Yes, you had to be a sandbox developer to get invites. Luckily, I know people ;) Not sure if there are many invites out there to be snapped up now though. All the people I know have given them out already. Never fear, though, the public launch can't be terribly far away now.

Except for one catch and it's the catch that Google have a proven track record of. Case in point, You know how long Gmail was in beta? This year it left beta and it has been around for atleast five years already.

True, and admittedly I'm still waiting for Chrome to become available on Linux, but I am talking about it being made publically available (to anyone, whether they have an invite or not), not necessarily out of beta.
The fact is, no community-driven bit of gear (like Wave) is very much fun until there's lots of people you know on it. Right now, I have a few waves going with some techy friends of mine, but I can't use it to do a lot of the things I'd like to do - like talk to you guys - until it's publically available. Google will lose the momentum they've already gained if they delay the public release for too long. And I think they're too smart to let that happen ;)
