Every year, we pick some questions that give people an opportunity to introduce themselves to the group in a way that's a little more fun than "Um, hi... I'm Joyce... and er... I write?"
Because we've got to get back into the habit of 'filler' somehow... ;)
Copy and paste (or quote) the questions into a reply and go...
(With sincere apologies to those who answered before the forum wipe and have to do it again - hopefully you remember what you said...*grin*)

ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
More than likely copious amounts of WoW & XBox Live with my fiance. That's about all "date night" consists of these days with the distance.
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves? I generally make it a habit not to, though I will use interesting personality quirks.
C) Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all?
The only ones that read the WIP are my best friend for Beta purposes, and my fiance because he'd annoy the crap out of me otherwise.

10) What kind of characters do you like to write? I like archetypes. Either played straight or fiendishly subverted
11) Favorite Self-Bribery Mechanism (PG-13 please): Is beer PG-13? As long as I don't share, right?
12) Favorite Music to Write To: Depends on what I'm writing. I tend to write a lot of action, which calls for high energy metal.
13) Favorite Place to Write: The Second Cup on Edmonton
14) Favorite Procrastination Method: Does this have to be PG-13 too? I guess I'll just say Internet then. And beer.
15) Best Nano Moment: Occurred off-season. Realising that my first 50k win is now at around 73k and might actually be finished someday.

ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?: I don't know when it will be, but it will almost certainly involve beer.
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves?: I've based a couple of characters on myself, which is even more shameful. Mostly, though, my characters either grow naturally in the uncharted depths of my diseased mind, or get ripped off of my RPG characters.
C) Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all?: I tend to post my progress online, so friends, family and complete strangers can read them.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.: That is always my plan, at least at the beginning. It has only remained the plan with one of my works so far. I use NaNo as something of a proving ground for ideas. If, after 50,000 words, the idea is still alive and fit for development, then it is consider a book in progress.
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?: I have recently realised that many of my ideas get their start in those weird morning dreams you get just before the alarm goes off and in between whacks of the snooze button. I just got one yesterday in fact, and it is possibly the most messed up thing I've ever considered writing.

4) Years Done Nano: This will be my third year.
5) Years Won Nano: I won my first year, although I did AugNoWriMo this past summer and won that too.
6) Number of Friends Recruited Into Nano: I almost got a friend to do AugNo last summer . . . xD
7) Technology / Method of Writing: Just my desktop, although it would be fantastic to have a lap top.
8) Genre: Fantasy.
9) Title (if known): Oh, I'm terrible with finding titles for my novels.
10) What kind of characters do you like to write? Mostly just sassy, sarcistic, witty females and vapid, dopey teenage boys.
11) Favorite Self-Bribery Mechanism (PG-13 please): Chocolate. Lots and lots of chocolate.
12) Favorite Music to Write To: Usually piano, or really just anything that fits the mood that I'm writing in.
13) Favorite Place to Write: In my room, but I can only do longhand there since I don't have a computer there.
14) Favorite Procrastination Method: The Internet.
15) Best Nano Moment: I have yet to have it. ;)
16) Worst Nano Moment: When I realized that I wouldn't get through last year, I suppose.
17) Funniest Nano Moment (if not above): In my first year, when there was about ten thousand words left in five days. My characters get drunk and sang 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall three consecutive times, and then got sucked into this alternate universe where they were slayed by some sort of evil bird. My novel wasn't fantasy that year, by the way.
18) Hobbies / Volunteering Outside Nano: Piano, and reading. Pretty much.
19) What's your 'day job'? (Or your major, if you're in school.): I'm an academic major, which really isn't saying anything. I have no idea what I want to do after school. Some people know exactly what they're doing and practically have the next ten years planned out, and I don't even know what I'm doing in the next ten minutes.
20) Have you ever been published (and/or do you want to be)?: Well, I wrote for the school newspaper last year (which was a bad, bad idea). And yeah, it would be pretty sweet to get published in the future.
21) Script Frenzy Veteran: Yeah, I attempted it two years ago.
22) Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders): Eh, I don't really think I have any good suggestions.
ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
I don't know, I guess I'll know when I get there. xP
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves?
Oh, I do this so much. I try to hide it, though.
C)Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done?
My friends/family never get to read my work. I always tell my mom that she can wait until I'm published, just like everyone else. She isn't very impressed.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.
Yeah, if all goes well.
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?:
From my dreams.
R) What has been the most boring character, in your opinion, you have ever created?:
Actually, I don't think I've ever really created a boring character. Well, not a boring major character, anyway. For me, if the character isn't at least remotely interesting, then I won't write about him/her.
S) What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever written?
----------To be a Pokémon master is my destiny.

