Hi everybody,

I'm a librarian at the Main Dayton Metro Library downtown, and we've had a lot of interest in fiction writing programs, so one of my coworkers and I planned a series timed to lead up to the start of NaNoWriMo. Unfortunately with the restart of the forums on October 1st, I didn't get back here in time to spread the word about the all day workshop on the 3rd, but hopefully our remaining programs will go just as well.

First, there's a one evening fiction writing advice program coming up on Wednesday, October 14, 6:30-8, in the meeting room off of the AV department. We'll have Brady Allen, a lecturer on Creative Writing and Great Books from WSU, as our presenter. He has published crime, horror, dark fantasy, magical realism and other strange things like that. For more information about him you can check out http://www.bradyallen.com.

Second, we're having a party here at Main in the auditorium for the second evening of NaNoWriMo, Nov. 2nd (of course) 5:30-8:30. Technically this is open to anybody whether they are attempting NaNoWriMo or just want a friendly place to write in the evening, but it's deliberately a few weeks away from the other programs in the series so that we'd be safely into November. We'll have food and prizes, some of which will be given out for word count and others which will just be door prizes. We've gotten donations from Barnes & Noble, Half Price Books, Boston Stoker, and Kroger. There are outlets in the room to charge laptops.

Lastly, if any of you saw earlier editions of the flyer for the series which included a self publishing program that would have been last night, we are sorry that it had to be cancelled due to the furlough day. The presenter for that one is one of the other librarians on staff here, so we know where he is and hopefully we can reschedule it at some point in the future.

Thanks, Deivyd, for giving me permission to share all this.

Thanks for posting this! I really wanted to make it to the first program, but my sitter fell through. I hope I can make it on Wednesday and definitely to the party. :)

Sorry for sounding like a dork, but.., being completely new to the gem city's night charms and knowing absolutely nothing about your emporium...

Is this at WSU? or Main Library.. directions to the library? the room?

Can I get a street address, parking instructions.

If I'm walking through Dayton to this from parking at night, is it safe? etc.

How early do you want us there?
thanks , Kai

Dayton Metro Library, 215 E. 3rd Street Dayton OH 45402

It's all street parking around the library. I wouldn't go roaming that neighborhood at three in the morning, but you ought to be fine parking there from 5:30 to 8:30. North Dayton really isn't as dangerous as Channel 7 would like you to believe. ;)

Yes, that's the place. Like I said in my first post: Main Library, 5:30-8:30 for the party on the 2nd. If you're coming to Brady Allen's program on October 14, that's 6:30-8.

On a further parking related note, all of the meters around the library are only active until 6:00 on Monday-Friday, so you should only put in enough to cover you until then and you won't have to worry about going out to feed them. And the neighborhood around the library isn't anything I bother worrying about during our operating hours.

If you can walk in and out/go with a friend it's better. Don't leave valuables obvious out in your car because there are car break-ins down there and I do speak from experience. Avoid walking through the grassy park area and stay more to the street. You may hit some beggars asking for money. It's not the worst area, but it does have some problems, mostly car break-ins. Don't carry a big purse or a large bulging wallet, either. Just being practical here.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! From what I could tell by the evaluations, it sounded like everybody had a good time.

As an FYI and as a former patron of the library, I can say with absolute certainty that parking at the meters will fill up quick especially as people who live nearby get off work/go to the library/take advantage of the fact that the meters don't charge after 6. Be prepared to circle the block a couple of times, or look for parking in a few nearby lots. There are a few lots that aren't terribly far away. I guess the warning is...leave plenty of time to find parking especially if you're not familiar with the area.

(And when I say former patron...it's cause I moved, not because I don't like the library....I'm a big fan of libraries!)
