Are the Bad people trying to get information out of him, or just torture for the fun of it? Or for some other purpose (Tortured souls who died slowly make our gods happier)
And of course, Do your bad guys have access to fast growing Bamboo?

What time period are we talking about here. Tech level can do a whole lot.
However, that being said, I would always go back to the simple methods, like skinning while alive, stopping when they faint, and wake them back up. These types of things are pretty horrific, and you will die, from infection if nothing else.
