Since we're important enough to have our own write-ins (hosted by yours truly), I figured we should have our own thread at least!

Geelong Wrimos, check-in!

If there's a lot of you, maybe your own region would be something to consider for next year...

Noooo! Face it - Geelong's practically just a suburb of Melbourne! I mean, you can search our bus timetables on the metlink site!

Besides, I doubt there's enough of us to compete against you guys. We all know you'd just throw the gauntlet :-P

wOOt! Other geelong Nanowrimo's. happy happy happy!!!

Must search for write in thread. my social circumstances and work commitments means trying to get to a melbourne write in impossible... looking at over an hour either way and i really cannot absorb that kind of time loss at present, especially with having to devote at least 2 hours a day to writing. (nope, can't write on the train either ---> me gets travel sick if I'm not looking out of a window.)

I will totally be there for a Geelong based write-in. I was bummed at missing the ones in Melbourne last year, so it'll be brilliant to actually join in this time.
I wouldn't want to break away from the Melbourne Region, though. I'm happy to have my word count included in the Melbourne tally.

No worries Naomi, it looks like most people are objecting to Geelong being its own region.

Plus, the more people we have homed to Melbourne, the better our chances of kicking Sydney's backside.

Hi Naomi. :)

I agree... it would be silly to have Geelong set as a different region, we simply don't have the numbers. BUT having Geelong write ins is important as I really want to get involved with them and there is very little chance i would be able to attend Melbourne based ones due to my RL commitments.

Yep, amen to that! If I remember right, they pipped us at the post last year. We cannot let that happen again.

I know what you mean, although my excuse is a little more mundane and selfish. I live in Geelong, travel to Melbourne weekdays for work, and the thought of travelling to Melbourne on the weekends does nothing for me. So, I for one am extremely grateful to Bella for offering to host a couple of write-ins.
The other two weekends, of course, you will probably find me somewhere like Hahndorfs in Pakington Street, or somewhere like it, feasting on chocolate and furiously writing my hand off.

The Chocolate Room in Pako is my preferred hangout. I'm thinking those yummy chockies will be a great incentive to reach word count milestones. Though i really could do with a hotspot so i can use Write or Die. (My fav fiendish writing tool.)

Mmmm. Somewhere with hot chips.
Preferably not MacDonald's.

Now, if I lived in the Melbourne area, I'd be going to La Cucina on weekends to do some serious writing. It's a great little cafe on the first floor of the Emirates Building in between Flinders Lane and Collins Street. Since I live in Geelong, though...

The Wintergarden might be a good place for writing, especially if there's any inclination by any of us to congregate, but I don't know about wifi hotspots. Macca's is the only place I'm aware of that offers free wifi and seriously, if I'm going to hole up somewhere to write, it needs to at least have decent chips.

I don't care about chips but I like the sound of a write-in. Looks like I joined too late for the last one. Gotta say I'm freaking about writing a novel, let alone in one month.

Oh yes, I'll put my hand up for the Wintergarden. :) Hot chips or nachos. Both are good for me. :)

HI Wallbanger and Knitomat, welcome to the Geelong thread. :) Isabella-rayne is hosting two write ins during the month... you are both coming i hope. (have to rustle up a deep fryer for Naomi.)

This is my very first post on the NaNoWriMo site :).

I'm in favour of doing something about the regions. I have two suggestions, but recommend that we only do one of them.

My personal preference would be for there to be a "Country Victoria" (or "Other Victoria") region. But those who are keen for the high wordcount might prefer my alternate suggestion of instead of renaming the "Melbourne" group to a "Victoria" group. I suggest this because I initially signed up for the "Elsewhere in Australia" region, since I'm most definitely not in Melbourne; I only joined the Melbourne region after seeing that there was a "Geelong" thread here.

Oops, another idea. We could make a "Other Victoria" region, and ask everyone to sign up for both that and the Melbourne one, and have everyone put Melbourne as their Home Region. Then, if they wanted to ignore the Melbourne discussions, they could do so easily, but we'd still have the big wordcount. And it would also draw in people who might otherwise be drawn to the "Elsewhere in Australia" group, which would help with the word count too.

Renaming Melbourne to Victoria would IMHO be more likely than creating an 'Elsewhere in Victoria' region, since someone would need to volunteer to be an ML for the Elsewhere group. But OTOH then we'd be the only one that's named after the state rather than the capital. It would be more inclusive, but I think generally people who aren't in the capital cities sign up to their nearest region (obviously not everyone, or there wouldn't be Elsewhere, but we have a fair few people from Geelong and Ballarat and Bendigo and so on). Sydney's got a similar thing going in their forum with threads for Newcastle and the Central Coast.

I'm happy to carry on with organising write-ins and so on outside Melbourne CBD; all it takes is someone in the area to volunteer to host and at least one other person who leaves near them to attend, after all. It's certainly something to think about.

Hello! I'm in Geelong too! This is my first NaNoWriMo! I'm excited, and also rather daunted.

I like the idea of Geelong remaining part of the Melbourne group. Apparently, in about 40 years' time Melbourne's going to have a population of around seven million - I think it could have swallowed up Geelong by then... Oh, we'll still have our council, footy team etc, but we may well be part of Melbourne and it's surrounds in a very real way...

Beating Sydney does sound great - good old inter-city rivalry, that's part of what made them build Canberra... heheh

Gathering together with other Geelong wrimos sounds like fun! It will be good to meet you all and have new friendlings!

Hey fellow Geelong people!

Just wondering what time the Saturday write-ins will be going until? I work on Saturday's and would have no chance of rocking up until sometime in the evening. Also, in reference to places to write that have wifi, I suggest B Bar and Deakin in WP. Not many people around cause semester has finished, and the chips there are absolutely awesome. And just another thought, are any of the MDs in geelong next door to any nice cafes? Cause you don't need to be in the building to acess wireless...

Also, would anyone be interested in having a Geelong drinks (same deal as wednesday night melbourne one)? Just an idea.