7) Technology / Method of Writing: WriteRoom on my lappytop. Sometimes pen and paper when the mood/RSI strikes.
8) Genre: Uhhh... um. Hmm. I guess the default answer here is "fantasy".
9) Title (if known): The Undercurrent (subject to change in maybe another five minutes)
10) What kind of characters do you like to write?
- Jerks.
- People who are older/wiser/more interesting than I am, which usually fails, given that I have to interpret them anyway, ahahahaaaagh.
- Kinds of characters I have not tried writing before/failed to write decently.
11) Favorite Self-Bribery Mechanism (PG-13 please): These don't really work so well for me, but I will have to go with sleep and coffee. Not at the same time, mind you.
12) Favorite Music to Write To:
- Dark ambient. Giz me the hardest of drones and I am a happy camper.
- Sometimes space disco.
- Tracks that sound super-depressing.
13) Favorite Place to Write: Millennium Library, or a coffee house suited to the purpose, or home. All for different reasons.
14) Favorite Procrastination Method: Picking over my writing to check for inconsistencies, repeated words, and general obtuseness. Or lying around and staring at the ceiling.

16) Worst Nano Moment: Oh, there are a great many small despairing moments scattered hither and thither. I don't bother keeping track of them.
17) Funniest Nano Moment (if not above): I have to go with Chaos Hippy's answer. There are far, far too many for me to be selective here.
18) Hobbies / Volunteering Outside Nano:

- Being a huge nerd
19) What's your 'day job'? (Or your major, if you're in school.): I be a graphic designer for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection.
20) Have you ever been published (and/or do you want to be)?: No, and yes. We'll see how long it takes to get there. I'm not in a hurry, but it would be nice to have happen.
21) Script Frenzy Veteran: Aye, a co-written one a few years back. It featured evil penguins, bartender ninjas, and pirates, mostly/all in space.
22) Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders): Dudes, you're awesome already.
ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it? Planning ahead ruins the whole point! Ahaha.
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves? I used to do this, but they have long since decided to be their own people. Anyway, these days, new characters tend more to Athena outta Zeus, if you catch my meaning.
C) Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till you're done? Do they get to read them at all? They can read, if they want. Anybody can, as I generally post the chapters online as I write them (self-motivational tool). I don't listen to any feedback until the end of November, though. That's just unneeded noise while the month is going.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc. It's a story that figures into a much larger whole authored by me and my afore-mentioned pal, so we'll see.
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas? Lying around and staring at the ceiling, waiting for my brain to take a bizarre left turn. Either that, or babbling at people.
R) What has been the most boring character, in your opinion, you have ever created? Wow, let's see. A good many of them have wound up into my Nano messes. It's hard to narrow it down, anyhow.
S) What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever written? Oh goodness. I am not saying, and you can't make me. Nope.
T) Will NaNo affect your other writing? Will you start a blog to post your novel, give up your normal blogging, blog your frustrations and your successes? Will your papers be late because you're novel-ing? The other writing will go on, albeit at a somewhat reduced level, probably, like most years. All that I shall be blogging are my chapters as they are produced, I think.

ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
I actively write all year long, so if I do a play hooky day it will likely be spent working on other projects. But in all honesty I don't see my self doing this.
Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all?
I do get someone to read my outlines from time to time. I figure it is better to find a massive problem in advance then have to go back and make more changes. But once the project starts No gets to read it until its finished.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.
I just sent last years NANO to an editer, and plan to do something similiar with this years project.
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?:
I get ideas from all sorts of different places and scribble them down in a notebook that I carry with me everyewhere.
T) Will NaNo affect your other writing? Will you start a blog to post your novel, give up your normal blogging, blog your frustrations and your successes? Will your papers be late because you're novel-ing?
As much as I wish it wouldn't I know that NANO likely will affect other projects. Right now I'm working to get ahead of NANO so that everything is ready. in advance.

2) Hometown: I live in Winnipeg now.
3) Gender/Age (optional): I am of the female persuasion and of that age when a woman usually does not tell (although I was carded a few months ago - when you're actually twice the legal age is this still a compliment??)
4) Years Done Nano: 4 (this will be 5!)
5) Years Won Nano: 4 (although a couple times just by the hair on my chin and some really bad dream sequences that had nothing at all to do with the story)
6) Number of Friends Recruited Into Nano: 2, but I don't think either of them got very far.
7) Technology / Method of Writing: Laptop/flashdrive to work (but I only wriate at lunch)
8) Genre: I've done two fantasy and two mystery so far. For this fifth one I actually have no idea as of mid-October.
9) Title (if known): Not known - perhaps if I picked a title, I'd come up with a story idea??
10) What kind of characters do you like to write? Those with ordinary everyday flaws and problems.
11) Favorite Self-Bribery Mechanism (PG-13 please): Champagne, but not this year, so I'll say candy.
12) Favorite Music to Write To: Sibelius, Dvorak, Garth Brooks or the Rolling Stones
13) Favorite Place to Write: I just moved in to the house in August, so I don't know yet - but at home somewhere for sure.
14) Favorite Procrastination Method: Running the word count and filling out all those spreadsheets that tell me how many words I have to write today to be sure I finish on time.
15) Best Nano Moment: My first Nano win - it seemed so daunting the first time!
16) Worst Nano Moment: Adding riduculous dream sequences that did nothing for the plot just to up my word count.
17) Funniest Nano Moment (if not above): Telling my husband the story as it's going along while soaking in the hot tub every night. What seems natural as I write by myself sounds ridiculous when I try to explain it to someone else out loud.
18) Hobbies / Volunteering Outside Nano: Too many to mention. This year I'll be in my seventh month of pregnancy so that's sort of my hobby these days.
19) What's your 'day job'? (Or your major, if you're in school.): Engineering Manager
20) Have you ever been published (and/or do you want to be)?: Sort of, I guess. My name's on the cover of a little booklet you can buy on the internet - it was my idea but is a compilation of other people's submissions as well as my own. It was a fundraiser for a favourite website of mine.

22) Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders):
ADD A QUESTION:
Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all? I've only let family read one of my novels, but I'm not sure anyone actually took me up on the offer.

A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
Watch a lot of anime, or go out with friends.
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves?
I've only ever done this for NaNo, since I needed some 'ready made' characters, just borrowed some characteristics. It's never going to be read by anyone but me, so I didn't even change the names :P
C)Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all?
Nobody reads any of it, unless I ever get around to doing an edit...
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.
This year I'm hoping to do a thorough edit and hopefully try to make it into something I wouldn't mind sharing
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?:
I really have no idea ^^; Music tends to be very inspiring lately.
T) Will NaNo affect your other writing? Will you start a blog to post your novel, give up your normal blogging, blog your frustrations and your successes? Will your papers be late because you're novel-ing?
Usually I write with my friends, so that'll be on hold for this month and November. I'll continue blogging, about 'regular' life and NaNo, and I'll probably post snippets as I go. Have to stay on top of my school work, though, since it's my last year of high school XP

