In the spirit of friendly competition, we have challenged my old region of Denver, Colorado, to a word war. And we are going to TROUNCE THEM, AM I RIGHT?
...er. I mean. Friendly competition! Friendly!
Over the course of the month, I'll be posting in this thread with updates about how we're doing against our transatlantic rivals, so that those of you who feel like you a have a few hundred extra words in you can see if they're needed to keep us going. Since Denver is a much larger, older, and more active region than Glasgow, we'll be doing this based on average words per writer, so every little bit you write counts! I have faith in you guys to make this really fun and exciting for us. We have a write-in in a castle, remember? So we automatically get to be cooler anyway!
Glaswegians, start your word warring engines!

Its about writing as much as you can so the average word count beats Denver :) (sorry Sabrina!)
We dont expect you to write excessively more than you would normally but its a way to keep motivated and show them over the river (big river) we are better than them! We must be - we took their ML :)

this'll motivate me to write. i feel like a baby here so i can't make it to write ins, but maybe this'll work just as good in upping my word count.

That's the spirit! Participate however you can! *Insert cheerleaders with pompoms and backflips here*
...actually, there's a thread in here as well for other things people would like to see the region do during NaNo to help everyone out...if you think of anything that might help keep you motivated as well, since you can't make the write-ins, be sure to let us know, 'kay?

So, would I be correct in assuming that as long as my profile location is set to Glasgow I will be contributing to the Word War?
Also, shouldn't we have challenged Denver to a letter count instead? I was considering "Awayan'boilyaheidyajakey" as my first sentence, but that now seems like a poor opening salvo for this conflict.

Awww, but that would be unfair! You guys put extra letters in "color" and "favorite" and things like that over here! :(
(It's okay. I looked at some of the word counts from last year before the site reset, and I think we can take 'em!)

Hey guys! We're two days into NaNo, which means both us and Denver have one full day and change under our belts, so here's the first update on the word war!
Total word count for Denver: 544,449 words
Total word count for Glasgow: 291,537 words
But remember, we're doing AVERAGE word counts due to the discrepancy in the region sizes, so the actual winners at present are:
Average word count for Glasgow: 3,181 words
Average word count for Denver: 2,441 words
GO GLASGOW GO!

Cassandra, don't worry...this one's kind of an everyone-in thing; we're just checking the word count scoreboard every couple of days to see the average total for the region and going by that! So as long as you write something, it still counts!

Total word count for Denver: 1,723,058 words
Total word count for Glasgow: 520,986 words
But since we're going by average, the winners are:
Average word count for Glasgow: 4,961 words
Average word count for Denver: 3,988 words
So we're still beating them by about 1,000 per person, but they're catching up! Come on, guys, keep writing!

Sorry for slacking with this...I was fighting off illness after Guy Fawkes day (not used to so much smoke!) and then the site had its down time, but here's where we stand with Denver so far!
Total word count for Denver: 5,497,961 words
Total word count for Glasgow: 1,499,970 words
But since we're judging the winners by average words written:
Average word count for Glasgow: 11,627 words per writer
Average word count for Denver: 9,748 words per writer
Also, while we have the same number of winners per region (one apiece so far), Glasgow's got a higher percentage of writers beyond the halfway point already, and more writers keeping up above the on-pace goal so far as well! (That took a bit of time to figure out, whew!) You guys are AWESOME!

Time differences mean that posting this weekly makes a bit more sense. But anyway, here's how we're doing against Denver going into Week 3!
Total word count for Denver: 8,926,557 words
Total word count for Glasgow: 2,276,135 words
But since we're judging the winners by average words written:
Average word count for Glasgow: 15,104 words per writer
Average word count for Denver: 16,986 words per writer
So we're still about 2,000 words ahead but Denver's slowly starting to close the gap! Come on, Glasgow, let's show them that we're like the little region that could and keep it up! ^_^.

But since we're judging the winners by average words written:
Average word count for Glasgow: 22,861 words per writer
