I did NaNo last year, but I never went to any writing get-togethers. So for those of you who have, are there any traditions for when and where we usually do them? How many people usually show up? And do we even have an ML to coordinate this stuff or are we left to fend for ourselves?

Hi, Tatsumi...
Haven't done this before, but it appears from the ML list (http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1003232) that there's nobody for RI (or even Southern MA). So I guess we're on our own -- but I'm sure we could figure out a reasonably central location.
Cheers.

Currently, I stepped down from Co-ML due to night classes at NEIT and recently my laptop took a fall and currently looks like someone took a pixel knife to it. I'll be able to make weekend write-ins but week days are out.
I'm going to hazard a guess that Sapphie is going to be ML again...?

I've been doing NaNoWriMo for years, but the only event I've ever made it to is the 2007 kickoff at Blake's tavern. I'd like to make it to a couple more events this year, but being a full-time student without a car DOES make it a bit hard. At least PC gives us free RIPTA.

I don't know where everyone lives, and what locations are most convenient, but there's this great cafe in Warren called The Coffee Depot which I think would be great for a meeting place. There's also a place in Providence... I don't remember what it's called - it's the one that's really liberal, has an open-mic poetry slam on Tuesday nights, and is on that street that college students are supposed to love to hang around...?
I'm a student too, so the best times would be weekends, preferably weekend evenings. I'm pretty much free every weekend evening for the month of November - the only limit being my lack of a driver's license, so I have to rely on my parents or a friend's parents to get me there.
Does anyone have other ideas for a good place to meet for a kick-off thing?

^You're not talking about Thayer Street by any chance, are you? The Blue Room? Blue State Coffee? Tealuxe? Coffee Exchange?
Nah, I have no idea. Like most of us, I won't have reliable transportation, but I want to go to meetings. I'm in Providence, so obviously it would be convenient for me if we had a meeting in Providence, but you know, whatevs.

It's a bit murky right now exactly what will happen in re HQ, but for the time being, I'll dust off my ML cap (and crazy neon shirt) and fake it.
Looking at the big ol' calendar on the wall, for major events I'm thinking..
Kickoff -- Halloween weekend. So that's Friday 30th, Saturday 31st, or Sunday 1st, the big starting day.
Midterm -- second weekend in November: Friday 13th, Saturday 14th, or Sunday 15th
TGIO -- first weekend in December? (since Nano ends on a Monday this year)
We've usually had all the major events in and around Providence because that's where most of us are, statistically.
In general, any major or 'official' event should be at a venue that is:
- public (no private homes or restricted venues)
- centrally located
- easy to get to
- accessible by public transit
- ADA-compliant (wheelchair accessible)
- all-ages and family friendly (as many Wrimos are under 21, and we want parents to be comfortable)
- affordable
The same should apply to most regular write-in and meet-up venues, and all official ones.
We've habitually holed up at Reflections in Providence (corner of Governor and Wickenden) for years now, and they've very graciously put up an official Nanowrimo window decal to make it easier for newer people. They've always been good to us.
I have power strips and I'm ready to travel, though this year I'm personally restricted to public transit. That doesn't mean that all events have to be accessible to me. Hopefully, wRImos will set up write-ins all over the state!
What would really help right now is:
- Let us know where you'd like to meet up.
- Let us know what dates you think will work best for you for the major events, or at least the Kickoff.
This public forum is best for all planning, and don't hesitate to start your own thread, if you want to organise something -- the more the merrier! If you want to, please feel free also to contact me privately through Nanomail. (checked daily, and I always reply, I promise!)

Oh! The corner of Wickenden and Governor would be incredibly convenient for me! I live within a mile of there. As for dates and such, I would like to meet on Sunday the first for the kickoff (maybe mid-afternoon, depending on everyone's schedule?) since I feel like people are going to be doing their own thing with friends and family on Halloween. Thoughts on that?