-November 26th 2007, I was just finishing the day of writing and checking when the grey cup was on as the blue bombers were playing! (I am a proud gal) and all my family was en route over to watch with me for my brithday! It was a huge party all around the grey cup! I am so happy and I was on the net and my computer, desktop at the time, just powers down. And I cried. I was like okay.... just the power supply I will fix it tomorrow. Well it was not, there was a surge or something the only thing that worked on that puter was a stick of ram the rest of it didn't work any more. It was a long life that puter had I have had it since I was 17 at that point and been through many upgrades! So I was not upset! But my laptop came in like two days later there was no way to catch up so I admited defeat on that year.
The next year my laptop had to be factory reset as it would not unlock and there was a virius issue mid november and I just gave up as I was only about 5k worth from the end. So i wanted to cry again. And I did and gave up in depression. Oh did I mention I had a back up on a usb that my brother deleted by accident the day before! lol. Worse time!
So this year I havet wo laptops, a external and I bought a special usb for it!

19) What's your 'day job'? (Or your major, if you're in school.): Volunteer Coordinator for The Rainbow Society
20) Have you ever been published (and/or do you want to be)?: Quite a bit actually. I wrote for my University paper for 3 years I also wrote for an online womens publication.
21) Script Frenzy Veteran: No
22) Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders): You are doing a bang up job I think however last year I felt as someone who has participated in Nano before but not in Winnipeg that I was looked upon as an interloper. You may not have been actually doing this but this is how I honestly felt. I understand that many of you have been doing this together for quite some time. But I felt alienated at the kick off last year due to the sheer amount of inside jokes and various other things mentioned that only a few people in the room were privy to. So my suggestion would be to prehaps break up into two groups. One group for people who have been doing this with this group for a while and a second group for newbies not only to NaNo but to the Winnipeg group.
ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
November 16 - going to a dropkick murphy's concert!
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves?
Sometimes it's a blatant rip off other times it's merely that they share a name. They say write what you know. I feel that can extend to writing the people you know to.
C)Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till your done? Do they get to read them at all?
I've let my best friend read it in its entirity and my husband has been allowed to read two paragraphs. Other than that no one will ever be allowed to read my nano novel.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.
Hopefully
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?:
I do A LOT of people watching.
42,094 / 50,000
Oct 20, 2009 - 05 02
1) Name/Handle:
Linda/daen wiser
2) Hometown:
Winkler
3) Gender/Age (optional):
f/37
4) Years Done Nano:
This will be year 5
5) Years Won Nano:
Four. I just squeaked in once or twice, but I've always finished
6) Number of Friends Recruited Into Nano:
Four for sure, possibly more. I keep trying with some people (my sister, mostly, who keeps claiming that between leading choir, teaching piano, and homeschooling her three kids, she has no time. Honestly.), and I'm hoping that this year life will allow participation for them.
7) Technology / Method of Writing:
Ancient laptop without internet connectivity.
8) Genre:
Umm... I don't seem to settle to one genre. Two years (but not consecutive years) I wrote inspirational fiction, one year was fantasy, and one was chick lit. This year could be chick lit or mainstream fiction or humor.
9) Title (if known):
Aardvark Lite. That's the first thing I was sure about with this year's NaNo.
10) What kind of characters do you like to write?
Noncomforming independent women.
11) Favorite Self-Bribery Mechanism (PG-13 please):
For daily goals, chocolate, especially mini peanut butter cups. For reaching quarterly wordcount goals (ie whenever I reach 12500, 25000, etc) I go for books or nifty office supplies. I'm always amazed by people who bribe themselves with Ipods or Xboxes or other expensive stuff - the biggest bribe/reward I've gotten myself was a hardcover book, and that was for finishing my first NaNo.
12) Favorite Music to Write To:
