For a long time I have wanted a really close writing friend, but it's still mostly been a solitary hobby. Every year since first discovering NaNoWriMo, I have wanted to have someone to play it with. Yes, there are the forums and the local meetings, and those are GREAT, don't get me wrong, but there is still that urge to convince someone else to sign up, someone close who will give it a really personal social edge when you're writing at the same time. Unfortunately, I have never pushed NaNo on anyone very aggressively, since I worry that I may come across as a goofball.

But this year I will be bolder in drafting new hyper-writers. And maybe we all can be. So I propose a friendly contest, to see who amongst us can get the most people to sign up for NaNoWriMo. Thus far I have gotten my father-in-law signed up. Go for anyone at all -- friends, family, minor acquaintances, co-workers, enemies, complete strangers, whoever. I bet any of y'all can beat me ten times over! Who's up for it? And who's already brought in some new victims?

Melanie (ReasonsUnknown) and I are trying to get a group started up in our dorm, so we might have a mini-group to share. So far, we've convinced Janet to join. Katie's done it before, so she doesn't count.

I also convinced one of my roommates (I think). The other two roommates replied with varying levels of obsenities which boiled down to "Are you kidding me?"

Eying my dog trainer now. I don't know her outside of work (she helps train my puppies), but she seems like the creative sort. -rubs hands- We'll see.

I'm planning on printing up some posters and tacking them up around campus (hey, Incandescent, care to join me? I live off campus but I'm at USC, too!). I figure with as many students as we have at USC, we should be able to pull in SOME creative sorts! I know we have a creative writing program!

I'm off campus this year too, but I lived in the same dorm for two years, so it's still "my" dorm. I'm over at the Rapids now, since there's no way my current living situation would fly in a dorm (two puppies, me, and three guys). I try to go back and visit the dorm once every week or so, just so I don't feel distanced from the people.

If you're doing posters, more power to you. I have no printer, else I'd join the endeavor. I was thinking about getting a "Wanna write a novel?" bandana for my dog, because people are always fawning over the puppies. "Oh, it's a cute ickle puppi-- write a novel? Sure, sounds good. -- puppy! Who's a cute little puppy? YOU are!"

I've actually already recruited two people without realizing it. In fact, I've told at least ten people about Nano, every time because I had whipped out my beaten piece of loose leaf to scribble down an idea or aspect to add to my list and someone had asked why was there all that writing on one piece of paper and what's a 'Na-now-rim-o'. Ah, the power of 'the heck's wrong with that girl?!'...
I'm working on my sister right now. She insists the reason she doesn't join is because she doesn't have an idea. I know, I know, the forums are a billion ideas in themselves, but you try telling her that. I'm determined though. I should bribe her. A shiny new notebook to put a shiny 50k is my current plan of action...(writers, so easy to shop for)

Fun Fact: Claiming NaNoWriMo as your religion and your writing desk, along with the buliding that houses it, a place of worship will not get you federal tax reductions.

I've recruited one friend to the cause who would otherwise have scribbled to himself in smaller portions -- now we can share in the madness/neuroses.

I have a couple of distant cousins who might've taken the plunge on their own in due time, but my asking about Nanowrimo sped up their sign-ins. Writing in pace with each other will be a fun way to connect across the country.

Incandescent, for the record, I think your puppy plot is brilliant. May have to try it with my cat.

Well, it seems that I have roped two new people into this. And my recruit from last year has apparently gone on a recruiting spree. Also, my Advanced Composition teacher has put a notice on the door. And if the new recruits start gathering people...Oh dear.

Er....if anyone notices a spike in teenagers doing NaNo in Columbia this year, I'm just going to go ahead and say...I had nothing to do with it. Nothing at all.
