What is everyone writing about this year?
This year i'm writing about this girl who's dad is from an alternate dimension. Her dad hides her away in our dimension (her mom is from here) to keep her from his brother. Her dad's villainous brother NEEDS her because she has super awesome powers that will heal the woman he kidnapped as she is very ill and dying. The brother kills the girls mom in order to draw her back to her childhood home (he can't find her otherwise) and chaos ensues. Basically alternate dimensions, childhood friends, and erased memories.

I'm still working out this story in my head, so plot elements are subject to change.
My main character is a girl who is a mechanic on a mining ship. She's lived on it her whole life, and probably would have stayed there her whole life if not for an alien transport ship that crash-lands into the mining ship. There is only one survivor of the crash - an alien girl named VaRee.
Flash-forward a couple of years. A group of space pirates show up and demand that the miners hand over VaRee. Instead, our intrepid mechanic and her "crew" grab VaRee and the now-repaired transport ship and blast out of there, determined to get back to Earth and find help.
It ends up that there are three groups of people racing to find this hidden planet, for some very compelling reason which I have not yet determined. :-)
Like I said, details need some ironing out...

Barenaked,
Don't send those maniacs to the moon. My characters have enough trouble as it is. They would all (or mostly) be disabled on earth, but in the lower gravity of the moon, they are reenabled. Still there are times when higher gravity is required, so people keep adjusting it. Besides this colony of the reenabled, there is a prison colony where the main character's husband works. (Who doesn't see a lock down coming?)
The MC is the Resettlement Officer for the colony. She selects new applicants and helps new arrivals adjust. But she is also following in the five-generartion tradition of NaNoNoveling (November comes, even on the Moon).
Not sure what the major conflit will be. I hope the story will include lots of humor and some romance.

I'm writing about a guy who has experienced some extreme, unexpected changes in his life. He has to deal with what's happened to him, plus he has to survive a series of challenges if he ever wants to see his family again...
I expect it will be a challenge for me, too. This is the first time I'll be writing a book in first person. The action takes place in a town I've only visited a couple of times. I've been making notes like crazy and downloading maps and graphics to help me with the story. It's a horror novel, so like the horror novel I wrote a couple of years ago I expect it to take me down some dark, disturbing roads. I can't wait!

I'll be writing a modern vampire novel. In the story, there are only 52 vampires in the US, each named for a playing card. The for Suits represent the 4 regions of the US, and the hierarchy for the vampires is pretty self explanatory (King is the leader, queen is one step below, etc.). The face cards form a kind of court for each region, along with the Ace, who is always the most newly made vampire, and is trained by the king in the vampire ways. For the actual plot, I'll just copy and paste what I have from my notes (so, obviously very rough, here):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Main character will be the Deuce of the Hearts. He has recently been raised to the Two, after the death of the previous Queen. The Queen has been killed by the Jack, but no one knows this yet.
The Deuce is experiencing a new world with his new vampire freedom. He spends time exploring his region and visits the regions of his fellow Suits. He meets other vampires from his own Suits and others, all with varying levels of respect or disrespect of the lower vampire or the rival Suit. General vampire adventures until the King dies in an obvious power play by the Jack. The entire Deck comes to the region capital to witness the coronation of the new King of Hearts.
The Deuce (he is still the Deuce until the King chooses a new vampire to be made) is furious that the King has been murdered, because he loved the King, who brought him into this world that he now loves and trained him to be the man he is today and yadda yadda yadda. He pleads with the rest of the Hearts to help him avenge the deaths of the King and Queen, but they are unwilling, because he is now the King and they should obey.
The Deuce attempts to go to the other Kings of Suits and entreat them for justice, but he finds them already in conference worrying about the new King, and they are talking about what they can do to stop the new King, who's obvious lust for power will likely bring him to their own realms. Deuce listens in on the conversation, learning new things about the vampire history and hierarchy (I can already see the major infodump chapter this will be). They worry that the new King will try to become the King of the Deck, which they speak of as if it's happened before. When wondering what they can do about it, one of the Kings says that they might need to call on the Jokers for help. The other kings scoff at the suggestion, one of them saying that they Jokers aren't even in the US. The Deuce hears them wondering where the Jokers might be, and they mention other Suits that the Deuce has never heard of before (Cups, Wands, Swords, Coins. Probably only want to have him hear only one of the Suits that he's never heard of before). The Deuce finds out that the American Deck has been modeled after an Italian order of the same fashion, using those other Suit names from the classic Italian deck.
The Deuce must make his way to Italy and enlist the help of the Italian Deck to find the Jokers, a pair of vampires outside the rules and laws of any order, to stop the new King of Hearts before it's too late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Still trying to come up with a name, I'm thinking Jack of Blood for now. Still not totally set in stone on the playing cards being the actual names of the vampires, if only because I'm not sure if seeing the name the Deuce or Two or the Two would get old quick (not to mention the unfortunate scatalogical associations).