None. I'm distracted by any kind of vocals (words! Must listen to words!), so if I have to listen to something, classical instrumental is all right. So is a mix CD my friend made for me years ago of all kinds of instrumental oddities.
13) Favorite Place to Write:
the swivel rocker in my living room, if I can persuade the cats to vacate it
14) Favorite Procrastination Method:
Reading, forums... and I just got married this summer, so I expect my husband will distract me a bit. Well, a lot, really. (For those of you who kept track from last year, I married sturmey. He won't be writing this year.)
15) Best Nano Moment:
Oh, my. Validating my novel my first year? Discovering I can write 22000 in three days? Holding my novel in my hand as a published work? (it was only Lulu, but still... there are copies of Waltz for a Soldier in the library system where I work).
16) Worst Nano Moment:
Probably something to do with wordcount, impending deadline, and running out of plot.
17) Funniest Nano Moment (if not above):
reading Nanoisms in the forums
18) Hobbies / Volunteering Outside Nano:
well, this last year has been pretty intense with the whole relationship/engagement/wedding planning/wedding/honeymoon thing. I haven't had much time for pursuits besides work and my husband. I have, however, been known to knit and to read.
19) What's your 'day job'? (Or your major, if you're in school.):
Librarian. Library clerk is my official title.
20) Have you ever been published (and/or do you want to be)?:
I've written some articles and worship resources that have been published, and as I mentioned, one of my books has been published through Lulu and is in my library. Would I like to be published by a publishing house and have a print run of larger than seventeen? Yes, but I lack the discipline to keep polishing my work. Once I've written a decent draft, I sort of lose steam.
21) Script Frenzy Veteran:
No. Not my thing, really. Although there is this idea floating in my head that would be more movie than book...
22) Suggestion for the Co-MLs (Municipal Liaisons / Real time event hosts / Cheerleaders):
?
ADD A QUESTION:
A) Chris Baty and the NaNoWriMo Staff suggest planning a 'hooky' day during November (a day of planned not-writing to give yourself a mental break). What's yours going to be and what are you going to do with it?
I usually end up not writing for a day or two somewhere along the line. Or only writing 500 words, which to me is the same thing. I'll just roll with it, whatever happens... although now that I think of it, there's a production of The Pink Panther that I want to see...
B) Do you find that you base characters on people you know, and if so, are you careful to disguise them so your friends and family don't recognize themselves?
I don't do it deliberately, except for the one year, but I seem to do it without meaning to. People have recognized themselves and pointed it out to me.
C) Do you let your family and friends read your WIP NaNo novels, or do they have to wait till you're done? Do they get to read them at all?
I may, at some point, offer to share selections, but mostly it'soff-limits until after I'm finished and have corrected the worst of the typos.
D) Do you plan on taking your NaNo farther after November? Editing, printing off, going for publishing etc.
We'll see. I'm most interested in reworking my '06 fantasy NaNo, and I have ideas as to where I want to go with it... but sooooooo lazy.
J) Where or how do you get your best creative ideas?
daydreaming
R) What has been the most boring character, in your opinion, you have ever created?
Don't know. I'm sure there've been a few, especially since the fantasy novel featured twelve princesses. I don't think I quite succeeded in differentiating them properly, much less making each of them interesting.
S) What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever written?
Two possibilities. The first was the sex scene, the first I'd ever written. Iwas horribly embarrassed writing it, and dropped it halfway through. (Later re-reading made me think that it wasn't as bad as all that, but I still deleted it anyway.) The second was in last year's NaNo, when my characters persisted in sitting around the kitchen table and drinking coffee and burning through plot points. In the end, I tried sending them to participate in a roller derby, just for the action, then gave that up and restarted from the point where I had bogged down. Not so bad, you might think... but I left it all in for the sake of word count.
T) Will NaNo affect your other writing?
I don't write much outside NaNo. I feel I should, but I don't.
