Do you guys have a writing playlist? You know, the kind that helps you write or gives you the feeling that you're really in the story? Last year I did Death Metal playlist and the year before that was just Heavy Metal.

It brought some interesting scenes to mind. Does anyone know if we can purchase game soundtracks locally?

I was thinking more on the line of classical music from orchestra's and all. The kind of music you can hear on Symphony 92.4 at night, they call it "A little night music" or something. Alternatively, listening to Jazz and Hayley Westenra always works for me as well.

I tend to prefer instrumental music so it's not as distracting. Not exactly "classical" instrumental, but something like instrumental rock or movie soundtracks work really well.

Classical or instrumental is good though i prefer the former. Jpop is good too, although not too rock, in a sense. Essentially, anything without lyrics or with lyrics I can't understand.

Most people think I'm crazy when they listen to my playlist... It's got lots of random songs in it. For example... The Ben10 theme song, Teen Titans theme song, Avril Lavigne, Elton John, Disney, We the Kings and Andrew Lloyed Webber. But mostly it's Elton John or Disney. Way I see it, you have four options:
1. Noise-cancellation earphones. (expensive)
2. Intense focus (takes time to develop)
3. Use music you're familiar with to sink out of the world.

No way. The library is INFESTED with wriggly, snot-filled, hyperactive BRATS. And then you gotta deal with the kids!
I suggest levels 5-7 of the National Library -- just find a nice bright corner next to a window, set up your laptop, and you're good to go.
That being said, I've got an epic track for The Chase Scene. Now all I need to figure out is what EXACTLY The Chase Scene IS.

I've tried all sorts of music, and the kind that gets me all revved up to write are usually angry songs like stuff from Matchbox Twenty or Alanis Morissette. Coldplay and live Bruce Springsteen concerts too, something that makes you emo/jumpy all at once. :)

I won't call mine just a writing playlist, but more of a work playlist (something to listen to for any kind of work).
Instrumentals like orchestra, jazz, bossa nova and the likes.
Because I myself plays the violin + saxophone, hence the preference for these genres. :3
Though my best playlist is actually just a loop of fin. by capsule which basically is an uplifting piano solo that lasts exactly 1 minute.

I wish I could listen to music when I write. I used to be able to but now it just brings back those characters or that time or whatever. I reckon I need some new music I've never heard before for this book. Maybe songs that aren't in English so I don't get caught up in the words. Sometimes I listen to Mandarin radio when I drive because I haven't a clue what they're saying, mostly, and apart from the few words like 'wo ai ni' and 'crying' and stuff, I'm blissfully oblivious to what's going on in the song lyrics. Suggestions welcome!

If it's one in foreign lyrics, try Shugo Tokumaru. He's a Japanese folk singer, and given your preference for Mandarin radio, I'm certain you'll find Tokumaru good too. If you're feeling a bit more adventurous than pop tunes and simple rhythms, give Sa Dingding a try. She combines Buddhist flavour with acid jazz, which is a wild and fun listen.
But how about songs without lyrics? Ones of DJ Shadow. He isn't the DJ you think that would be on clubs or anything, in fact, he makes ambient hip-hop pieces which are carved straight out of Western history. Or the Field, minimal techno to the point where his standout point is simply redundancy. Check out post-rock music too, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai. These two bands, they're pretty much making classical pieces using modern instruments.
