First have to say...is it about time or what that the weather starts paying attention to the calendar!?

For when I need to get out of the house next month,I'd like to find a good spot to get a beverage and soak up the vibe for a bit. Anyone know of anyplace worthy in the east valley area? I'm not too far (5 minutes) from ASU but would prefer not right around campus. I just moved into this house around Alma School and University in May and haven't had a chance to scope out someplace inspiring to hang out. There is what used to be Coffee Talk on Robson and Main but I'm not convinced that is the atmosphere I'm looking for. Might try it though. Anything else?

And, if there is someplace cool that isn't necessarily a coffee house, that would be ok too. Pizza place that is "table camper" friendly or something like that...

Don't know if there are any UF grads out there but when I was down there my absolute favorite place to be when not in studio was this little pizza place called Leonardo's (Leo's) that had pizza by the slice, garlic bread knots and a little separate coffee bar and was open late. It was all plywood inside and completely carved up or marked up...had a very "lived in feel". Everything a guy could want. I think they served bottled beer too but I was always trying to stay awake and energized so never took advantage of that. That place was my home away from home... Ahh...glory daze.

Any help?

You might get some more informative responses if you post to the East Valley group.

I like the Paradise Bakery locations on Ellsworth Rd and the one at San Tan Village Mall off the 202 and Williamsfield and the one on Val Vista and Baseline, depending on what part of town I am in. Lots of atmosphere, coffee if you are into that, and free wi-fi which is good for procrastinating. If you like something quieter and a bit more intimate there are also Barnes and Nobels with their tiny cafes at San Tan Village and Val Vista and Baseline.
I'm on the hunt for other places to write, so if you find somewhere inspiring and cozy please let me know!

I live on alma school and broadwayish, so I have most of mesa down pretty well.

inside the bungalow, is cool, for coffee shop vibes.

extreme bean in tempe is awesome, especially being open all night on the weekends.

We do events at connections cafe at the tempe library, the new couch area at bookmans seems good and peaceful,

We're going to be doing write ins at my place on tuesdays if you want to come hang out, ifo is in another thread.

let me know if there's something specific you're looking for.

It took me fifteen years to discover I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous.

I LOVE Inside The Bungalow. It's not far from you--Robson and 1st, just west of Country Club and north of Main. I'm all the way out to the other border of Mesa near A.J., so I only go to the Bungalow when I have a a full day of writing, usually on Fridays. Otherwise I just go to my nearby Starbucks.

Borders Bookstore at Alma School and the 60. They've got a Seattle's Best cafe in there. I find it easier to write being around books. I'm in there usually on MWF afternoons after I teach my classes. Really tall guy with the netbook. Don't be afraid to say hi if you see me.

You asked for Mesa, but I'm going to mention 2 places in Tempe that might be worth trying:

  • Steve's Espresso (SEC of McClintock & Baseline)
They do close early though - like, 7PM. Tends to be quieter and not as many students, esp during the day.

  • Cherubini's Coffee & Donuts (NWC of McClintock & Broadway)
This place is new and they just got wifi. These guys are open a little later (til 9PM), but not the all-nighter joint that I'm looking for too. I like the vibe here (very Tuscan), they serve salad and sandwiches as well as coffee and tea, and because they are a new, local place, I'd like to see them survive, just as an investment in my community.