I'm writing about someone killing a certain amount of people so he can gain 14.29% of spiritual energy to fuel an element that can only be used wisely - and only used once - so that he can revive someone he lost in his life. But when the news of the killings that this someone has committed reaches the attention of public media and is broadcast all over the county it is set in - and catches the attention of four PI's who call themselves "The Hunters". So they can hunt this guy down. However, they never see his true face until the chaos ends, because the way he kills brings him a "special ability" - to become one of those dead souls by simply touching one of the items precious to them.
That's all I'll reveal for now.

My story this year is going to be a little different from my normal high fantasy. While it is fantasy, it is more about the passage of time and the events that started on a world called Haven.
I'll be working the story from the view point of one of the historians as they witness these events over the course of almost a century. It isn't an easy one to describe, but it is for a game I'm creating. It starts when the pieces of prophecy start coming together, alerting not just the gods to the unfolding and unstoppable war, but beings that worked to prevent the coming war from destroying the planet. If they fail, darkness will consume the world. Only pieces of a forgotten prophecy can guide the heroes and armies to victory.
The war itself doesn't last the entire century. There are the affects it had on the world from the uses of high magics and the release of wild energies and elementals on the land.
If this historical view is completed before reaching 50, I have a couple of short stories in mind that will go along with the history, but from another point of view.

Some cool ideas floating around in here. Imagination is alive and well in Tulsa!
I'm also writing about vampires, and zombies, even though I was told that I shouldn't because vampires and zombies are all played out. Whether or not that's true, I still can't get enough of either of them, so I'm just gonna have fun writing this story and not worry about its marketability.
I haven't hashed out all of the details yet, but it explores the question of how an underground race of vampires would react to a global zombie infestation killing off their food supply. Assuming that, since they're a different kind of living dead, vampires A) would be immune to the zombie-making virus and B) would be ignored by zombies who crave living flesh, it would fall to the vampires to defend humanity against the zombie hordes. But then, how would humanity, now an endangered species, react to the "saviors" who still see them as food?
I have a few MCs in mind, but I'm still figuring out the plot. Wherever the story goes, it will contain elements of action, horror, tragedy, black humor and romance.

I am fascinated by your concept. Will totally have to have that discussion with my S.O. later.
And as far as the whole "played out" thing: if you are fascinated, to heck with what anyone else has to say. In *my* not so humble opinion, zombies have not quite hit the peak, they are still climbing. But I'm not terribly into zombies, usually, so there you go, it's just what I see.
Anyway. Two cents and whatnot.

Amanda S. - I'm writing about parallel dimensions! This is going to be a very interesting NaNo . . .
soo . . . my story's going to be tooons of fun to write. Basically, I had an idea one day at work (working in a drive thru is very conducive to creative thought :D). The first idea was Father Time - what if there were parallel dimensions, and Father Time was in charge of taking care of them? Then - what if, in those parallel dimensions, they all had certain events that coincided, and those same events at the same times would cause portals to open between the dimensions. But if there are portals, then people can travel back and forth, and somehow the timelines have to remain intact - ergo, guardians! I don't know that they will stay being called guardians, because that seems a little cliche to me, but I'll figure that out later.
So basically, my main character, Lillian, is going to be training to be a guardian of one of these portals, and she discovers she has to marry some guy (Seth) and they'll guard the portal together, and eventually pass it on to their children. This novel will deal with Lilli and Seth's romance, and Lilli's mishaps with 'time', and of course somewhere in there they'll have to save the world.
I know, it sounds cheesy right now :D. It's much better in my head.

