Naturally, some us Nanos here in Knoxville are also college students at the cheap prestigious University of Tennessee. Some of us, like myself, are commuters but as I did Nano last year on campus, I know how annoying it can be to have to drive out to write ins off campus and possibly lose your precious parking spot or have to nag someone to drive you.

So I propose that we have an alternative write in day, maybe once or twice a week after class. I would be happy to stay on campus on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from about 5:00 PM on to brainstorm with my fellow college students. We could meet at the library, Panera's, the amphitheater, or anywhere else that suits your fancy. Weekends could work as well, but I'd like to steer clear of game days!

Any thoughts or suggestions? Would anybody even be interested?

As one living on campus who doesn't drive do to the lack of a vehicle I completely and utterly love this idea. Monday, Tuesday, and weekends work for me. Again agree with no home game interference. I personally enjoy the library and panera ideas as far as places.

I definitely love this.

I'm a sophomore with 18 hours. I do, however, work in the library. I work in the first floor reference room on Sundays and Tuesdays from 6-midnight. I don't know that I'm supposed to leave my official position of being here at the desk, but I would love some company in the room on nights in November. Also, Thursdays could be good. I get out of class between 6 and 6:30. I could grab some food and we could find a spot in the library to chill for a little while then too. I don't want to commit to a ton of "oh yes I'll be there" sorts of things because I'm trying to keep my school work first, but I am definitely interested!

Keep me posted on any dates that you plan on meeting up. I will post them on the Google Calendar so that other UT students will know where the most popular NaNo hangout is.

I was actually just in your neck of the woods last week, almost makes me wish Iw as a college student again!

As one of those people who usually has to bum rides off people, I like this idea! Any of those days is good with me - I'd think meeting in the library (possibly in front of Starbucks with a sign or something?) would be best, just 'cause it's relatively centrally located.

Well I'm glad to see you guys are interested! It looks like, as of right now, Sunday might be the best day for us to have write ins. But if we do this twice a week (which would make everybody's schedules more flexible), I was thinking around 5:00 on Thursdays.

So what about it? Sunday afternoons (~2 to 5 or something) and Thursday evenings (~5 to 7) sound good to anybody? This way, it wouldn't interfere with Knoxville's regular write ins on Tuesday and we have more flexibility.

As for place, Starbucks in the library sounds fine to me. I'm a little worried about finding parking on Sunday (as much as I love booking it from Neyland Stadium with a laptop, I'd rather not) but I'm sure I'll find a solution for that ... Maybe on Sunday we could have our write in at Panera's? Any thoughts?

Sundays and Tuesdays I am chained to the reference desk from 6 to midnight. Thursday, I'm in class until 6:30 or later....so I guess I won't get to do the UT write ins either.

Edit: I was originally in contact with a librarian over the summer to try to get some stuff worked out for on campus stuff. Then, everything in that thread got deleted when we got a new ML (no offense, new ML). I'm supposed to be setting up a meeting with her in the next couple days to see if we can organize some stuff on campus. Any ideas there? We've talked about roping off part of the commons or maybe sectioning off something by the leisure reading shelf on the first floor.

If you guys are writing on campus Sunday or Tuesday, ocne again., then just count me out because I'm stuck in the library. On Thursdays, I won't be able to make it until after 6:30 or 7. Are you all going to still be writing by the time that hour rolls around?

Stupid me. I wrote that response before Philosophy and I guess I got confused. I thought you said you were free Tuesdays and Sundays.

Okay, then what about Mondays and Thursdays? Between 5 and 8 or so. Again, this way we'll have some flexibility (And I won't have to worry about parking >:D).

Also, on the 14th we could have a super special write in (it's an away game) and have lots of fun and celebrate having survived half a month!

Mondays and Thursdays definitely sound good for me.

The 14th also sounds well.

When I meet with the librarian, should I suggest we set up a special writing spot in the commons or in a corner of Starbucks or something? I think we might work better if we get a spot sectioned off in the Commons because it'll be open all during the day and night. I haven't talked to her a lot, but I think the main idea is to have it be a spot to write constantly through the month.

I'm honestly not sure. I don't know how many UT students are planning on doing Nanowrimo and if we'll actually have the need to do that. But it would be nice to have a table ready for us at five ...

You can talk to the librarian about it and see if that'll be okay. Even if we just put a sign up next to one of the tables saying that it's reserved from five to eight, that would be great. :3

Lappy my lovely roomie, when did thou makest this thread? And how did I miss it? XD

I work. All the time. Tuesdays and Thursdays will always be out for me because I work Art and Architecture after class until 8:00 (unless we meet after that). I would say I could do Mondays at five, but I wouldn't have my laptop with me because it weighs so darn much and I'd have to carry it all day. I could hand write, but that would pose the dangerous possibility of me editing when I type it up. I also start work at 8 on Mondays so it may make finding dinner difficult, but I'm willing to work with it for a bit if I must.

Unfortunately, weekends work best for me. I really thought Sunday at Panera was a great idea. (Thought not owning a car means I will go whenever you can, Laps).

