Most of us listen to music when we write, or watch a particular TV show.

What's your muse's soundtrack this fall? Does it vary based on what you're writing? Do you have stuff you fall back on?

Normally I listen to whatever happens to be playing on my iPod, but do have a couple song lists that have upbeat type music.

Also depends on the type of mood I'm in and what the muse has me writing; if it's angst then it's sad music.

I find it pretty difficult to get anything done while music is playing if it isn't in a minor key, or has some kind of contemplative tone. The subject of the lyrics definitely takes a back seat to the sound, as I generally tune out vocals readily if I'm working on something. Downtempo/ambient is often a good bet! I'm also a rather big fan of good drone, though relatively new to the scene.

As a little bit of a side note, Imogen Heap's track Canvas is one of the most gorgeous and thought-stirring ones I've heard in a while: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXj0dF7LAyE

Music plays a pretty big part in my writing and so far I do have a soundtrack of songs that have been inspiration or just have a fitting sound/feel that I get from the story. But I did just get a leaked version of the new Tegan and Sara CD which I know will probably all I listen to on a regular basis for the next few months <3

With this particular piece, even in the planning stage I'm finding it hard to get anything done while listening to anything with lyrics; I'm too tempted to sing along. So far it's been the score to The Lion King, Blood Diamond, The Dark Knight and instrumental versions of Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth III that have been helping me out most.

I like listening to any of the Harry Potter soundtracks, 3 Doors Down, Skillet and Hawk Nelson. Usually, though, I just put my iPod on shuffle.

It really all depends. I'm compiling multiple play lists for my hockey story, yet I have a feeling that to get anything done this NaNoWriMo I may continue my zombie story on the side. So I'll have playlists galore!

And usually they are catagorized by emotion and story-type. Plus my musical taste knows no bounds! (Except for scream-o and most country) :)

Most often, I just hit "shuffle all" on my Mp3 player and go to. The music is mostly to block out the outside world while I'm writing, and gets tuned out in its own way.

However, when I'm wandering the world, going to or from work for example, the music I'm listening to affects my thought process. I have, more often than not, gained inspirtation from music. I tend to listen to a lot of high-energy metal-ish stuff if I need to write a lot of action. More esoteric weird and mystical sounding music inspires my fantasy glands. I'm not sure what music will provide the fuel for my never-before-attempted sci-fi efforts this time around.

Where access to the Web is free and consistent, this is the increasingly random playlist of stuff for background noise this fall:
http://www.playlist.com/playlist/18179304715/standalone
(It is called Not Safe for Work for a reason. If you get in trouble for listening to "Closer" by NIN, "Freak on a Leash" by Korn, and "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang at the office, don't blame me! It fluctuates wildly from heavy metal and silly pop songs right through to classical and country. )

Where it is not, probably the iPod. I still need a Bluetoth headset thingy though. :( I like my hearmuffs.

I seldom will write creatively without some kind of music. I need something to keep my monkey-brain occupied so I can storytell.

This year I'm writing sci-fi "film noir", so in the next few days I'll be poking around the Internet and into my husband's iTunes folders in search of 1940's music to fuel my muse. "Town Without Pity" is definitely on the playlist...

Paramore.

DEFINITELY Paramore. I have their three CDs on repeat and will probably be singing songs like "Brick by Boring Brick" and "Misguided Ghosts" in my sleep by the end of November. >.<

*is adding songs to her iPod when she ought to be housekeeping* *chuckle*

Adding some of the things in NSFW to my actual unconnected playlist. Bumping thread.

Because most of the WriMos I've had the priviledge to meet run off caffiene, sugar and music... there must be more of you out there with favorite writing background noise than this... *pokes bushes to see what flies out*
