Okay. This is a bit of a less graceful thread but Nanowrimo is happening really soon and I have a lot of stuff on my plate so I would like to talk about meetings so I can get excited.

So when are meetings good for people.

At the moment November's shaping up to be a very free month for me. That, however, could change at the drop of a hat.

What about you?

My schedule varies from week to week at this point although I am hoping that will change soon!

I will try and make it to any meetings that I can.

I won't know for sure until I get my new schedule next week. XD
But it's pretty likely that I won't be able to make it to a lot of the meetings. Especially if they're later in the evening. And if they're downtown again; it's hard going from all the way in Torbay to downtown.

I am extremely busy, but nano is only once a year so I will be jetting around from place to place for nano meetings.

You and me both Coralie - except for the busy part. I'll be finding my way one way or another to them, unless I have an exam. I'm off mun by 1pm the latest so most times are great for me.

Hey people.

Wow, you guys are so on top of things. I came on to post a thread about the meetings and--voila!--it's already done.

Since no one has suggested a time or day of the week yet, I propose Monday evenings around 7pm. I have classes Tuesday-Thursday nights, so Mondays are ideal for me. However if this poses a problem to other members, I can facilitate from afar, and if it's Tuesday or Thursday that is decided upon, I can come to about half of the meetings. I have full faith that others can run the meetings as well, so if Mondays are no good, don't feel we need to make them that date on my account.

Anyway, what does everyone think? How do Mondays look for everyone else?

Monday is really bad for me. I have a dance class starting at 7.

Thursday would probably be fine for me and the hooligans.

Wednesday and Friday is also fine.

Monday's are no good for me, either. Dad plays pool, haha.
I don't see a problem with having it on any other days, thouuuugh!

Where will we be having them?

Last year we had it at two places (depending on the tables available), either Hava Java or... I think it was Atlantic Place?

Yeah, we can try Hava Java again this year.

If Mondays are no good, we can do them another day. Fridays I'm free and I hadn't thought of that. Fridays at 7?

I need more input to make sure we pick the right day peeps. Post what days you can meet!

Fridays work for me. Actually, any day works for me, if we meet downtown. I have a midterm at some point in November, but at worst it'll make me miss one meeting.

Friday's at seven downtown works for me. It actually works well, because I've been trying to talk my younger sister into trying nano and if it's on fridays it'll be easier to talk our mother into letting her come to meetings as well.

Not to mention that it makes it sound as if I actually have a life. :P

Fridays at seven is wonderful, though I may miss one for exams. But what about place? Hava Java is like a NaNo tradition, though we have to remember that the group is Canada :: Newfoundland not St. John's and though I have no issue going downtown there have been some people that have expressed concerns as to going downtown. Are there any other options? Tims on Kenmount? The Sobey Square(Mount Pearl Square) ex food court? Cherish likes Chapters on Kenmount. Not only does it have the obvious connection but Kenmount is pretty accessible. Roughly the same distance from MUN for the students, most buses go there, and it's easily accessible from both St. John's and Mount Pearl.

But that leaves out the east end, and it's still hard for people from Torbay. There's MUN itself... The Engineering Cafeteria? I haven't been there in ages but what about the Aquarena?

Anyone else have any ideas? Maybe we could have a vote?

Tuesday evenings are the only time that are out for me, as of now. Friday is good, although Im not a fan of downtown parking on any night really. Downtown seems ok for some but not for others :S What if we had more than one meeting each week? We could do a couple and people can attend whenever their schedules allow.

Anywhere is good for me. If it's anywhere other than downtown or Kenmount I'm gonna need directions (or an address so I can GOOGLE the direction) though - those two areas are pretty much the extent of my St. John's area knowledge.

Friday is good for me, though any day in the evening is good.
I'm able to get probably to all places, 'cause my parents love me and Coralie, Christina, Becca and I will probably be super car-pooling.
Though mom did say it'd be easier if it was in Mt. Pearl.
I personally don't see an issue with getting down town or Kenmount or wherever it's decided the meeting places will be.
So... Yay for being adaptable!

I have no problems with Fridays. :) [Plus since it's not a school night my parents won't have any problems with staying out too late. :P]

Location... I don't much care. Although somewhere besides downtown would be convenient, I love Hava Java. :P
Chapters on Kenmount's nice. There's a starbucks! :)

Honestly, location doesn't matter much to me. I'm not the one driving.

@Multi: But your father will be.

Um I don't drink coffee. So I don't care. But I like Hava Java because they are cute. And also, I won't be impulsed to buy books that I will never read.

@Majaorn: I don't think we need to put it to a vote. xD Let Jamyjam decide.

Hey guys. Sorry--my schedule this year is insane so I am out for whole days at a time. (I write for the Muse now, so make sure you're all reading it as often as possible, haha.)