If we want to meet somewhere in the commons, there are the study rooms. We may get nasty looks in Starbucks if we're loud at all, but the commons is a Public study area and we cannot be asked to leave unless we do something very disorderly (loud giggles ok, public nudity baaaaad), and the OIT personnel won't yell at us because 1. I am one of them and 2.They are indifferent. :O

But yeah. After 8 on Thursdays, Sundays, Saturdays on away games, and Mondays if I must all work for me. And I think I did that out of chronological order to mess with you.

Well then, I think I've made my decision then. Cause I want my roomie to be able to go and I want to accommodate for everyone else so here goes ...

We'll meet Thursdays from 5 to 8 in the library, in the commons somewhere (hopefully we can grab a bench on the second floor [a.k.a. the third floor with Starbucks - wtf?]).

Then, on Sundays we can meet at the Panera's on the Strip between 2 and 5.

These are rough times and you guys can come and go as you please. I'll try to be there all three hours but I might be late or leave early some days. If no one shows up for a while, I'll be there eventually.

As the first write in approaches (the 5th of November - Guy Fawkes Day!!!) we'll decide how we'll recognize each other. I'll probably bring a sign ... and we can meet outside Starbucks. :)

In addition, I'll probably be at the library after class on Mondays and Tuesdays as well with my laptop just writing but just for an hour or so.

Sounds good. I think that I'm going to print some of the posters up and get them printed out and hung up around campus. However, I also think that I might go ahead and say that anybody will be able to find me in the library on Monday nights writing anyway. When I meet up with the librarian, we'll discuss a place with multiple power outlets for laptops, etc etc. Hopefully, she'll email back tomorrow since I didn't hear anything today.

Also, I'm going to print out some of the fliers and post them around campus. Anybody interested in also printing a few out?

K. I work in the library, so I will likely leave some laying around in there, and chances are great I'll post some in the dorm this weekend. And then there's the part where I can put some in the UC too. I'll probably just print out a crap ton and start putting them places.

Anybody want to help out with that?

I am going to aim to come to the Thursday at 5 meetings, my class lets out at 4:55 so it's perfect! I would love to meet in the Starbucks or around abouts (I love the smell of coffee!) but it's usually pretty noisy in there (though I haven't been at night?).

As long as there is a sign, a poster, someone wearing a NaNo shirt.. anything.. I should be able to find you guys.
I'm so excited!!

I like this idea of UTK write-ins, and I'm all for it. I'm at UT, too, but like some of the others out there, I'm a commuter.

I'm not sure I could make the Sunday Panera one simply because of parking on the Strip. LOL. I know Lap was saying that it would be good due to parking, but I figured it'd be easier to get parking at Hodges on Sundays. I know I can always find parking at or near the library on Sunday afternoons; I've never had a problem with it.

Anyway, I'll attempt to make some of the Thursday (is that the right day, I'll recheck in a minute) night meetings and see how that goes! It should be fun!

Thursdays work for me! Less likely to make the Sunday ones, but ya never know. Thanks for setting it up!

(As for parking for Panera, the Lake Avenue parking garage is right behind the strip and not a long walk at all, and not likely to be full at all on Sundays)

Does anyone know what the closest commuter lot to Hodges library would be? I usually end up parking at one of the ones on Lake Loudon, but I hear the mystical C20 (nursing building) is a golden spot.. unfortunately also always full. C9 would also be good, everyone should be leaving school at 5 so it may be a good place for commuter NaNo'ers to park!

I'm meeting with a librarian tomorrow about sectioning off part of the commons for writing during the week. She is very interested in making it work, as are some members of the creative writing department, etc etc. We'll see what we can get going. I'm excited!

Hey all, I'm not a student but I live in the Fort and may join you for the Sunday Panera write-ins, if those are still happening. I just found out my work schedule is changing, effective next week, and I won't be able to make the planned write-ins on Tuesday night (curses!), so I'm looking for other alternatives. :-)

There need to be flyers about the write-ins, I think. :) That'll remind me when I see them.

Great! I'm glad to see you guys can make it to the Sunday and Thursday meetings.

Also, to answer some questions, yes staff parking is no longer reserved after 5 PM but still, good luck getting a spot. As for parking at Panera's, the Lake Terrace parking lot is pretty close by.

Which reminds me, no write in this November 1st. I'll be seeing a play and I'm sure everybody's going to be too busy thinking about their novel to actually write anything. So our first UTK write in will be on Thursday at 5 and we'll probably meet outside the Starbucks (I guess I need to make a sign ...). We'll decide where to go from then on and I'll post on this forum where we are. :3

I know there is technically no write in today, but I'm going to be at Panera anyway. I should be there by 2:00 (remember to set your clock backwards for Daylight Savings Time!) and I'll stay for a few hours.

I'm 5'2, have really curly and short brown hair, and I'll be wearing a "The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS)" T-shirt, and possibly a black Hoodie that has the Horde symbol for WoW on it depending on how chilly Panera is.

I know everyone is really busy today, but I absolutely LOVE helping people brain storm, so if you'd like to take a break and bounce ideas off me or just come and self-medicate on a pastry or two, I'll see you there!