I'm going to try and write a fantasy/military story set in a sort of 17th/18th-century setting, where knights and archers have given way to muskets and cannons. I guess the fantasy comes from the fact that it's set in a fictional world, but the fantasy is pretty light since there's no magic to speak of.
Admittedly I decided to do NaNo pretty late; I literally started planning the story today, so I'm gonna have to go lightning-fast to get a synopsis by November 1st. But I think it'll be fun, even if I don't get half the required word count.

I've been really immersing myself in Tolkien lately. At the moment, I'm reading The Silmarillion. So when I started brainstorming I was almost sure I'd gravitate towards that type of story with exotic races and such. I was surprised when I came back to a totally different idea that I did some pre-writing for awhile back but has since been gathering dust.
Its a historical romance in a fictional town, the name of which I haven't yet decided on. Its going to be set in 1850, during the gold rush. Here's my little synopsis-thingy-that's-more-of-a-blurb-than-a-synopsis:
Lacey Jefferson was a widow. But she wasn't just any widow. They called her a California Widow, because her husband was off on the other side of the country, caught up in the gold rush. It was Jonah Jefferson's plan to make himself a modest fortune so that he could better care for his wife and daughter. What Lacey didn't know was that her California widowhood turned into true widowhood a year ago. When she decides to hitch a wagon ride west with her daughter Becky to go find Jonah, what will she find instead?
I'm an 18 year old girl.. of course I'm a sucker for a good romance. And this idea got me excited because of the tiny bit of "wild west" that I'm gonna get to stick into it... and it wasn't so cliche'd that I wanted to cringe. haha.
I'm liking all the other ideas/plots that I'm seeing! And I'm definitely not brave enough to wait until Nov 1 to think up something to start writing about on the spot.... kudos to those who are going to try. :)

A girl and a guy have the same dream, the dream is particularly long and time wise feels like it was three years. The dream ends with the guy purposing to the girl, after throughout most of the dream being her best friend. They wake up and they're both the ages they were when the dream initially started (girl: 14 guy: 17, when the dream ended however the girl 17 and he was 20 [and I know that's a bit strange, but you'll see when you read the actual story]). I'm trying NaNoWriMo for the first time and have a rough outline (what happens in each chapter) for a historical romance novel about the filles de casette of New Orleans. In the novel, a woman marries an upper class Frenchman who throws her out of his house because she can't bear him a son. When the asylum he consigns her to is emptied and the women in it are carted off to the new French colony of Louisiana, the woman is married off to a rich planter who uses her as a servant. The woman falls in love with one of the workers on the plantation, but he disappears and she must search for him after she escapes the terrible life she has with the plantation owner.

I'm working from a firm-ish outline (it's my first nanowrimo, I probably overprepared). the title is tentatively Service Before Self, and it's a Murder Mystery set here in NE OK, set in the present day but tied in to an event in OK's Aviation History. This will be my 3rd "official" attempt, but I'm still using the same basic concept as in the previous 2 attempts, although it's mutated a lot for each attempt. As they say, "third time's a charm", and in this case it might be true, because I actually have the whole story fairly well worked out, with a couple of alternative endings. The previous 2 times, I had a concept, but I could never figure out to make a full length story out of it. The only issue will be finding time to write it. We'll be on vacation in Florida for a week, plus we're going out of town for Thanksgiving, so it's gonna be tough.
A scientist unknowingly unleashes entities into our universe. These entities exist in the boundaries between universes. They have no concept of linear time, they exist in all times. They are sentient in a "collective" sort of way. I don't want to give too much away so I won't explain how they do it, but these entities can alter our reality. Some entities are "good" and are trying to undo the damage. The other's are "evil" and are content to wreak havoc on our universe.
How's that for a whacked out story??? It sounds weird when typed out like that, but in the actual story, these details aren't revealed until close to the end. I had hoped to be further along in my word count, but my iPod touch ate about 800 words about 3am Nov 1, so I basically had to start over.