Hi all,
----------I can't make the 1st since I'm working. Sundays might be good for me during November but so far I've been scheduled to work them. I usually have a weekday off if anyone is interested in setting up times during the week as well. And Reflections works for me too

Based on the above, I'm looking at..
Kickoff: Sunday 1 November, starting around 5pm. This is because there's a chance I'll be out of town that day and not able to attend in person. In that case, rkbentley would run it, and so far he can't make it till 5pm. What do you all think of that?
It also looks like we'll be able to split write-in coverage, with rkbentley doing Saturdays at Reflections from 5pm on, and I can take a day in the middle of the week. I need to talk to Reflections to find out if there are any event conflicts, but right now I'm thinking of Wednesday evenings, starting around.. how does 4ish sound? Earlier? The place closes at 10 pm.
These only cover Providence. People in Newport, URI, etc., should let us know your needs. It's not possible for us to cover everyone everywhere for all times, but we can help you organise write-ins and meetups in other places.
If anyone wants to do their own, let me know (ideally by Nanomail, so I won't miss it), and I'll add it to the regional calendar for everyone to see.

^On the corner of Wickenden and Governor. It's not far from downtown, really close to Brown University, and a few miles from Hope High School.
5PM is good with me too. :)

It's at the corner of Governor and Wickenden Sts., in Fox Point (lower East Side).
It's a cheery place, with good food and drink, and there's ice cream next door.
There's also free wifi, though you need an access code, which you get on request when you buy something.

Eh. I hate that I'm probably the farthest away. I can honestly say that I'm not driving all the way to Providence (that's my South County upbringing there.... hehehe) for a write-in, but I'm definitely interested in one closer to my area (Westerly).

I understand where you're coming from, j, heh. I might have recommended Eastern Connecticut, but looking at that region, it seems to me that most of their stuff is happening in the Manchester/Tolland area (which is more Northern/Central to my reckoning, though it's not my place to say).
I'm about to make a top-level post about exo-metro groups, so stay tuned.

I am doing NaNoWriMo with a group of tenth graders at Hope Arts High in Providence.
In addition to writing in and after school, we just connected with the Rochambeau Library (Providence Public Libraries) and will be doing write-ins from 3-5pm on Thursday, November 5 and Thursday, November 9. We will be meeting in the computer lab in the basement. There are computers available to type and plenty of space for laptops.
Everyone and anyone is encouraged to join us--I'd love for my students to have an opportunity to interact with other NaNoers in the community and get an idea for how big this thing really is.
To recap:

I'm about to set Wednesday write-ins. Only waiting for final feedback from you.
Without objection, venue will be Reflections Cafe, Providence.
I'm suggesting approximately 5pm-9pm. If you want earlier or later, let us know.

Hey, my friend and I are doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year, and i don't know about her but I'd love to go to some write-ins. We are both 17 though, so could you make sure wherever you choose is allows minors. Providence is good for me by the way, my city is only about 5 minuets away.

All of our official events (in this region, anyway) are always all-ages, no exceptions. (We've had some events at places like Blake's, but I made sure they had a BV permit -- all-ages tavern license -- and would allow minors.) I take this provision very seriously, and think it's extremely important that all our official events be open to everyone regardless of age.
That said, any non-official meetups or write-ins could have any limitations that suit the people organising them, or the venue they choose. (Dorm write-ins, for example, would typically not allow anyone who isn't a student at that particular school; and a meetup at a typical bar probably does exclude minors.)
In our calendar, unless otherwise noted, most events are official. (Those that aren't are typically noted by the name of the organising group.)

Quick note to everyone: If you want to organise any events of your own (for example, at your school or such) and want them listed in the regional calendar here, please let me know by Nanowrimo private mail, or by email (the address in the massmails you receive from me from time to time). Otherwise, I might overlook them and neglect to add them.
I will also be sending out a regional massmail about once a week during Nanowrimo. I can add your private events to this, if you let me know beforehand. Provide as much information as you feel is relevant, including any restrictions you know of. (Unlike official events, private events can have any restrictions. E.g., URI students only, that sort of thing.)
