Finally reading the Brothers Karamazov, because I'm tired of everyone on the planet telling me to read it! Also starting An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears.

JOHN GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN sometimes I want to just drive down to Indianapolis and ask him to be my friend.

uh uh uh I think I am only reading school books right now/for the rest of the semester. But I picked up some not-school books at the library...of course they have titles like "Scarlett's Sisters: Young Women in the South" or something like that and "Arthurian Women: A Casebook," so they are still pretty school-y. But that is okay because this is what I want to do with my life, right?

French Music from the Enlightenment to Romanticism 1789-1830 (for class)
Queen of France
Secrets of Marie Antoinette (both for fun)
Monochrome Factor (actually is a manga, but I consider those to be 'books' as well)

Well, the baby slows me down some, but I still read so many that this is almost always a futile question. Today I'm reading "Wicked Games" by Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush and "Frankenstein"; two days ago it was "Three Days to Never" by Tim Powers (such an awesome book); two days before that it was "The Truth Machine" by James L. Halperin (almost creepy in the amount of things he predicts that are close to what really happened). And tomorrow I'll probably be reading something else.

And Ms.Fairy, excellent taste in books (except maybe the Salinger...I don't know, it just didn't spark my brain, you know?)

Hmmm. I'll have to check him out; I don't think I'm familiar with his work (although I recognize that feeling of kinship). Do you have one you'd recommend over others? I could use a new book/favorite writer.

Oh, and since we've got a couple of 'Shanara' and fantasy fans in general here, what series would you compare this to? I've heard they are good, but I had a bad experience with another Brooks' novel in the past and have not been able to make myself pick up this series. I may have to now, but I'd appreciate a reference!

I've been reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels; I'm currently on the 8th one. I've also been reading through a past manuscript, but that doesn't really count.

Hey Barb--John Green writes YA novels, and I would actually recommend all three, in order, because it's fun to watch his growth. Looking for Alaska is heavily autobiographical, while An Abundance of Katherines is my favorite because it's the first book I ever read with real nerd boys like the ones I know, but Paper Towns is maturer in terms of plot and writing. So, growth is fun, and the books are funny, and the writing is good, and I luff him.

Right now I'm reading "Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex" by Mary Roach (which I can only read at my house, because it's causing me to constantly dissolve into giggles); and "The Legends of the Jews" by Louis Ginzberg. I'm a little over halfway through "The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara" by David Kertzer and haven't been able to admit to myself that I'm not going to finish it. I've been trying not to start anything new with NaNo around the corner.

I, too, have started "The Brothers Karamazov" but am pretty sure that finishing it will never happen. It would help if every character didn't have a half-dozen gotdamn names, so it's nearly impossible to figure out who's who.

I've tried to read the Brothers Karamazov about a dozen times. I've never made it past the first chapter. It's just not for me, and I don't think I'm a reverse snob--liked Anna Karenina, can hold my own with D.H. Lawrence, but for some reason Brothers Karamazov just gets me bored, fast.

But Becky, say it ain't so. You're going to put "The Gathering Storm" on your bookshelf for a month and three days before you'll read it? How will you stand the suspense?

Did you see Sanderson's going to be at the Borders in Oak Park (Chicago) IL signing copies? And Harriet Jordan might be there. Still debating taking that long drive with a baby and husband in tow...

And now I'm reading "The Drowning City" by...I don't know, it has an author. It's not bad, but it relies heavily on the idea that you look at and memorize the details of fantasy maps, which I generally ignore.

Now I'm re-reading Caleb Carr's The Alienist. Trying to put myself in a Victorian frame of mine for November. And reassuring myself that NaNo-style writing and research will keep me from oversalting the book with historical factoids and and an excess of research.

I'm currently reading "Pride and Predjudice and Zombies" by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.
It's a brilliant expansion of the original novel, supplying what the original novel lacked: hoardes of the undead.
...not to mention ninjas and swordplay.

"Pride and Predjudice and Zombies" by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith - yes! This is next on my list. That first line is awesome. More books need zombies in them. I am currently enjoying the "Zombie Haiku" book by Ryan Mecum.

*squee* Nano is only six days, one hour and twenty-four minutes away...

So I'm reading Stephen King's "On Writing" and may have time to re-read "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamotte.

I'm ready and nervous and excited and my tummy is twisted in little nots.

Six days, one hour and twenty-two minutes...

Love On Writing and Bird by Bird. Have you read Writing Down the Bones and Wild Mind by Natalie Goldberg? Also good.

How's the Mary Roach book? I loved Stiff--have you read that?

I'm reading In Cold Blood (Truman Capote), and Wordpress for Dummies. I'm behind two issues on my New Yorker, and I've been doing a fair number of those ken-ken puzzles.

I am also deeply amused by the I'm So Over Vampires banner. Tres funny!

*sigh*

Also, the zombie version of Pride & Prejudice, loved that too!
