I want to celebrate you! I want to tell you "Congratulations! I knew you could do it!" I want to pat you on the back, sing your praises, laud your fame to the heavens.

But you have to tell me what you did.

Did you just resolve a sticky plot point? Did you just figure out a character's motivation? Did you just write your five thousandth, ten thousandth, or even FIRST word?

TELL ME ABOUT IT!

Tell me about it here on the forums and I will cover you in laurels and put you up on my virtual shoulders, parading you around the city to the worshipful shrieking of virtual crowds of admirers. Tell me about it in person at a write-in, and I'll give you candy and prizes!

Either way, if you don't tell us, we won't know!

...wrote 5,800 words the first day of Nano...by hand! That's my best first day ever, and confirmation for my theory that if I wrote long-hand I'd actually go faster, because it would be a bigger pain to edit on the fly.

(That, incidentally, is probably more writing by hand than I do in a typical month, maybe two. And my thumb is telling me all about it today.)

I just wrote 3735 words in 2 days--that's more than I did in 3 days last year, and my story is unfolding nicely. I'm able to get emotion into my characters and am realizing some new plot twists. Best of all, I'm having fun! Last year's NaNoWriMo was like slogging through warm butter. Last year, I got stuck 3 chapters in. Must've rewritten the same scene 15 or 20 times, and still couldn't get it right.

Hey, what a great thread JungleMonkey. Look at all the awesome achievements, and it's only Day 2!

I just broke 4100, at least according to my Alphasmart. What I'm feeling good about is a.) I'm moving right along with a novel I didn't even think I'd be writing till dawn broke on November 1st, and secondly, I just wrote a thousand words after coming home from work, which historically is not my best time to 'hunker down'. No idea where this is all going, but I'm just going to let it take me where it will for as long as the ride lasts.

I've just managed to turn what was supposed to be a quick stop to pick up one character into a whole day's worth of writing! Of course, my main character had to fall down some stairs, but that was for the better as well!

And I wrote it all in the middle of play practice.

Fantastic, Moose-Hime! Way to use the Green Room.

What play are you in, if you don't mind me asking. Because I'm slated to go to three in the first part of November and I'm wondering if you're in any of them: The Sweepers at Broadway Playhouse, 12th Night at Actors Theater and Grapes of Wrath at Cabrillo.

Wow everyone great jobs! I just realized that even though I didn't manage to get any writing done last night really I'm still in a good position to stay on track. I just have to say no to hanging out with my...whatever he is...lol. Good thing I do my best writing while tired!

I just came up with a name for my second main character, renamed my first main character (without editing a word) and came up with a direction for my novel to be headed for the time being. And all this while taking notes in class :D

I also made plans to go to tonight's write-in, AND drag a friend with me, so perhaps we can drag him over to the dark side.

You win the Crown of Awesome Multi-Tasking! Never let little things like school, a job or family get in the way of important noveling! (Although I'm taking away points for not having seen you at the write-in last night - but we'll see you another time, right?)

My novel is coming to life, and my life is becoming my novel! It's scary how easy it is to twist daily experiences into unrecognizable stories. Because of this, I have a plot.

I should be hitting 10,000 words in just 4 days in (I was expecting to manage 2000 a day) AND our youngest local writer finally got started on the actual writing part today and logged 67 (out of 1000) words!

How lucky are you!? By becoming fictional, you're breaking out of the constraints that bind so many of us real-lifers to dull conventions like gravity and the need for a tangible medium of exchange. You're in Personal Jet Pack Territory, my friend, and I salute you for it!!

Wow, you're almost halfway there already! I went from 1100 words behind at the end of yesterday to 400 words behind right now by writing 2300+ words this evening, so I guess that's progress. Maybe tomorrow or Friday I can get ahead...

That is totally progress! And please don't compare yourself to me - this isn't a contest of you against me.

This is an Epic Battle where DaveEmpey and his Desire to Write Something Cool does fearsome bloody battle with Shoulder Demons, Internal Editors, His Desire to Procrastinate and various lesser evils like Sloth and the Desire to Do Other Things of Debatable Value Like Laundry and Cooking.

I, personally, have great faith in you and your abilitiy to march ever-victoriously toward your goal, your head held high and your chest thrust out in that confident way that says "You who doubted my ability to conquer are beneath my consideration!!"

Go get 'em, Dave!

I just installed a new hard drive in my laptop and I'm currently formatting it. Not really related to my novel per se, but I do need to write it on something. Hopefully this one won't die on me, knock on wood. If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself...

But this won't hinder my noveling one bit. The first programs I'm going to install? Open Office and Write or Die. The rest can wait their damn turn! Plus, with a blank slate like my little Canti 2.0 there's less temptation to procrastinate on, say, my collection of free-to-play MMOs. The time it takes to install those things just isn't worth the hassle right now.

I predict that not only will I get to at least 12,000 words today, but my laptop will be in perfect condition for tomorrow's write-in.

Oh, hey, anyone have an appropriately geeky name for Canti 2.0? Now that it has a new brain, and with it a new personality, it just seems like it needs a new moniker to round it all out...

I just got over my first major hurtle. I stalled out at 6K. This is my first time doing NaNoWriMo and since I've never pushed myself to keep going I got to figure out what the problem was. I had some issues with how to write 'a bad guy' how to create a creature that is new without being outlandish, and names. For 2 days I lagged. It took some journaling to sort myself out and I hit 9K tonight!
Having so much fun with the process!

Five thousand words is more than the limit that most magazines would accept for a short story. It's also more than 35 Twitter posts!

You're doing fine! I'm all jealous that you get to be on vacation. Part of my brain thinks that if I just took a vacation, I could write tens of thousands of words per day. The other part of my brain has actually been on vacation with me and knows that if I got down even a single word while on vacation, it'd be a miracle. Therefore, I stand in awe of your awesome "writing while on vacation" powers!!
