slovo as well, any restrictions as far as genre goes etc?
I think a good time to meet up will be mid november time once we have all got started and managed to work out a way to fit 50,000 words into out normal uni work load. I have quite a few assignements due the next couple of weeks so trying to get as much done before the 1st :D

No genre restrictions whatsoever. I'll check out that bit for the prospectus too - it looks interesting.
I'll try to organise something mid-November. I've just had a load of assignments in (three on the 28th) and have another two due on the 3rd December, so the middle of November will be my happy time :D
