As noted in the calendar, the South Miami write-ins will be held at the Panera across from Dadeland on Sundays at 2pm. Who's planning to come?

I'm going to be doing the ones in North Miami, but might be able to come down for a couple.

Last,

I am brand new to the area and don't know where I belong. I live near the Omni Metromover station so I can access public transport. I think I'd be going to Dadeland, is that right?

Even though I technically live in Coral Gables, this Panera is quite close, so I'm thinking of going when it's available. Don't know how often that's going to be between school and work, but I'm sure going to try for a couple times.

Luvr, I think Dadeland is your best bet because the Dadeland South stop is pretty close to it. I am not too familiar with Trirail but I think you'd have to take it to get to Aventura, and Dolphin Mall is right out. South Beach is probably technically closest but you'd be taking a bus and I have no idea which one. Maybe someone else knows?

I didn't know there was a Panera Bread across from Dadeland. I might be able to make that one and I'll be taking the Metrorail as well.

It's in one of those big condo buildings... the one with Chili's I think. Next to Old Navy and Office Depot and the Container Store.

Trirail doesn't go anywhere near Aventura. The station is at the Golden Glades Interchange where I-95 and 826 (Palmetto Expressway) meet (around 163rd Street and NW 7th Ave/441) and the next stops aren't until you get to Hollywood. Aventura is at 190-ish Street and US 1/Biscayne Blvd.

The only other option would be to take a Metro Bus from the Golden Glades TriRail Station to Aventura. Dadeland really does sound less painful for you.

I definitely plan on attending at least a few of the Dadeland Panera write-ins. However, the problem is getting my parents to take me and it'll probably be tough. I think I'll mostly be communicating through the forums. I'm not sure if many of you are up for it but I think I might be able to go to a library write-in. I planned on going to West Dade Regional Library on Saturdays to write by myself. It's quiet and comfy so I'm sure many of you would enjoy it. What do you say? (I'm not sure what time yet but I could probably stay there for a good 2-3 hours.)

If you can commit to a time, I'll gladly add it to the calendar. That's not too far out of my way but I'll be in Doral on Saturdays so I probably can't make it, unfortunately.

I actually live pretty close to there...so I might be able to come. You'll have to forgive my ignorance, though, since this is my first time participating, and I'm not sure what all the terminology means.... what's a write-in? And, is there anything in specific I should keep in mind for these meetings? Also, (I know this probably doesn't belong here, but I'll ask anyways...) any tips in specific that you can give to a first timer?

A write-in is a meeting where we all write together. Usually I'll lead ten-minute sprints where we all write in silence for ten minutes, then take a break from writing for another ten minutes or so. Sometimes longer. Often longer, actually. We also talk about what we're writing, help each other iron out problems, that kind of stuff. It's a way to keep everyone motivated and focused. Mostly, it's a way to make everyone write.

Things to keep in mind: sprint time is quiet time, try to bring a laptop if you can, and don't be shy because we're all in this together and there's no first place, only winners!

As for tips, sprinting really is the secret to crossing the finish line. Write in ten-minute increments and then stop writing for at least another ten minutes. Do this as many times a day as you have to. You don't have to set aside huge blocks of time to get your writing done, and in fact that can be counterproductive because then you're freaking out about it. Other than that, go with whatever environment or time of day is good for you; everyone is different and works differently.

Thanks, I'll have to think about what you said... I've never done the ten-minute thing, so I don't know how it'll work out for me.

The best thing to do is try it! In my four years of using and recommending them to others, I have never had a single person say they didn't work. You can go as high as 20 minutes in a sprint but longer than that tends to get unwieldy. 10 minutes seems to be the magic number, so I stick with that. Your first few sprints may be weird because you're getting used to working in a different way, but after the first day or two it should be smooth sailing.

I've never been able to attend write-ins in years past, but I like to sprint here at home. I set the timer widget on my desktop and write, write, write, until it goes off! It's wild how quickly you can add to your word count. It helps keep your inner editor at bay as well. :)

I should be able to attend a couple of these as I live pretty close by. It'll just have to be the weekends I don't have the wee children :)

Thank you for the consideration lastsyllable. I greatly appreciate it. I'll try to work out a time with my parents. I hope some of you can join me! Also, this was the first I had heard of these sprints so I'd like to try it out myself with another one of the novels I'm writing. (Not for NaNo)

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. My computer went crazy a few days ago (I think it still is crazy) so I wasn't able to communicate with you guys. Anyway, I'm gonna try to make it to the write-in on Sunday. Hope to see you all there! Also, I was planning to head to West Dade Regional Library on Saturdays but I can't really commit to a time so don't worry about posting information on it lastsyllable. Thanks anyway! (JUST ONE MORE WEEK!!! WOOHOO!!!)

Can't wait to see all you folks there! I'm going to try to arrive early and nab seats because it can get crowded, especially around where the outlets are just around the corner from the front door. I should also have table tents to identify the NaNo tables so you don't have to wander around too much.

I'll be there, that Panera is around the corner from me. =)

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to bring a surge protector? We'd be able to (safely) expand the number of outlets available for us to use.

See you guys Sunday! I'm so excited. =)

I think I was able to bring a surge protector last time, but we have to be really careful about that so we don't overload their outlets and cause a power outage. Feel free to bring it and worst case scenario we can't use it. Best case, we all have power!

This has me thinking - is there anything we can bring to make your job easier, lastsyllable? General supplies or helpful odds and ends?

Oh sheesh! Don't worry at all. The organization stuff is really the bulk of my "job" and that's just about done. You folks just need to bring yourselves, your laptops/notebooks/typewriters/whatever, and a strong desire for caffeinated beverages. :-D

Write during the commercials! Hit mute, set a timer for three minutes or however long, and write. Reward yourself afterwards with some kind of delicious snack or beverage. Also, the Dolphins will win if you hit 500 words during commercial breaks, I swear!