A few things about the direction the conversation in this thread is headed with regards to our meetings:

1. We can't have it at Starbucks on Kenmount, or the Starbucks in Chapters. The atmospheres in those places are not conducive to a meeting of our size. The one at Chapters is definitely out because it is so small. The other one further up the road would be a tad better, but it's not the right atmosphere, and if we all didn't buy drinks, I can see the staff being much less inclined to have us back for another meeting. Also, the busses don't go all the way up there, so people, like myself, will have difficulty getting there, especially as the weather worsens.

I do understand the concern with the Mt. Pearlites, and I do see that it is Newfoundland, not St. John's. However, because downtown St. John's is central to Torbay and Mt. Pearl, as well as the city, it is logically the best place.

2. Hava Java was a good setting for us, but not a great setting. This is my fourth year as ML for the region and I've seen it grow so quickly. When we were a smaller group, I loved having it up there; cozy environment, beverages, the works. However, since we are now basically too big to fit in one section of the cafe, I highly suggest we stick to Atlantic Place. I know it's not as cozy, but we can get Booster Juice there, we can bring coffees or food or whatever there, as it is a public place, and it's huge and empty with tables we can push together. We're not bothering anyone with our noise, and we can really make our meetings our own without worrying about the location. If anyone has serious objections to having the meetings there, voice them, but also suggest somewhere else that is completely practical with a group of this size and volume.

3. We'll determine now, since there have been very few reservations, that the date and time will be Fridays at 7pm.

4. Because we're having meetings on Fridays, the launch MUST be on a different day. There are so many things going on on Hallowe'en weekend and I know personally I'm busy that entire weekend. I'd prefer if we have the launch on the Thursday, October 29, at 7pm at Atlantic Place, and have every other meeting on Fridays, until the TGIO (Thank Gosh It's Over) which will be determined later. I'll post another thread about the launch, so don't discuss that here.

5. All of that said and aside, I'm so excited to get this rolling. I got the stickers in today and they are AMAZING compared to last year's and have managed to get me very pumped. I'm excited to see all of you after 11 months and see how all of your writing has improved and grown, and how you have done that as well!

I'm going to make a closed thread of information so anyone can read important dates and times without scrolling through these chats as well, so look for that.

Thanks guys and gals, and I look forward to seeing you all!
Jam

My only thing about downtown in general is that for those of us driving parking is going to suck - especially on a Friday night.

Friday is a really good day for me too, so that works out well.

I like Atlantic Place too, but if people are really having trouble downtown we could always consider going to the UC at MUN. It's pretty dead at that time. We might even be able to take over the Loft or book the Landing, but I don't know how that works. Just a backup.

I agree with you, mostly, Jam. Either Starbucks are not suited for our group. But the obvious connection between NaNo and Chapters may lead to patronage. Last time I checked they had tables? Sure it's close to a library so it may be disruptive but I can't see many people being there that late.

As for your point about downtown being centralized, I'm sorry but I have to disagree - that would be MUN. The shortest distance is the straightest line between the two. Now I understand that would leave out St.John's but when you look at the map, Downtown is not only further from the center of Mount Pearl and Torbay but also northeast of the center of st.john's.

As for the parking, MUN is absolutely wonderful anytime after five.

In regards to unofficial patronage, if we were to use some place like the cafeteria in the engineering building, food court, or wherever, most shops are closed by then and we would not be pests to mingle at the tables.

Besides, I'm sure we could use a room in the UC!

Mind you two things: Firstly, I would like to state that however it seems, I do in fact prefer Hava Java and the downtown atmosphere as it was associated with the origin of my NaNo life; secondly, I can assume from the last response I get that I am currently kicking a dead horse and my points will go nowhere. Forgive the graphic metaphor.

So - let's go to Atlantic Place.

Hey Sam,

Starbucks is a cafe and thus is quite busy in the evenings. Yes, they have tables, but our group was upwards of 20-25 people at the launch last year, so I can't risk going somewhere like that.

Downtown is central but not THE central point, you're right. I don't mind the campus idea, but the atmosphere is not as welcoming, and in most of the cases--the UC, the engineering caf--the tables are stationary. When it comes to campus, I have a reservation that it is very large, thus there is a chance people could get confused and lost, and there are only so many places we could go. I can't book a room without a society to do so under, and with so many people from off-campus, I would much prefer to go elsewhere.

Parking downtown should be sufficient on Harbour Drive or the like. I think last year at this time, that street was under construction, but I believe the parking along the water is open now? We should be okay arriving earlier than the later crowd. I know it is annoying that it's not a lot like on campus or somewhere else, but hopefully it won't be too much of a problem.

If enough people want it on campus, I can try to arrange something, but I'd like to hear from people who are not MUN students and are maybe not familiar with the campus as well.
